18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 selection process starts today on Ambassadors Day... 21st of September...
With this e-mail the selection process of the talents for the 18th annual Smrikva Bowl 2013 starts. 18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 will be held in Pula-Istria, Croatia, from 24th till 29th of June 2013. Smrikva Bowl, as some of you may know, is the tournament which boasts the top 10 years old players world-wide… not an under 10, but a “s”-uper 10…;)

There is a detailed presentation about 18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 with the application form and other relevant information related with this year edition that is posted on the main page of the Smrikva Bowl website
17th Smrikva Bowl 2012 gathered top players from 33 countries and since the tournament foundation in 1996 over 1250 top players from 57 countries and all the continents have played the event… it was the first time this year that over 40% of participants accepted were ranked #1 in their countries… historically Smrikva gathered around 30% of participants being formally ranked #1.

In 2009 the cultural tourism guide Istria from Smrikve was published and this is my gift to the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors and Smrikve friends with wish that a part of helping us in scouting talents around the World our little Ambassadors will also help us in spreading the word about Istria as cultural tourism destination worth visiting.
The same year, as part of the subscription fee, the Smrikva Bowl participants started to bring a book about the culture of the place they are coming from thus we started to create the Smrikva Bowl Library… this year we physically created the library that also become a classroom for the members of our tennis school “La Bottega” di Smrikve… our tennis school… the donated book till today form a library of over 380 books from 46 countries…
Smrikva Bowl mission is to develop and spread Cosmopolitan values. Children, sport, culture and music are part of the Cosmopolitan World. Last year the Cosmopolite website has been created and it is another gift to the friends of Smrikve and our Ambassadors. Cosmopolite is a website dedicated to a book describing the importance of civilisation for the talents development.

Today is 21st of September… and few years ago this date was selected to be dedicated to the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors… thus became the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors Day … it is a good day to start the research of the talents for the 2013 edition…
Many of you are our Smrikve Ambassadors and I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that the number of the accepted players will be close to our traditional number of 100 players and your help will be as usual very precious…
If you know a good tennis player born in 2003 that deserves to play Smrikva Bowl please let me know. If you would like to help in any way Smrikva Bowl you are welcome, and thank you in advance for spreading the word about Smrikve and Smrikva Bowl in your community.

... and just one more thing for the end… SMRIKVE LOUNGE ... you will hear the story of it in the following months…
Regards,
Miodrag Bozovic

Just attended Annual PTR Tennis Forum Meeting 2012 at Vavassori Tennis Academy - Palazzolo in ITALY
I participated last week end to the Annual PTR Tennis Forum at Vavassori Tennis Academy in Palazzolo, nearby Brescia in Italy… which was, as per tradition, full of interesting speakers…
Let me give you just a brief overview of the above mentioned learning experience…
This year at the Annual PTR Tennis Forum held at Palazzolo there were two new guest speakers to me Lorenzo Beltrame... and Gennaro Volturo...
Lorenzo Beltrame lives in Florida and is director of the Human Performance Institute… in particular is Director of Tennis and Mental Training…
Let me just give you a brief overview of his past experiences and awards… thus you can better understand his topics which were focused on improving mental strength and learning best tactics applied on different situations on the court...
Lorenzo Beltrame has been involved in sport all his life, first as a top ranked junior tennis player, then as a professional player and ultimately as a coach. Throughout his coaching career, he has worked with dozens of ATP and WTA touring professionals including Jim Courier and Pete Sampras. He has traveled extensively coaching players in major professional events…
Lorenzo has served as Director of Tennis and Athletic Mental Training at the Human Performance Institute, formerly LGE Performance Systems, in Orlando, Florida since 1996. Prior to joining the Human Performance Institute, he was responsible for developing and running high performance programs at Club Ambrosiano, one of the most prestigious clubs in Milan, Italy, and at two of the leading academies in the U.S.

