Matic Podlipnik and Lian Benedejcic won the under 12 Slovenian Indoors National Championship
Matic Podlipnik and Lian Benedejcic, both Smrikva Bowl players, became the Slovenian National Champions in the under 12 age group…
The Championship has just been concluded and I was happy to learn from Matic’s father that he won the National Championship… both in single and in doubles…
Matic is already an old Smrikva friend and he use to come with his tennis friends and on his own to enjoy tennis at Smrikve with me and I with him and his friends ;)…
I was pleased to learn that all the finalist were former Smrikva Bowl players…
In the finals Matic Podlipnik defeated Jan Kupcic, another former Smrikva Bowl player, with result 7:6, 6:2… and in doubles Matic and Jan played together and won the National Championship of doubles…
In the girls’ finals Lian Benedejcic defeated Kristina Novak with result 3:6, 6:3, 6:3…
In doubles Lian Benedejcic played with Anja Gal, another Smrikva Bowl player…
Congratulations to all Smrikva players for this little step!… and I am pleased to re-publish the article I wrote on 29th of October 2009 when I brought Matic to visit the Oldest Linden Tree in Istria… I enjoyed that trip and I am pleased to recall it… just to honour the memory and combine it with this nice moment… :)
MATIC PODLIPNIK VISITED SMRIKVE LAST WEEKEND AND VISITED THE OLDEST ISTRIAN LINDEN TREE
Matic Podlipnik is one of the most talented under 10 tennis players from Maribor (Slovenia). This summer he visited Smrikve with his trainer Tine Pufic from ZTK Maribor.
Last weekend Matic came back to Smrikve with his family and we made a small tour in order to visit some lovely Istrian places and enjoy the Istrian gastronomy.
We visited Krsan, Motovun, Slum and in end Hum where the most famous Istrian brandy festival was held.
In Motovun we had launch in Konoba Mondo that was celebrated in a recent New York Times article as one of the best restaurants in the World and the food was really good.
Later on I made a surprise to Matic and his family and brought them to visit a small village named Slum.
Slum is famous in Istria for the oldest linden tree. Matic’s surname is Podlipnik that means “under the linden tree” thus I made them a surprise and brought them to visit the oldest Istrian linden tree :).
I told to Matic that after our launch in Motovun we will go to visit his surname and he thought that it was a joke. Later on I asked him what he expect and he said probably another old town similar to those we visited and in end the surprise was there… :)
The huge and old linden tree is located nearby the Romanesque Church of St. Mathews from 1870. The current church was built on the site of an older church from 1555. It has been written that the church was built near the big linden tree thus it is likely that this linden tree could be at least five centuries old.
Djordje Balasevic wrote a very nice song about three people that were planting a linden tree and let a young boy to watch the moment when they were planting it. It is a nice song that I am pleased to share with all the Smrikva people that can understand it.
Jednom su sadili lipu (Djordje Balasevic)
Jednom su sadili lipu,
Stari Nestorov, gos’n Ceda i jos jedan.
Bio sam nov u tom stripu,
Komsijin mali kog su pustili da gleda.
Stari Nestorov, potpalivsi korov,
Tad rece mi: “Ti si mlad…
Ti ces dospeti za taj hlad…”
…
Jednom su palili lisce,
Sa one lipe, dim je lebdeo do neba
Na kom su, nema ih vise,
Stari Nestorov, gos’n Ceda i jos jedan…
Ko nije drvo razumeo prvo,
Pa tek onda sadio
Taj nije nista uradio…
I, shvatice, kad-tad, da ne zna sta je hlad.

2012 Best wishes... Sve najljepše... Auguri... :))
Far away… in the sunshine there might be hidden Smrikva Bowl kids and ours highest aspirations… many of us may never reach them, but we can all look up and see their beauty, believe in dreams… and try to follow where they lead… overall enjoying the trip… and never forgetting that for someone we are the sunshine simply the way
we are…
Best wishes!

semplicemente cosi’ come siamo…
Auguri!

