Groznjan – Grisignana: “Today this town of artists is a charming place with beautiful views”

Hundred meters from the parking place you will be on a beautiful plateau with several centuries old trees. In front of you, there is the Parish Church of St. Vitus and Modesto that was built in 1770 on the site of an older church from the 14th century.

The church houses a number of valuable works of art, among them there are interesting choir benches from 1711, which with their motifs recall the woodcuttings of Istrian folk casket.

On your left side there is the Podesta’s Palace with a coat of arms on the façade. Podesta’s Palace was modernized twice: in 1588 and in 1726.

Opposite the church there is a pretty view of the western part of Istria with the sea in the background.

After you have enjoyed the beauty of the view take the road that goes between the church and the Podesta’s Palace towards the lower part of the town. You will see that most of the buildings are nice and well preserved.

At the bottom of the road you will arrive to a lovely square. This was the main square of the town. On your left side there is a very nice Renaissance loggia from 1577. Near to the loggia there are well preserved main town gates dating back to the 15th and 16th century.

During the Venice Republic above the Renaissance loggia there was a “fondaco”, a house for the grain storage. Every town under the Venetian rule had the grain house and the Municipal loggia built mainly for the administration purposes of the town.

When you pass outside the main town gates you will see some beautiful several centuries old hackberry trees and also the small Church of St. Cosmas and Damian from 1554. The renowned Croatian painter Ivan Lovrencic has recently painted its interior.

If you turn back towards the town and continue to walk on the main street, you will arrive to a small and pretty square that during the summer is in the shadow of the centuries old hackberry trees.

From this small square you have another incredible view, this time, towards the southern part of Istria

In Groznjan’s photo gallery you will find most of the pictures of some very nice buildings and places that have been described above.