It was also nice to see that the assistant you see on the picture above assisting Lorenzo is Elisa Villa that was in the public among tennis teachers and many years ago was Lorenzo’s student and TC Ambrosiano :)...
Lorenzo has learned and applied Dr. Loehr’s mental training system to a variety of sports for nearly a decade… currently is responsible for the Mental Toughness Certification Program…
Lorenzo is also featured as guest instructor on various instructional DVD shows produced by the United States Professional Tennis Association… and is a registered coach of the WTA Tour, holds both the USPTA Master Professional and PTR Professional certifications, and is certified as Maestro by the Italian Tennis Federation… is also an ACE certified personal trainer, and a USTA specialist in competitive player development… and was awarded the Coach of the Year and “Doc” Counsilman Science Award by the United States Olympic Committee.
Those who have interest to learn more about Lorenzo Beltrame can simply google his name and find more on what he does on Human Performance Institute website.

Gennaro Volturo with Luigi Bertino spoke about serve and its biomechanics…
I followed several PTR courses run by Luigi Bertino and one of the most beautiful DVD’s on serve is the one he made together with Riccardo Piatti, Ivan Ljubicic and Danilo Pizzorno… currently he is also the PTR head for the education for ITALY…
Gennaro Volturo is on the other side Professor at the Italian Federation National School for the Tennis Coaches since 2003… and is dedicated to the reasearch of biomecanichs and technique…
The above is the product of new alliance formed in Italy where the PTR is combining intelectual forces with Italian Tennis Federation thus it was really nice and high quality analysis speach… nice learning experience…
The other imortant part of the forum was run by Francesco Foschi, Pepe Rigamonti and Luigi Casale...
It was very enthusiastic and entertaining lesson… dedicated to Cardio Tennis and was run by Francesco Foschi and assisted by Rigamonti and Casale...
I already wrote last year that I met for the first time with this new word Cardio Tennis and I did not have an idea what it was… I enjoyed it… and there is a little additional reason why I enjoyed it that much :)...
I will first insert the picture of how the kids danced with Francesco Foschi at the Forum… and after the picture I will insert part of the article I wrote in July after last year Smrikva Bowl on how Smrikva Bowl kids danced… I hope you will like the story… ;)

Last year winter I read a book named The Talent Code... greatness isn’t born. It’s grown… written by Daniel Coyle...
This book, and a tennis teacher described by Daniel in his book, inspired me to share with Smrikva Bowl kids participating this year Smrikva Bowl a dance with their rackets…

It was the closing of the Ambassadors nomination cerimony when we took the rackets and dancing all together with smile on our faces we spent nice moments together… the kids were extraordinary in their imitation skills that evening :)...

I am pleased to share with Smrikve community and especially with the 16th Smrikva Bowl 2011 players, parents and coaches that were present that day parts of the book that I also talked about on the Smrikva Bowl Forum the day after Ambassadors nomination…

Mr. David Coyle in that book was traveling around the world trying to understand if talents are born or are helped to develop… and also tennis was among the sports he looked at…

In particular David was impressed by results made in Tennis Club Spartak in Moscow… by Larisa Preobrachenskaya... Larisa passed away few years ago but I am pleased to share part of that book with the group because reading that paragraphs and learning about Larisa’s method… that was the inspiration to me to improvise the dance we did that day in Smrikve…

I would be pleased to quote parts of David’s book from the page 80 till the page 83… in my opinnion it is a book worth having in the library for those who like talented kids and for those who are dedicatint their life to develop talents in any field and also in tennis…
That part I am quoting from the book starts with the following:
ABSORB THE WHOLE THING.... This means spending time staring at or listening to the desired skill – the song, the move, the swing – as a singel coherent entity… it basically amounts to absorbing a picture of the skill until you can imagine yourself doing it…

...Some of the most fruitful imitation I saw took place at Spartak Tennis Club in Moscow, a freezing junkpile that has produced a volcano of talent: Anna Kournikova, Marat Safin, Anastasia Myskina, Elena Dementieva, Dinara Safina, Mikhail Youzhny, and Dmitry Tursunov. All in all, the club produced more top-twenty-ranked women than the United States did from 2005 to 2007, as well as half of the men’s team that won the 2006 Davis Cup, and it’s done all that with one indoor court. When I visited in December 2006, the club resembled a Mad Max movie… An abandoned eighteen-wheeler was parked out front. Walking up, I could see shapes moving behind clouded plastic windows, but I did’t hear that distintive thwacking of tennis racquets and balls. When I walked i, the reason become evident: they were swinging all right. But they weren’t using balls.