Smrikva Bowl players on 50th Junior Orange Bowl 2011: 37 Smrikva Bowl names in the Main Draws out of 512... Claire Liu - the under 12 winner, Ivana Jorovic - semifinals. Quarterfinalsts: Popyrin, Paul, Biskic, Rosca, Konjuh
I was pleased to recognize a lot of former Smrikva Bowl players names on Eddie Herr International, NIKE Junior MASTER, “Little Mo” International, and I am also pleased to recognize Smrikva Bowl players names on this year 50th Junior Orange Bowl 2011 – International Tennis Championship.
Mr. Eddie Herr was a tennis visionary who developed the international junior tournament circuit. In 1947, hoping to provide her daughter Suzanne with an opportunity to compete over the December school holidays, Mr. Herr conceived and organized the first Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships.
The Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship has a rich history of bringing some of the world’s most promising young tennis players to South Florida, including Juan Martin Del Potro (2002 champion in 14U). The roster also has included Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters, Monica Seles, Chris Evert, Jim Courier and Mary Jo Fernandez…
...and I am pleased to recall that last year George Morgan, 8th Smrikva Bowl 2003 runner up, won the under 18 age group, while this year Dominic Thiem, 8th Smrikva Bowl 2003 winner, won the under 18 age group.

Almost every top player played this Championship and many former Smrikva Bowl players did very well on the 50th Junior Orange Bowl 2011 edition… Clair Liu is the under 12 Champion! :)

New Year doubles tournament for the Smrikve Club Members with Cripnja... :)
Yesterday several Smrikve Tennis Club members of all ages gathered to celebrate the end of our tennis Year playing a funny random doubles tournament…

We took the names of the present members and created randomly draws…
It was a funny experience because top competitors were mixed with recreational players… this mix forced each team to elaborate tactics and strategies :)...
In end we all together concluded the day in the tavern before the end of the third set of the finals because of the snow rain…
We gathered around the fireplace and enjoyed two big “Cripnja”’s that have been prepared… :)

It was a nice way to say hello to the 2011…

SMRIKVA BOWL AND LITTLE MO FRIENDSHIP RELATIONSHIP…
There is a long term friendship relationship between Smrikva Bowl and “Little Mo”...

In 2002, the Smrikve Tennis Club joined forces with the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation and created the first-ever international competition between the United States and Europe for boys and girls under 10 and named it the “Little Mo”/ Smrikva Bowl. This event was a unique and traditional meeting of the youngest and most talented players in the World.
Since 2002 Smrikva Bowl and “Little Mo” tournaments have both grown into Global Tournaments and this year “Little Mo” players for the first time had the opportunity to play directly in the Smrikva Bowl Main Draw.

SMRIKVE LOUNGE... four months ago the realisation started... and the story of tennis and culture continues... :)
On 8th of August 2011, four months ago, we started to create a new place in Smrikve that is named SMRIKVE LOUNGE…
On the picture below you can see the SMRIKVE LOUNGE render that is exposed on the Istrian Architects Association Exhibition prepared for the projects designed in 2011…

It is envisaged as a place where the culture and tennis will continue to merge…
Culture (Latin: cultura) is a term that has many different inter-related meanings... and is most commonly used in three basic senses:
1) Excellence of taste in the fine arts and humanities, also known as high culture…
2) An integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for symbolic thought and social learning…
3) The set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization, or group…
In the nineteenth century, it came to refer first to the betterment or refinement of the individual, especially through education… “La Bottega”...
SMRIKVE LOUNGE is envisaged as a place where some of the Smrikva Bowl seeds spread in 53 countries will return :)… to relax, for battery re-charge and to prepare for new challanges…
Since 1996 Smrikva Bowl main court has hosted talents from all the continents… and I beleive that SMRIKVE LOUNGE will be the place hosting many former Smrikva Bowl players and future TOP ATP and WTA players… grown Smrikva Bowl kids :) and off course La Bottega di Smrikve friends… it is a dream…
If you visit the SMRIKVE LOUNGE website I hope the sound of the music and the pictures will give you an idea of the place…
...and on the picture below you can see SMRIKVE LOUNGE picture from yesterday evening :)...

