Some pictures of the 19th Smrikva Bowl 2014 actors and stage assistants :)... taken during the second day of their Smrikva Bowl...
I like to repeat that when I think of Smrikva Bowl I try to imagine it as a theatre... ...year after year we work hard to set a stage where the world’s talents can gather…
All these different actors, great talents, very special kids, arriving from different cultures, have different dreams,...
... and today the reporting story starts with the picture of Tea looking at the Draws… and trying to get the feeling when she could be expected to show her skills on the court ;)...

We set the stage and later on they are in charge with their will, dreams and hard work… they are the ones who write the most different stories…
On the following picture both Aliona and Blacky closed their eyes… and seems they both are dreaming :)...

Main actors (players’) little brothers and sister find the way to have good time too :)...

... and also the main actors get surprised from time to time on their own ;)...

... a lot of nice matches to follow…and Guney under the shadow is following one of the matches on court #1…

... another talents under development… this time seems drawing :)

Daniela, Lea with friends… relaxing before the match…

Marko on his first Staff experience…

and here is Sampras taking notes on the paper…

... while kids know how to write on a leaf :)... o yes…

Neriya smile… :)

...Nera dreaming…

... and Nera’s son Blacky enjoy another new friend… :) walking side by side…

... one of the Central Park family islands you can spot during Smrikva Bowl in the garden…

and here we are ready for another day…

... Smrikva was always the informal moment to exchange ideas… and tomorrow night we will make a FORUM with a larger group of parents and coaches interested in sharing experiences…
and the new Smrikva day is starting… the AMBASSADOR’s NOMINATION DAY… :) ... the ceremony is scheduled for 6:00 PM… and today also some boys from the Main Draw will be hosted at the Smrikve theater while the Consolation Draw will taste the Surida courts…

After introducing each player few short stories were shared with the “seeds of the Legends” :)...

Luis and his friend listen carefully ;)...

... always something funny there :))...

Marlena and friends listening too and welcoming new friends into Smrikva Bowl theatre – central court…

... tomorrow Jaquelyn will be nominated the first Smrikva Bowl Ambassador in Nigeria…

... this picture was taken during the Wilson story ;)...

... and here with Marlena helped to share with Smrikva Bowl generation the Grandmother Willow story ;)...
Grandmother Willow: Now then, there’s something I want to show you. Look.
[dips her vine in the water in which glowing ripples begin to form]
Pocahontas: The ripples.
John Smith: What about them?
Grandmother Willow: So small at first, then look how they grow. But someone has to start them.

Toru Matsushima and his Japanese team: Rio Osoegawa, Kyoka Kubo and Sora Matsuda are the first 19th Smrikva Bowl 2014 players to reach Smrikve :)
Toru Matsushima has been for years sending the best Japanese kids to compete in the Smrikva Bowl… and few years ago Himari Sato was able to conquer the title…
... and this year his Japanese team is composed of: Rio Osoegawa, Kyoka Kubo and Sora Matsuda… and they are the first 19th Smrikva Bowl players to reach Smrikve :)

A very good boy under 12 came with the group as hitting partner… and after arrival they made their first training… and had opportunity to spend some time on the court…

... at the time they were playing it was 2 AM in Japan but it is good to get used to the new time zone ;)...
... and on the picture below you can see Rio performing one of her serves…

... after tennis and pizza… we made a little flies catching competition using western grip on some small and special rackets… developing relaxed wrist technique to try to be faster than flies :))...

Luka Vidovic, 18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 player, with his family and friends from Germany visited Smrikve...
Luka Vidovic played Smrikva Bowl last year… and with his father Zoran, his family and tennis friends from Germany they visited Smrikve for a week training…

It was a week of swimming, tennis and barbeque…

Luka’s friends are: Morris Boger, Laurin Boger, Carl Gierl, Lenny Selg and brothers Rimac…

On the following picture you can see Morris serving… while playing a training match with Luka…
Luka lives in Baden-Württemberg… and all his friends are from that Region… and the day before arriving to Smrikve Luka was able to reach the 3rd place at the Baden-Württemberg under 11 Championship… and right after Smrikve visit he went to Padova in Italy to play an ETA under 12…

Not only tennis… but also coordination… stretching… football… and after that swimming pool or the sea :)

... while kids were training also their mothers were taking lessons with Luka’s father friend Zoran Mitrovic… as you see: Carmen, Renata, Daniela and Jeanette decided to spend active vacation in Smrikve ;)...

... and here you see Luka’s parents: Renata and Zoki… they were in charge for the barbeque too… couple of nights we had pleasure to enjoy Renata and Zoki’s performances on the grill :)...