At Spartak it’s called imitatsiya – rellying in slow motion with an imaginary ball. All Spartak’s players do it, from the five-year-olds to the pros. Their coach, a twinkly, weathered seventy-seven-years-old woman named Larisa Preobrachenskaya, roamed the court like a garage mechanic tunint an oversize engine. She grasped arms and piloted small limbs slowly through the stroke. When they finally hit balls – one by one, in a line (there are no private lessons at Spartak), Preobrazhenskaya frequently stopped them in their tracks and had them go through the motion again slowly, then once more. And again. And perhaps one more time.

It looked like a ballet class: a choreography of slow, simple, precise motions with an emphasis on tekhnika – technique. Preobrachenskaya enforced this approach with an iron decree: none of her students was permitted to play in a tournament for the first three years of their study… “If you begin playing without technique, it is big mistake. Big, big mistake!”
I was inspired by the above imitacija to add the music and try to see how it looks like… and it looked great and I was very pleased to learn that Cardio Tennis already existed with similar idea and concept… :)
During the meeting also Herbert Schnaubelt and Luciano Botti as top Officials of PTR gave indications of new programms that are on their way for the year to come…
PTR is always to me a growing experiences and such an experience was also this year Annual Forum :)
... and just one more thing… having explained the above… I would just say that Dasha from Moscow is again in Smrikve… at La Bottega… and I think the following picture is particular to stamp a nice smile at the end of today’s article… tomorrow the selection of the 18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 edition will start…

Today we collected grapes and started the 18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 - SMRIKVE Malvazija collection wine production
Today we collected grapes and started 2013 Smrikve wine production. It is a long day and several people helped us during the collection process. The grapes were yellow colored and of sweet taste… and as per tradition we will do our best to make good wine…

Smrikve Malvazija is thanks to the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors spread in 57 countries and all the continents. Last year we created a limited collection of 160 bottles and never above 200 bottles… it is always a gift of our family to the Smrikva Bowl families and to our friends.