... I will be pleased to take the opportunity to say thanks to all the people that are helping me to realise the SMRIKVE LOUNGE…
Just few days ago I went to Rakalj to order marbles for SMRIKVE LOUNGE… the native town of Mate Balota… it is located on the Estern coast of Istria where many people who are helping me to build the LOUNGE are living…
... thus this story I am pleased to dedicate to Nole and Stipe (Gologorica – Boljun), Mile (Milotski brig), Mladjo (Pican), Kum (Krsan), Sebo (Sumber) and Darko (Labin area)…
It was mid August when they started… hot summer time… hard to work …
… and feeling the effort they were making I recalled Antoine de Saint-Exupery saying… “If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people together to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea”…

Day after day I dedicated time talking them about the lighthouse they were making… the story about inspiring… tennis kids that one day might write inspiring story…
… and just few weeks age one of our “La Bottega” school boys was competing in Bangladesh ITF tournament… winning matches day after day … and in end he won that ITF tournament but I was pleased that first thing in the morning my Lounge artist were asking me how our boy did in Bangladesh… :)…

WHY MATE BALOTA TO SAY THANKS TO NOLE, STIPE, MILE, MLADJO, KUM, SEBO and DARKO?
I remember when I read Max Weber’s book: “Die protestantische Ethik und der ‘Geist’ des Kapitalismus” I thought for a second on Matija Vlacic and I thought on him again while reading Mate Balota’s book “Tijesna Zemlja” (the Narrow Land)...
Matija Vlacic… was a Protestant theologist, philosopher and historian of the 16th century native from Labin… a very influent Lutheran reformer…
... and although living in different centuries… Matija Vlacic had an important inspiring influence on Mate Balota… writer, poet, economist, diplomat… and “fisherman, sailor and manual worker”… the last definition gave him freedom to “breathe with full lungs” ;)
I like many parts of “Tijesna zemlja” and I find them in line with what Istria means today… and many parts of the book are in line with what any civil society surviving in the World is based on… I like his… description of “a pure race”… the story of the importance of the given word… the story of the Venetian civilization,… the story of “Jure Valić, od roda Tičara, u Raklju, u Kavranu i Valturi poznat kao Jure Matesina”,… the story of the importance of Boskarin,… the story of living… There were always people speaking “in the name of the people”, but very few individuals are the voice of the people.
When Mate Balota learned that manuscripts of Matija Vlacic were stored in Frankfurt… he decided to study there… Matthias Flacius Illyricus manuscripts were written in Latin… thus he needed to improve his Latin and than try to understand Matthias Flacius Illyricus… which according to Balota was the greatest Istrian of all times…
… and my Lounge artists growing in the native area of Matija and Mate remind me the above ;)…

Last week end the 13th International Tennis Symposium was held at Centro Pavesi in Milan (Italy)
I spent this week end at Centro Pavesi in Milan participating the 13th International Tennis Symposium... as usual the Symposium gathered many interesting speakers and it was an opportunity to learn something new…

Mr. Alberto Castellani, a part of being a great coach, is a great fun of culture, art and history thus his presentation is usually coloured with deep notes related with culture that I always enjoy…
This time Alberto Castellani focused on flexibility of technical training and mental preparations… basically he exposed a synthesis of winter training in 5 weeks with micro cycles adaptable to various types of players… it was a program he made last year in Africa with some top players…
I enjoyed his part because at “La Bottega” di Smrikve it is mostly what we do with our periodical guests… Just at the beginning of November I was pleased to do a micro cycle with top 12 years old kids from Slovenia and it was a great experience…

Alberto, is among other, also the President of the ATP Global Professional Tennis Coach Association… he coached several top ATP players but is also the founder of Tennis Academy called “Il Perugino: the Art of Tennis” which name at least in part reflect his personality…
Last year the 12th International Symposium was held at the tennis club Bonaiti run by Mr. Franco Bonaiti in Milano 3 and he was the speaker following Alberto… the title of his presentation was: From Tennis School to Academy, educational progression, priority levels and ages of students…