... and yesterday the team was ready to depart in front of their new “home away from home”...

with promise to return soon :)
bye bye…

19th Smrikva Bowl 2014 edition... "Smrikve theatre stage" for the "seeds of the Legends" is entering the phase of final preparations...
I am please to recall parts of an article written at the beginning of 2010… when I compared for the first time Smrikva Bowl to a theater stage…
... When I think of Smrikva Bowl I try to imagine it as a theatre where every year we work hard to set the stage where the world’s talents can gather… Every year we gather all this different actors, great talents, very special kids, arriving from different cultures, having different dreams,...
We set the stage and later on they are in charge with their will, dreams and hard work… they are the ones who write the most different stories…
Smrikva Bowl is still very young tournament but I would like to think that some of these kids will write… inspiring stories in most different professional fields.
I also know that according to the statistics only few of the kids participating Smrikva Bowl will make it to become top professional tennis players, but I like to think that they will make it in other professional fields they choose in their lives.
I read Andre Agassi’s book and throught the whole book he was repeating to friends and people meeting… that he doesn’t like tennis thus it seems to me that he never had the option to choose, but in end he ended up being the Champion and according to Luke Jensen a person with big heart and very good friend.

I will never know how many kids playing Smrikva Bowl are playing it because their parents would like them to become professional tennis players and how much of them play it because they enjoy the game.
What I do know is that any kind of sport can help kids in their growth and I also know that people that do excel in any field require total dedication and a lot of sacrifice to reach the excellence.
When I think of Andre’s words of not loving what he was doing for most of the time of his life I start thinking of other 90% of people around the World that make for living doing jobs they do not like, but “La vita e’ bella” Roberto Benigni would say and tennis helped Andre to grow up.
There is one part in the book that I liked a lot… it is about inspiration, faith and what does it mean to be a good coach... to have the right word in the right moment… this part is related with Gil… and is about people that do believe in other people and help them to write their life stories and to write their own one…
Here are Gil’s words reported by Andre in his book when he accepted to coach him:
“I’m not one of those people who expresses or articulates feelings very well, but from now on, just know this: It’s on, man. It is on.
You know what I’m saying? We’are in a fight, and you can count on me until the last man is standing. Somewhere up there is a star with your name on it. I might not be able to help you find it, but I’ve got pretty strong shoulders, and you can stand on my shoulders while you’re looking for that star. You hear? For as long as you want. Stand on my shoulders and reach, man. Reach.”
In every life there are people that influence what we do and how we do it.
The Smrikva Bowl festival would like to inspire its players and Ambassadors to believe in their dreams and work hard to reach them.

Sport and music are in general good educators and the vision of sport preferred in Smrikve is the one Nelson Mandela once said:
“Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of peace.”

Over the last few weeks there were many former Smrikva Bowl players making outstanding results…
Dominic THIEM played with Rafael Nadal on Roland Garros… and Ajla TOMLJANOVIC is in the third round of Roland Garros…
Nikola MILOJEVIC made his first ATP victory and jump for 100 places on ATP list…
Olga DANILOVIC (2001 age group) in the finals defeated Andja KARANUSIC (another Smrikva girl 2000 age group) at Bergant Memorial in Maribor (under 16 age group)... and I have to recall that Miomir KECMANOVIC (1999 age group and “La Bottega di Smrikve” summer visiting student for years) won his fourth ITF tournament in the row…
There are over thousands of stories written every week by Smrikva seeds in over 60 countries and all the continents… :) and very soon I will have the pleasure to meet over 100 actors of the 19th SMRIKVA BOWL 2014 edition…

„ISTRIA FROM SMRIKVE“ on LINKED IN (HD promo video)
Dear Smrikve and Smrikva Bowl friends,
I am pleased to share and present a promo video just made to present a Linked In Group named Discover Istria from Smrikve...
... if you are not already member, it is my pleasure to invite you to join the Group on Linked In…
Why each person who JOIN the GROUP make a difference?
... hm… hard question… with no exact answer… but let me share a moment from Pocahontas cartoon… when John Smith meet Grandmother Willow… and her wisdom may me to give an idea why is significant… ;)
By simply joining the Group you will help me promote the cultural and heritage guide „Istria from Smrikve“... the idea that Slow Food, Slow Travel and Sustainable Living may have the same beauty of the nature and the sea in attracting new travelers…
... if you write „Discover Istria from Smrikve“ in the Linked In Group section you will find it… you can also press the following link
... one last little news for those who did not have the opportunity to see it yet… in the following picture gallery you may recognize a racket of a legend ;)...
I hope you enjoy the new video and I give my welcome in advance to all who decide to JOIN the GROUP Discover Istria from Smrikve…
Mio

Elvis Grgorinic and Vazmoslav Mirkovic - Paskvalin are the winners of the 8th Smrikva Rekreacija 2014 Tournament
In 2009 we established the Spring and Autumn Smrikve Tennis Club Tournament for the recreational players and this year we returned to its origins when only recreation players were invited to compete…

16 Smrikve Tennis Club Recreational members and guests participated in this 8th Smrikve Rekreacija 2014 Tournament…
The day was both cloudy and sunny… simply ideal for tennis :)
There were a lot of nice and equal matches during the day… and those who reached the finals played four matches in just a day and it is not an easy experience… but a lot of nice tennis combined with good food and funny moments happened during the day…
We started to gather at 8:30 AM… and finished late night at 11:30 PM…
Let me walk you through the day via some pictures… and will start with cloudy morning and with the first couple of players on the court #1… Valter and Livio...