Wine and gastronomy are part of a culture and wine bottle that we give to every Smrikva Bowl family is part of our cultural gift that every year we are pleased to make to our guests coming from all around the World.
The wine making is the tradition in Smrikve since 1957…
The wine production is a passion for many Istrian families and my grandfather Mate was a great lower of wine and wine making. The first thing he made in 1957 when he settled in Smrikve was planting the vineyard.
Probably not many Smrikva Bowl readers do know the story how my grandfather agreed to take out a row of vineyard to create the space for the court where today the Smrikva Bowl finals are played.
My father, me and my Uncle continue the wine making tradition in Smrikve…
Several years ago I bought a vineyard close to the vineyard planted by my grandfather and today my father and me are doing our best to get the best from what Malvasia grapes can give.
The first phase of the processing the grapes started today…
We collected the grapes but also separated the juice of the rest to obtain the golden color that usually our Istrian Malvazija (Malmsey) wine has. Now for two days the fermentation will be blocked to allow the wine to start its transformation process cleaner than it is today after the collection.
In Smrikve we produce Istrian Malvazija (Malmsey) and during the Smrikva Bowl we use to give a bottle of wine to every family as a memory to their Smrikva Bowl. Probably one day this bottles might be something special if our kids continue to love tennis game and continue to write the Smrikva Bowl story with their results.
Wine as part of the culture…
In the regions where the wine is produced the wine was always part of the culture of the particular site. Also the wine we produce is part of the Smrikve tradition and this is the reason why we are pleased to give a bottle to every family that come to visit us for the Smrikva Bowl.
There is an old Istrian saying: ”Vino od loze i mliko od koze” and “Kruh je za tilo a vino je za dušu”. The translation from Croatian is difficult because you loose the feel of the language. Goat is the symbol of Istria and the meaning of the first saying would be: ”Wine from the grapevine and milk from the goat” and the meaning of the second would be: “Bread is for the body, wine is for the soul”.
With todays collection as I said we started the process of transforming the grapes into wine for the 18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 edition of Malvazija.
The main Istrian wines are: Malvazija, Terran, Refosc and Muscatel.
The glory of the Istrian wine dates back to over 2000 years ago…
For those who are not familiar with Istrian wine I am pleased to remined the reader that Istrian wine was considered one of the best in the Roman Empire, around 20 centuries ago, and was preferred by Livia Drusilla, also known as Iulia Augusta, the wife of the first Roman Emperor Augustus.
Livia Drusilla’s preferred wine was the Istrian wine Pucinum. Livia is considered one of the most influent women in the beginning of the Roman Empire era. It is not know what wine it was because todays wines were brought in Istria mostly by Venitians.
Todays Istrian Malvazija’s story is related with Serenissima… the Venetian Republic
The story of Istrian Malvazija, cultivated in Istria since the end of the 16th century, is fascinating and it relates to the Venetians.
At the beginning of the 15th century the Venetians occupied Peloponnesus in Greece. In the Peloponnesus region there is a town Monemvassia, also named Malvasia. From this town the Venetians started to import the wine into Venice and the other areas controlled by the Venetian Republic.
This wine was so successful and became so famous all over Europe that Venetians decided to plant huge vineyards on the biggest Greek island, Crete.
Between the 16th and 18th century Malvasia become the most important wine in Europe. In 1570 the Turks conquered Crete and Venetians decided to plant Malvasia vineyards in other areas that had friendly relations with Venice which, at that time, also included Istria.
In end Malvasia is in Istria since the above mentioned period while it is not known the sort of the wine that was preferred by the wife of the Emperor Augustus, Livia Drusilla – Julia Augusta.
Giacomo Casanova in his diary talks about another Istrian sort and another great wine…
Giacomo Casanova visited Vrsar several times and in his diary he describes a good wine Refosc and nice women… That Refosc could be Terran too because if you look at the grapes you will hardly note the difference and today Refosc is mostly cultivated in the Slovenian part of Istria while in other areas the dominant sort is Malvasia.
Another excellent wine can be found around Momjan area made of Muscatel sort.

Woow Donna :)!
Interview of the Day- Donna Vekic published on USD 220.000 Tashkent Open 2012 website
Sixteen year old Croatian Donna Vekic is the new star on the horizon, her game defies her age, making it to her first ever WTA semifinal of a Tour event she displayed superlative playing abilities knocking out three top 100 players so far.
Vekic who started the year playing $25K challengers, suddenly find herself in the middle of spotlight extending her career record to 35 wins and 8 losses this year.
Vekic , showed her confidence while talking to Sunder Iyer of the Tashkent Open Media in her first Interview of her career at a WTA event.
Q. About your match today?
“Reaching the semifinals at a WTA tour event has not sunk in yet”, I’m happy that I played very well . I went into the match with a lot of confidence . I went for every ball and happy to have won against a top 100 player for three days in a row now
Q. Coming into the event at Tashkent as qualifier and now a semifinalist?
Actually I’m happy that I got to play the qualifiers , I had the feeling of the courts and every match helped me to get better. My aim is to play every match better than the last one. I don’t care if I lose too, because I learn from the matches I loose. I have worked hard this year and hard work pays off
Q. You have already made 130 points and its going to be big jump in your young career?
I try not to think about all this, and if you think too much one may lose focus, All I want is to play well and do well.
Q. Your journey from Challengers to WTA tour has been like dream, when so many struggle to get here?
Like I said for every different player, things are different, it is a different game . For me It’s going to the court and doing my best, whatever is the tournament. I have great coach and I just follow what he has planned for me.
Q. Yes as a junior will you have tournament restrictions due to your age?
I leave it to my coach, he is a great guy and he will plan out the right schedule for me, the only thing for me is to focus
Q. How has been the journey from the junior level to the professional level?
I stopped playing juniors after I lost in the junior quarterfinals at Wimbledon, I decided that my junior tennis was over and decided to concentrate on the senior circuit. It is totally a different ball game, I felt I adjusted more to the senior level and have been comfortable.
Q . At 16 years, players are enjoying life on and off court but you seemed to be different and determined?
I love tennis, and I don’t think like a 16 year old. In tennis one has to grow fast and I think I have matured fast. I love tennis and want to be playing. I have to physically and mentally get stronger and focus on developing my game. The aim I have set up is probably play at a Grand Slam soon but firstly get into the top 150.