I enjoyed a lot the presentation of Mr. Antonio Quirino Cipolla – Fast learning: accelerated learning methodology. Father and son, coach and player: problems and strengths. The atypical as a winning way…
Antonio Cipolla is a person you enjoy listening… he graduated in law and did several interesting things in his life… related with sport but not only… he was a good tennis player… but also ATP Coach of Claudio Pistolesi… and in end he coached his son Flavio Cipolla and brought him among TOP 100 ATP players…
Among other he is also a good public speaker thus his exposition was really interesting… both by contents and by the way he interacted with kids…

Another very interesting subject was presented by Mr. Gianluca Carbone and Mr. Fabrizio Caldarone: Training Methods: Comparing Spain and Florida.
I was pleased to listen to the analysis they made comparing the US teaching Methods mostly represented in his analysis by Gabe Jaramillo method which I do like… and I had the opportunity to listen live… and on the other side the Spanish school represented via Luis Bruguera experience…
It was really well made… based on scientific basis using on the ground analysis that this job required…

Another contribution to this year Symposium was made by Mr. Renzo Furlan... former #19 ATP player who is currently part-time National coach for the Italian Tennis Federation and is also coaching Simone Bolelli… his subject was focused on Intensity applied to achieve high performance… and he used Schiavone example he used to work with over the last years too…

The last speaker was Mr. Massimo Puci... Massimo Pucci is the trainer of Andrey Golubev since he was 14 years old and last year I had a pleasure to listen to him for the first time where the topic was: “Discovery, progression and evolution of Andrey Golubev”.
I enjoyed his last year exposition… and it was very interesting to follow the way he made deep changes to Andrey from his double hand backhand into one hand backhand and also the ability to make majoer changes to his serve…
This year the subject was: “Practical exercises from amateur to top player…” and it was the outstanding presentation…

I can only say that it was another “good year”... :)

Congratulations Dominic!
For those who would like to see Dominic with the racket in his hand I am pleased to post a practice he had with Roger Federer :)
Congratulations once more to Dominic!!!
... and I am pleased to post the picture of Dominic when he won his Smrikva Bowl in 2003 and he was 10 years old at the time :)

There were two other Smrikva Bowl players I recognized in the Main Draw: Djere Laszlo from Serbia who played 10th Smrikva Bowl 2005 and a year younger Borna Coric from Croatia who played Smrikva Bowl the same year… they both reached the 3rd round of this prestigious tournament.
In the girls Main Draw I recognized Christina Makarova who played “Little Mo”/Smrikva Bowl in 2006 and she reached the semifinals! I have to say that Christina’s result is more than great considering her age.
Best wishes to all of them for the upcoming tournaments that will be played in Florida during December!

Neven Krivokuca, 10th Smrikva Bowl 2005 player, played his first ITF tournament and obtained the victory entering the tournament as Wild Card player (Dhaka - Bangladesh)
I enjoyed watching over the last months from the new Smrikve Lounge terrace the tournament preparation of Neven with Miro…

The Bangladesh International Junior Tennis Tournament 2011 played in Dhaka was their first preparation check… and the first impressions as shown with Neven’s road towards the finals and victory make me think that the path may be the right one as shown in the following:
1st round: Neven Krivokuca – bye
2nd round: Neven Krivokuca – Saleem SHADMAN (BAN) 6:1, 6:0
3rd round: Neven Krivokuca – Manish KUMAR (IND) 6:4, 6:3
Quarterfinals: Neven Krivokuca – Anthony SAVIO (IND) 6:3, 6:2
Semifinals: Neven Krivokuca – Sujiv CHOPRA (IND) 6:1, 6:2
Finals: Neven Krivokuca – Tejas KAPOOR (IND) 6:3, 6:1

Being Neven and Miro now in the far East area of the World… and making their first ITF experiences together… I would like to congragulate them both with Confucius’ words who noted long time ago how “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”... ;)
Bravo Meštri!
