Smrikva Bowl Library story and the spring... JRL once said... "books are the bees which carry the quickening pollen from one to another mind..." ;)
The 19th Smrikva Bowl 2014 generation will be known in less than a week time… and… while few days ago I recalled the story of circle of life that is linked to our little Ambassadors and the old olive trees we plant…
... today I would be pleased to recall another story that is linked to the books and the title of today… linked to the books but also to our players who bring them to their Smrikva Bowl… :)
...it is the story of heritage… but as written in the title… it is again a story related to the spring via pollen … but this time is a kind of mind pollen… ;)…
James Russell Lowell compared books to the bees and I like it… “books are the bees which carry the quickening pollen from one to another mind…”

In 2009 we started the building of the Smrikva Bowl Library… and since than each Smrikva Bowl player is requested to bring with him a cultural book that will remember his stay in Smrikve and will represent part of his culture of origin to be shared with other Smrikve friends…
Nowadays Smrikva Bowl Library consists of over 480 books from 52 countries… :)
…Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors are today spread in 62 countries and all the continents… and historically their task was to help us in our search of talented kids in their countries of origin and invite them to play the Smrikva Bowl but from 26th of March 2009… since Istria from Smrikve was put on line… they are also ISTRIA Cultural Ambassadors’ seeds.
The old olive tree Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors plant every year is a symbol of friendship and intergenerational responsibility and Smrikva Bowl’s idea of children, sport, music and culture that are able to pass all frontiers are incorporated in the creation of the Smrikva Bowl Library too…
I used to write in my first book on European Union and Cosmopolitan Democracy that we are those who represent the current civilization…
I find it as an important concept. Today people live an average of about 80 years. What we call civilization is mostly made up of the human knowledge we have accumulated till today, which our institutions in part are able to pass onto future generations… sometimes this is not easy at all…
The books represent the greatest human memory that can help us understand what we see combined with cummulated personal experience of our daily lives. But given the fragility of the circle of life it is very easy for people to ignore these facts and lose sight of our human knowledge. It takes just a few generations to lose that great heritage…
We have gotten used to rapid technological progress, but social and civil progress is slower… more complex. Humans learn throughout the whole lifetime, from books… schools, but mostly from personal experiences…
Smrikva Bowl mission is to develop and spread cosmopolitan values. Love, friendship and empathy are cosmopolitan values per excellence for people and humanity…
Thanks in advance to all the 19th Smrikva Bowl players who will help this year with their visit to Smrikve to build another piece of the Smrikva Bowl World library :)

Spring is at the door... nature awakens... and soon the 19th Smrikva Bowl 2014 tennis talents generation will be known... :)
In 2005, for the 10th Smrikva Bowl anniversary, we started a tradition of planting an Olive tree…

... in many countries the olive tree is a symbol of peace… while the age of the Smrikva Bowl olive tree is a symbol of intergenerational responsibility…
... every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to try to understand and to learn to preserve all that each of us is born with…

... the spring moment when nature wakes up… is also the moment when the new Smrikva Bowl generation will be identified… and to me it is a nice moment to recall the story of the circle of life… :)
Smrikve, March 2008
AMBASSADORS’ OLD OLIVE TREE AND THE CIRCLE OF LIFE…
The Lion King cartoon is an artwork and most of the life messages one can find in it are in line with the Smrikva Bowl. They are in line with the message of the Ambassadors’ Olive Tree; they are in line with the values of friendship and love; they are in line with empathy. Love, friendship and empathy are all Cosmopolitan values per excellence, as far as people and humanity are concerned.
The relationship between Mufasa, Sarabi and Simba reminds me of both: parents and family love, but also about the intergenerational responsibility.
Timon, Pumbaa and Simba relationship reminds me about love between friends. Pumbaa also make me think about empathy, intuition and loyalty. The relationship between Simba and Nola reminds me again about the importance of love. Rafiki, the wise old baboo, with his many centuries old tree reminds me about the importance of knowledge and experience of the older.

There are many other particular moments that every person on its own, based on his or her own life experience, discover by watching these artworks.
You might be interested to know that most of the characters’s names in this cartoon have a particular meaning in Swahili language: Simba means “lion”; Nala means “gift”, and love is for me one of the greatest gifts that people can receive and give during their life; Sarabi means “mirage”; Pumbaa means “dull-witted” or “stunned”; and Rafiki means “friend” :). These names with their meanings make me think of the American Indians and the way they used to give the names to their people.
Every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to understand and to learn, to preserve all that each of us is born with.