The Little Prince and The Fox... dedicated to 1250 Smrikva Bowl kids spread in 57 countries and all the continents...
A narration of the story of The Fox and The Little Prince who tamed him… is today dedicated to over 1250 Smrikva Bowl kids – Ambassadors – spread in 57 countries and all the continents that played Smrikva Bowl since its foundation in 1996...
On 21st of September 2012 – the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors’ Day – the tennis talents selection process for the 18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 edition will start...
Just few memorable quotes or better say teachings :)...
... “One only understands the things that one tames,” said the fox…
... “What must I do, to tame you?” asked the little prince.
“You must be very patient,” replied the fox. “First you will sit down at a little distance from me – like that – in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings. But you will sit a little closer to me, every day…”
... and when Little Prince come back to say goodbye the fox shared a little secret with him…
... “Goodbye,” said the fox. “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
“What is essential is invisible to the eye,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.
“It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.”
... ”... You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose…”
“I am responsible for my rose,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

The players had a great time with the Bryan Brothers. They gave an hour and 1/2 clinic with the players on court and gave an exhibition with Max Miryni and Christian Harrison… signed autographs and took photos with the players.
Also, Anne Smith (10 time grand slam doubles champion) gave a clinic, a mental toughness talk and free individual consultations.
Congratulations Mille!

Milena and Jovan Jevtovic, living in Milan, where on their road towards home and decided to stop for couple of days and show their yearly progress… both of them made significant progress…
... and I am sure that in couple of years Milena will be ready for her Smrikva Bowl… after leaving Smrikve she went to play the Italian Champiship PIA Cup... and she help her team to qualify for the finals… she won all of her single and double matches without loosing a set against Florence, Catania and Rome… and the finals will be played with Perugia… :)

Yesterday was the last summer day in Smrikve for Miomir Kecmanovic, one of the most talented boys in Europe born in 1999, from Belgrade, he played Smrikva Bowl in 2009 and this weekend he is flying to Barcelona… ;)

... Yulia from Moscow is here for another week.. Ari and later on Andjela joined her on the court for her morning lesson…

... and for the end of this week and the beginning of the next week I am pleased to post Angela’s powerful forehand that I enjoyed watching yesterday morning… :)

Yesterday "I was here"… (United Nations World Humanitarian Day…)... on 21st of September - the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors Day - the 18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 tennis talents selection will start...
Yesterday the UN celebrated the World Humanitarian Day… and Beyonce with her song “I was here” supported the campaign…
...many years ago LENNON, JOHN WINSTON / MCCARTNEY, PAUL JAMES put down the song saying something like…
Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, help.
When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody’s help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured,
Now I find I’ve changed my mind and opened up the doors.
Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won’t you please, please help me.
And now my life has changed in oh so many ways,
My independence seems to vanish in the haze.
But every now and then I feel so insecure,
I know that I just need you like I’ve never done before…
… the story remain the same in the circle of life looking at various civilisations over the mankind evolution timeline… and the traces of the cultural heritage around the World is saying the same…
... my homeland is full of civilisation traces that marked the World history… and Beyonce song rise quite a simple question in my head… how can you conserve the civilisation on Earth?...
… I know that it is a hard task…
… and probably there are many answers, but the answer that I like at the moment is “by example”…
On 21st of September – the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors Day – the 18th Smrikva Bowl 2013 tennis talents selection will start… the seeds of the Legends of tomorrow…