... the following couple on the court #1 were Mladen and Tomo...

...as you can see on the following picture… ;)

...towards lunch time the weather started to change… the colors turned into a nice blue sky during Patrik and Pero match on the court #2…

Dario was again the tournament Master Chef… managing the grill area :)... while Dr. Kreso... Hrelja... Livio... Zeljko...Pero are all in action on the following picture… deserved table action ;)...

.. the sky kept showing beautiful colors above Smrikve… and the matches continue followed by…

I am pleased to present with just few more word the winner of the Main Draw of the 8th Smrikva Rekreacija 2014 edition… Elvis...
The following pictures were taken during the semifinals he played with Dragan...
Elvis is a very particular player… he played basketball before starting to play recreational tennis… and there are several elements he incorporated from basketball game into tennis game..
There are famous examples of pro players who had some other sports influence on their game such as: Roddick’s serv – basketball, Borg’s backhand – hockey… just to mention few…
... and Elvis in turn is a very difficult player to play…
In each stroke he change direction and speed of the ball… thus there is no way you can follow any rhythm during the game…
But let me share few other elements… you can see the stance he use…
... it is a typical stance that basket ball players use when they defend… and if you see the hand in which he holds the racket you would say that he is lefty…
It is partially true because he serve with his left hand…

... but if you look at the following picture you can see that he plays on this picture with his right hand…
... the truth is that he plays two forehands…
If you played basketball you know that basketball players use to play the ball with both hands… and this is what Elvis does…
From time to time when he play on the net… he can jump and transfer his racket from one hand into another… it is also something that basketball players do with the ball…

... and here is again playing forehand…
... an additional element he use in tennis from basketball is explosive first step… or first movement… this is also improtant in tennis… but his strokes are offensive only when he comes to the net… than he use again a basketball stroke that I would call “knock the net” like when you “knock the basket”... and the angles he get at the net are no return balls…
... and on top of the above on each ball he put 100% of his heart…

In the Main Draw semifinals he defeated Hrelja... his traditional sparing partner in the Club…
... and in the finals he had to play with Valter who defeated Marijan in the other semifinals…

In the Consolation Draw… the finalist were: Paskvalin and Pero... almost the same age and were the oldest players of the day… Paskvalin born in 1946 and Pero born in 1947…

Consolation Draw started before the Main Draw on the court #1…
... Paskvalin and Pero…

Because of the very equal game… and long match… the Main Draw finals started on the court #2… and we thought to move it later on to the court #1 but Paskvalin celebrated his victory…

... just couple of minutes before Elvis celebrated his victory…
I have to note that Valter is playing a very nice and classic tennis but it took him the whole set to try to understand what he could do against very unusual Elvis’s game… and in the 3rd set his legs stopped supporting him… and Elvis gained deserved victory of the day and the trophy…

... in Konoba… our tavern… we celebrated the winners with dry ham and cheese :)
here is again Paskvalin... Consolation Draw winner…

and Elvis... Main Draw winner…

... their names are now on the list of Smrikve Rekreacija winners:

9th of May the day of Europe...
In Europe, Europe Day is an annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe. There are two separate Europe Days, taking place on 5th of May and 9th of May, established by the Council of Europe and the European Union (EU) respectively. For the EU, the day is also known as Schuman Day. Europe Day is one of a number of European symbols designed to foster unity among Europeans.
The Council of Europe was founded on 5th of May 1949, and hence it chose that day for its celebrations when it established the holiday in 1964. In 1985, at the 1985 Milan European Council, the European Communities (which later became the European Union) adopted the European symbols of the Council of Europe such as the Flag of Europe.
However, the Community leaders decided to hold their Europe Day in commemoration of the Schuman Declaration of 9th of May 1950. The declaration proposed the pooling of French and West German coal and steel industries, leading to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the first European Community, and hence is considered a founding moment.
EU is still young and with many own problems but I am pleased to repeat words of a Nobal Prize for Peace who was guest speaker to one of Ambrosetti’s Young Leader Group meetings. It is a tradition that every guest dedicate few words to the Group and he wrote down the following
“The future is always in a minority. Yet the history of the future is more important than the history of the past. It is for the old to remember the past. It is for the young to build the world of tomorrow.
Do it! You can build a world without wars. You can build a new humanity.”
Everything around us lives in a delicate equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it. It is true that every generation face new challenges but there are many examples in the past how the old generations managed and solved particular problems and this is way knowledge, human curiosity and will to learn are important…
Still a lot of nice moments to incorporate in the EU history of the future ;)...