When Mufasa was explaining to Simba that is not easy to be the King… a good King should know that everything around us lives in a delicate equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it.
The intergenerational responsibility alone will allow future generations to enjoy the beauty of life, the sunsets and the seasons of the earth. Enjoy the circle of life.
“The future is always in a minority. Yet the history of the future is more important than the history of the past. It is for the old to remember the past. It is for the young to build the world of tomorrow…”

Everything around us lives in a delicate equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it. It is true that every generation face new challenges but there are many examples in the past how the old generations managed and solved particular problems and this is why knowledge, human curiosity and will to learn are important.

Ana Ivanovic, Golden Honorary Smrikva Bowl Member, donated again to the 19th Smrikva Bowl 2014 edition her signed dress and her UNICEF signed t-shirt :)...it is her seventh year in the row donation
I’ve just received the gifts for this year Smrikva Bowl kids from our Golden Honorary Smrikva Bowl Member and Tennis Star Ana Ivanovic :)
Ana Ivanovic is among the best tennis players in the World and I am very pleased that Ana honored us for the seventh year in the row with few items donation also to this year Smrikva Bowl edition.
Over the years Ana donated signed t-shirts, dresses, caps and several of her tennis shoes and for the 19th Smrikva Bowl 2014 edition she decided for the following combination :)…
her dress… and UNICEF t-shirt…
Ana Ivanovic gave few years ago an interview to Montenegro Family and I am pleased to post her words again because they are of interest for the Smrikva community, our Smrikva Bowl talents and the new talents we expect this summer in Smrikve…
When you were five your wish was to play tennis. Today, you are the main reason why many five-years-old kids want to play tennis. For the children you meet, often you’re seen as an idol. How do you feel while meeting them?
It’s one of the biggest honors, I can tell you that. It’s not something I ever thought about when I was trying to become a professional: you dream about winning tournaments and competing in big stadiums, but this is a whole different side to being a professional. I can see that many children look up to athletes and I take my responsibility very seriously. It’s a great honor for me to maybe inspire some kids to play tennis, and I love spending time with children.
Is it true that the dreams come true if you believe in them, considering the fact that you dreamed of winning a Grand Slam…. and the dream came true. Or is more needed for the fulfillment of a dream?
Believing in your goals is definitely the most important thing….
If you don’t believe you will achieve them, you have no chance really. It’s also important to have a good support team around you, starting with your family. I have been lucky in that respect: my parents never pushed me into anything, they always understood me and supported me in the best way possible. My management has also done a great job for me. They help me to focus only on tennis.
What advice would you give to the parents whose children want to practise a sport?
The most important thing is that parents are supporting their children, and that children are playing tennis because they want to play it – not because their parents want them to play. If this is the case then I would encourage parents to support their children, never to push them, and to make sure that the child’s happiness is the overall priority.
In 2008 Ana Ivanovic started to donate signed t-shirts to the Smrikva Bowl finalists. Since than she won Roland Garros and reached also the ranking #1 in the World…
Katarina Jokic, Maia Lumsden, Katie Swan, Paula Arias Manon, Jovana Vukovic – JOKA, Olga Danilovic, Ksenija Tmusic, Himari Sato, Luisa Meyer Auf Der Heide, Noa Krznaric and Kyle Bilchev received Ana’s gift and I hope that her gift will inspire them to keep doing their best in tennis…
On September 17th, 2007 Ana Ivanovic has been officially named the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Ambassador. On that day, in relation with the nomination, Ana said “This is a great honor for me to be invited to be UNICEF Ambassador. I love children, and I relish this opportunity to help them in some small way.”
With her gifts Ana showed that she loves children and this way she also helps Smirkva Bowl development “in some small way”.
“Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of peace.” said Nelson Mandela.
Never Stop Smiling Ana! :)

On March 3rd... the 2nd WORLD TENNIS DAY will be celebrated... ISTRIAN traditional international events: Istarska Rivijera... ATP Umag... Smrikva Bowl...
Tomorrow is celebrated the 2nd World Tennis Day... and I am pleased to share with Smrikve community an article published on Discover Istria from Smrikve…

World Tennis Day was launched by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and StarGames on March 4th, 2013… the goal of the initiative is to promote and celebrate tennis around the globe.
In 2010, ITF’s members approved the New Rule for the under 10 age group, also known as ITF’s Tennis10s program or Play & Stay program…
Since 2012, the New Rule is mandatory … and it is only the fifth rule change in the tennis’ history…
The change consisted in adapting the courts and the net to the children (making them smaller) and adapting the balls and rackets (making the balls slower and lower bouncing, and the rackets more appropriate with age)...
Some of you may have noted funny colored balls on the courts with kids: the red-yellow, the orange – yellow and the green – yellow…
The basic idea behind is to allow little kids to learn more easy… and after trying to remain on the courts… PLAY & STAY ;)....