.. TALENTED PLAYERS THAT WE ACCEPT DURING THE YEAR FOR SHORTER PERIODS OF TIME AS GUESTS OF OUR SCHOOL ARE LINKED TO THE SMRIKVA BOWL NETWORK… and the preference of the accepted players always go to the talents we had opportunity to meet during Smrikva Bowl or players recommended by the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors…
Yesterday was the day of several visits… Marko Boltuzic, living today in Opatija, played Smrikva Bowl in 2009… the same year when also Miomir Kecmanovic played it… and yesterday they had the opportunity to spend the afternoon together…
Marko Boltuzic reached Smrikve in the morning… and spend the morning training with Ari, Max and Karlo... while the afternoon was the boys afternoon when Miso joined them too for the singles and a double…

... another surprise we had yesterday was the visit to Smrikve of Alberto Orso from Italy…
Alberto was recommended for this year Smrikva Bowl by Matteo Donati, 10th Smrikva Bowl 2005 winner and this year Junnior Wimbledon doubles finalist… and it was a pleasure to see him with his coach and few older tennis friends in Smrikve just few months after his Smrikva Bowl…

... and here are the afternoon boys: Marko, Max and Miomir... Karlo was missing because his cap was missing too… ;)...

... and here they are again… but all the four together…

... another new Smrikva friend made us a visit in the afternoon… Jaša Cvek from Slovenia… Jaša is a very talented 9 years old boy coming from Idria… the place where several Slovenian talents are grown… and I had the opportunity to meet some of them… Jaša has good chances to continue the talents story of the place…

Every day Smrikva Bowl kids win something somewhere around the World… and I am pleased to recall that yesterday two Smrikva finals where played in Barcelona and Poland…
At the beginning of May both Yshai and Dasha visited Smrikve after winning a cathegory 3 TE under 12 tournament in Cakovec… and yesterday they both won another cathegory 3 TE under 12 tournament… Yshai in Spain and Dasha in Poland :)...
Yshai defeated in the finals another Smrikva Bowl boy from Spain, a year younger, Nicolas Alvarez Varona, and also Dasha, who did not played Smrikva Bowl but spend some time with us in Smrikve, defeated in the finals another talented Smrikva Bowl girs from Poland Ania Hertel...

Miomir Kecmanovic, 14th Smrikva Bowl 2009 quarterfinalist, and Karlo Suevich, 15th Smrikva Bowl 2010 finalist trained together this morning...
Two great Smrikva Bowl talents spent the morning together… Miša nad Šujo… :)
I’ve already posted the note that Miro and Miša are doing their traditional summer training at Smrikve and this morning another talented Smrikva boy, trained by his father, visited and joined Miša on his training…

Miomir Kecmanovic – Miša is among the best European players under 14 and is the best in his age group according to his current ranking… while on the other side Karlo Suevich – Šujo, 15th Smrikva Bowl 2010 finalist and 14th Smrikva Bowl 2009 semifinalist, is today the top under 12 Croatian player and soon I am sure he will reach the top of Europe too…
... a nice talents morning in Smrikve…

Miomir Kecmanovic, 14th Smrikva Bowl 2009 quarterfinalist, is at "La Bottega" again... and last week also Mark Boltuzic made as a visit too...
Miomir Kecmanovic is one of the most prominent European players in his age group and every summer he likes to spend some time with Miro in Smirkve :)...

... he grew up quite a lot from last year and his game continues to improve… always in balance and always ready to hit fast… although only 13 his serve can reach 170 km/h… and the balls goes where he wish… ;)...