The inaugural World Tennis Day was centered around two events in New York and Hong Kong featuring professionals competing, along with demonstrations of the ITF’s Tennis10s program.
The ITF also encouraged its 210 National Associations to support the day with their own club activities… and this year is expected to take place in around 70 countries…
In 2014, with the continuation of the special events in New York and Hong Kong, WTD is expanding to London…
I would like to take the opportunity of this Tennis Celebration Day… to recall for our Group just few traditional tennis events held in Istria… and would start with the oldest international tennis event in Croatia:
ISTARSKA RIVIJERA... (Istrian Rivijera)... arrived to its 42nd edition…
...consists of several ITF Futures tournaments played in different locations on the coast…
Istarska Rivijera attracted a number of tennis players at the start of their professional careers such as: Boris Becker, Thomas Muster, Goran Ivanisevic, Richard Krajicek, Petr Korda, Ivan Ljubicic...
This year will be played in Vrsar (starting 8th of March), Porec, Umag, Rovinj and Pula (ending 13th fo April)... more than a month of high quality spring tennis in Istria…
ATP UMAG... 25th edition… (July)
ATP Vegeta Croatia Open is the most famous tennis tournament in Istria… part of the ATP Tour 250 series (Euro 450.000)... the first edition was held in 1990 as the Yugoslavia Open… Goran Prpic defeated 18 years old Goran Ivanisevic in the finals… and four times Wimbledon winner, Fred Perry, attended the event just few days before his birthday (at the time ATP Umag was played in May)...
Carlos Moya won in UMAG five and Thomas Muster three times. They both became honorary citizens… and just to give you an idea of the organization quality I have to recall that the tournament received five ATP Awards of excellence: 1998, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005 and in 2011 obtained the Best Fan Experience ATP Award.
The last but not least… SMRIKVA BOWL... 19th edition… (end of June)

... one of the most prestigious under 10 tennis tournaments in the World… gathered around 1350 talents from 62 countries and all the continents…
In 2013, out of eight possible first places at junior Grand Slam tournaments former Smrikva Bowl players collected six of them: Anna Konjuh – Australian Open and US Open; Belinda Bencic – Roland Garros and Wimbledon; Gianluigi Quinzi – Wimbledon and Borna Coric – US Open…
For the end I am pleased to share how Play&Stay for kids looks like… the special guests in the video are President Barack Obama, along with tennis legends Chris Evert, on 10 and Under Tennis court hitting with the kids… enjoy… :)

This week Dominic THIEM, 8th Smrikva Bowl 2003 winner, become the first Smrikva Bowl player to reach TOP 100 ATP ranking
Smrikva Bowl was founded in 1996… and over the years has grown into a World tennis talents gathering… 1350 tennis talents from all the continents and 62 countries played Smrikva Bowl…
It was 2003 when Dominic THIEM played his Smrikva Bowl… in the finals he defeated George Morgan from UK… you can see Domi at age of 10 in the PHOTO GALLERY of THE 8TH SMRIKVA BOWL 2003 …
… and yesterday, 10 years after his Smrikva Bowl, he become the first Smrikva Bowl player to reach TOP 100 ATP ranking…
He won many matches on his road… few years ago he was able to win Thomas Muster… last year he was able to win his idol Jurgen Melzer… and at the end of the last year he played a very tight match with Jo Wilfried Tsonga… last week he was able to play with another tennis star Andy Murray…
Top quality of the players on ATP and WTA tour doubled compared only to just a few decades ago… and the mountain to climb is every year higher and higher…
Dominic started playing tennis aged six… and his both parents are tennis coaches… his younger brother, Moritz, also played Smrikva Bowl… both Domi and Moritz were in Smrikve with their grandparents… and I still conserve the gift received from family Thiem and Mullner during their stay… it is in the library and we may open it when they return to Smrikve :)…
Domi’s talent is currently developed by his coach Gunter Bresnik… who dedicated his time in the past to the players such as: Boris Becker, Amos Mansdorf, Patrick McEnroe, Henri Leconte, Stefan Koubek, Patrick Baur, Vladimir Voltchkov… for many years Mr. Bresnik was Austrian Davis Cup Captain and for few years was also Sports Director of the Austrian Tennis Federation…
It is the historical achievement in the Smrikva Bowl story… almost 18 years after the tournament foundation Dominic THIEM become the first Smrikva Bowl player to reach TOP 100 ATP ranking…
Bravo