... there was another Smrikva Bowl player from the 1999 generation last week for a day visit in Smrikve… he is friend of Max and Karlo thus the morning and afternoon was spent in a nice doubles atmosphere…
Mark Boltuzic always ready to have fun made the day for the boys…

... over the last days I’ve been reading a gift book received from a friend about a wise man living over 2500 years ago… and considering the Smrikva Bowl community reading the updates I am pleased to share a paragraph from the book…
...the wise man I mentioned above noted the following:
“Uphold the faith, love learning, defend the good Way with your life. Enter not a country that is unstable; dwell not in a country that is in turmoil. Shine in a world that follows the Way; hide when the world loses the Way.
In a country where the Way prevails, it is shameful to remain poor and obscure; in a country which has lost the Way, it is shameful to become rich and honoured”

Little ZOE… “Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of peace.” - Nelson Mandela – Madiba… INVICTUS…
… years ago I found the above saying perfectly describing the founding idea of the Smrikva Bowl… and probably during the last week I may have learned more about its origin…
I am pleased to share part of this story with Smrikve community…
… it is the story of the sport… healing… of rugby… it is the the story of Zoe from South Africa… the story of Nelson Mandela… the story of inspiring…

Just a week ago a good friend of mine made me a visit with his family… it is an old friend from the Investment Banking world… currently based in Vienna… and every summer he sail with his both to Dalmatia and it is a custom to meet each other for at least an afternoon …
He drop me a note when he was supposed to sail in Pula’s harbour with his boat and we spent a nice evening and had dinner in Smrikve… his wife and daughters are always lovely chat companion for me…
… at 10:30 pm I was taking them with car towards their boat… and in the car I had the music I’ve selected for this year Smrikva Bowl…
… I prsented them Kitaro – Matsuri… than I put them Circle of Life version performed in swahilii language on Broadway… and I started to describe them a girl named Zoe… from South Africa…

… while listening the music The Lion Sleeps Tonight at this year Smirkva Bowl Zoe’s mother walked close to me and told me with smile on her face that every morning Zoe wake up with Lions… and I thought that every morning I wake up with cocks very early and with my imagination I tried to imagine Zoe waking up with Lions :)… and since I’ve seen Zoe for the first time she remind me a bit of Nala… when Nala was still little playing with Simba in Lion King cartoon ;)…
… and while telling this story to Marco’s kids I told him also that Zoe’s father was an important rugby player in South Africa…
… and Marco asked me if he played during the 1990’s and I said yes… I told him that I’ve heard he was part of the great South African team and I told him that I received a book from Zoe … than he told me something I’ve been missing… and he said… „Mio there was a film made on that team that wrote an important page of the South Africa recent history… the name of the film is INVICTUS… it is an increadible and inspiring film… related to Nelson Mandela and is related to rugby… you should see that movie“…
I was not sure if Zoe’s family story was related with the above film… and the first thing that I did when I came home… I went to the Smrikva Bowl library and took one of the two books Zoe donated to Smrikve… and I saw on the cover black and white faces… and I thought it might be the story Marco told me…

… and on Wikipedia watching the list of the actors I saw Zoe’s father name…
…and I watched the movie…
It is a particular movie… about inspiring… about how hard it is to be the example…
I would like to continue this article with a bit different story that relates in my mind to the above…

… few years ago I decided to create “iUPii” to share my findings summarized in a book on possible maintainance of peace… The findings were related with the word war… but could be used with the word minority… the same as with any kind of discrimination… and it is a gift to Smrikve friends spread around the World.
The first Chapter of the book I wrote thinking on kids playing Smrikva Bowl thus I tried to write it in the manner that almost every person could understand it…

I was born in the country that over the last decades has gone through the experience of war… and I remember that I was asking my self why we have wars today… I thought that every person would agree that war is a painful experience? I was asking my self that question at the beginning of 1990’s… this was 20 years ago… today we are in the 21st century and there are still many wars all around the World.
At the time I was thinking that it was impossible that such an experience will happen in the heart of Europe… I was much younger than today and at the time I did not know much about history and European complexity.
…In end of my thinking I came to a simple conclusion that 1990 were only the years that we count from Jesus’ birthday but actually the oldest man on the Earth at the time was about 100 years old, the same as today.
The oldest living memory we had it was and is about 100 years. Every person is born without knowing anything about the life on the Earth and every time each person starts from the beginning to build his own knowledge. Each person gain its own experience in the circle of life.
The circle of life is made of intergenerational responsibility and I found out that in end it is very easy that a new generation repeat the experiences of the previous generations. The circle of life rule was responsible for the fact that every generation repeated similar errors and this has happened almost all the time through the man kind history.
What can we learn from the past?
Every country and every conflict has its own background problems and every diplomat or person that is involved in trying to help to solve conflicts need a deep understanding of the local situation that brought people into a conflict situation.
From the history you can learn but you will not find the answers to the future problems. Every generation needs to solve them on their own. The history could help you to see how other people solved problems of their times and this knowledge could be of help to each of us.
There are very few people that learn thanks to their intuition and most of the people on the Earth learn through mistakes, own experiences, and long hours spent listening to the parents, friends, relatives, reading books and learning by doing. Nothing comes easy and nothing comes without huge efforts.
Every human artwork is product of immense dedication of talented individuals and the society. Every human success require efforts…
The same is with peace or civil society… it is like a nice garden… and if you are not present every day in the garden it will not be that nice in the long run… some plants will get eliminated… the same is within the civil society or anything created by human…
Smrikva Bowl… is an experience… founded on sport, children, culture and music…
Smrikva Bowl is a small but real experience…
In 1996 I founded Smrikva Bowl that has grown in one of the most important under 10 tennis tournaments in the World. Over the years top players from 57 countries and all continents gathered.
Smrikva Bowl experience made me think that Children and Sport could be considered cosmopolitan pillars, later on I added Music as a pillar. While writing that book on war and peace… and learning more about Monet I decided to add Culture as another important pillar.
… and you have to bear in mind that each of the above pillars can be seen in the opposites. You can view at sport like Nelson
Mandela when he said: ”Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of peace”. .. or as a Balkan Nationalist leader who once said: “Sport is the continuation of war”.
Children as future…
When I wrote that book on war and peace I had in my mind the young players I gather during the Smrikva Bowl, especially in the first chapter. Children are the future and I decided that I would gave them one day my book as a gift thus they can understand more in depth the rationale behind the experience they lived…

There are different ways to look at the sport. There are different ways to look at the music, to the culture and also to the children.
The vision of the sport preferred for the Smrikva Bowl that can be extended to: culture music and children is the one above mentioned by Nelson Mandela – Madiba’s: “Sport (or Children, or Music, or Culture) has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of peace”
I like also this variation: “Culture has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of civilisation”
Shimon Peres, another Nobel Prize for Peace, was a guest speaker to one of Ambrosetti’s Young Leader Group meetings. It is tradition that every guest speaker dedicate few words to the Group and he wrote down the following: “The future is always in a minority. Yet the history of the future is more important than the history of the past. It is for the old to remember the past. It is for the young to build the world of tomorrow.
Do it! You can build a world without wars. You can build a new humanity.”
In 1995… the Rugby players were a minority… and Madiba’s idea was an example of trying to heal the social wounds…
There were many people in the man kind history that traced with their examples inspirational paths for the others… but as I wrote above the nice and big garden can not be mantained by a single person it requires the energy of lot of people for almost infinitive time…
I use to repeat to Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors when we plant the century Old Olive Tree the story that everything around us lives in a delicate equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it. It is true that every generation face new challenges but there are many examples in the past how the old generations managed and solved particular problems and thus the knowledge, the human curiosity, and will to learn are important.
Culture, sport, children and music are some of the pillars for the unity in a diversity… an old Eutopia dream… It is mostly a matter of civilisation…
This Eutopia might become a reality when the mankind unite in common future challenges. There will be several opportunities in the future…
Thank you Zoe… the inspiring girl who wakes up with Lions every morning in her native Africa… for helping me to say the above once again in a bit different manner ;)…
