Alexei Popyrin, 12 years old Smrikva Bowl player, trained by Riccardo Piatti...
I’ve just received a notice from Alexei family that he started to train with Riccardo Piatti... one of the top coaches on the ATP Tour…
Alexei Popyrin played Smrikva Bowl twice: in 2008 and 2009… and although being of Russian origin… he was born in Australia and grown around the World…
The first time he played 13th Smrikva Bowl in 2008 when he reached the quarterfinals of the Main Draw when he was 8 years old… and the year after he won the Consolation Draw after meeting in the first the round the winner of the 14th Smrikva Bowl 2009 edition Alvaro Regalado Pedrol from Spain…
Alexei Popyrin in the following video hit with Jim Courier in Dubai where he lived at the time… he was 9 years old in the video :)...
For those who understand Italian I am pleased to share the article published yesterday on SPAZIO TENNIS ...
POPYRIN, L’ALLIVEO AUSSIE DI PIATTI
di Alessandro Nizegorodcew e Enrico Carrossino
“Sembra Malisse”.
Compiuti i 13 anni vorrei provare a confrontarmi con qualche tornei Itf under 18.”

Smrikva Bowl Library story and the spring... JRL once said... "books are the bees which carry the quickening pollen from one to another mind..." ;)
The 17th Smrikva Bowl 2012 generation will be known in a week time… and… while few days ago I recalled the story of circle of life that is linked to our little Ambassadors and the old olive trees we plant…
... today I would be pleased to recall another story that is linked to the books and the title of today… linked to the books but also to our players who bring them to their Smrikva Bowl… :)
...it is the story of heritage… but as written in the title… it is again a story related to the spring via pollen … but this time is a kind of mind pollen… ;)…
James Russell Lowell compared books to the bees and I like it… “books are the bees which carry the quickening pollen from one to another mind…”

In 2009 we started the building of the Smrikva Bowl Library… and since than each Smrikva Bowl player is requested to bring with him a cultural book that will remember his stay in Smrikve and will represent part of his culture of origin to be shared with other Smrikve friends…
Nowadays Smrikva Bowl Library consists of over 270 books from over 40 countries… :)
…Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors are today spread in 53 countries and all the continents… and historically their task was to help us in our search of talented kids in their countries of origin and invite them to play the Smrikva Bowl but from 26th of March 2009… since Istria from Smrikve was put on line… they are also ISTRIA Cultural Ambassadors’ seeds.
The old olive tree Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors plant every year is a symbol of friendship and intergenerational responsibility and Smrikva Bowl’s idea of children, sport, music and culture that are able to pass all frontiers are incorporated in the creation of the Smrikva Bowl Library too…
I used to write in my first book on European Union and Cosmopolitan Democracy that we are those who represent the current civilization…
I find it as an important concept. Today people live an average of about 80 years. What we call civilization is mostly made up of the human knowledge we have accumulated till today, which our institutions in part are able to pass onto future generations… sometimes this is not easy at all…
The books represent the greatest human memory that can help us understand what we see combined with cumulated personal experience of our daily lives. But given the fragility of the circle of life it is very easy for people to ignore these facts and lose sight of our human knowledge. It takes just a few generations to lose that great heritage…
We have gotten used to rapid technological progress, but social and civil progress is slower… more complex. Humans learn throughout the whole lifetime, from books… schools, but mostly from personal experiences…
Smrikva Bowl mission is to develop and spread cosmopolitan values. Love, friendship and empathy are cosmopolitan values per excellence for people and humanity…
Thanks in advance to all the 17th Smrikva Bowl players who will help this year with their visit to Smrikve to build another piece of the Smrikva Bowl World library :)

Spring is at the door... nature awakens... :)
In 2005, for the 10th Smrikva Bowl anniversary, we started a tradition of planting an Olive tree… the Olive tree selected was older than the oldest man living on the earth today…
… in many countries the olive tree is a symbol of peace… while the age of the Smrikva Bowl olive tree is a symbol of intergenerational responsibility…
… every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to try to understand and to learn to preserve all that each of us is born with…
… the spring moment when nature wakes up… is the moment when the new Smrikva Bowl generation will be known… and to me it is a nice moment to recall the story of the circle of life… :)

AMBASSADORS’ OLD OLIVE TREE AND THE CIRCLE OF LIFE…
The Lion King cartoon is an artwork and most of the life messages one can find in it are in line with the Smrikva Bowl. They are in line with the message of the Ambassadors’ Olive Tree; they are in line with the values of friendship and love; they are in line with empathy. Love, friendship and empathy are all Cosmopolitan values per excellence, as far as people and humanity are concerned.
The relationship between Mufasa, Sarabi and Simba reminds me of both: parents and family love, but also about the intergenerational responsability.
Timon, Pumbaa and Simba relationship reminds me about love between friends. Pumbaa also make me think abuout empathy, intuition and loyalty. The relationship between Simba and Nola reminds me again about the importance of love. Rafiki, the wise old baboo, with his many centuries old tree reminds me about the importance of knowledge and experience of the older. There are many other particular moments that every person on its own, based on his or her own life experience, discover by watching these artworks.
You might be interested to know that most of the characters’s names in this cartoon have a particular meaning in Swahili language: Simba means “lion”; Nala means “gift”, and love is for me one of the greatest gifts that people can receive and give during their life; Sarabi means “mirage”; Pumbaa means “dull-witted” or “stunned”; and Rafiki means “friend” :). These names with their meanings make me think of the American Indians and the way they used to give the names to their people.
Every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to understand and to learn, to preserve all that each of us is born with. When Mufasa was explaining to Simba that is not easy to be the King… a good King should know that everything around us lives in a delicated equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it. The intergenerational responsibility alone will allow future generations to enjoy the beauty of life, the sunsets and the seasons of the earth. Enjoy the circle of life.
I am pleased to repeat words of a Nobal Prize for Peace who was guest speaker to one of Ambrosetti’s Young Leader Group meetings. It is a tradition that every guest dedicate few words to the Group and he wrote down the following
“The future is always in a minority. Yet the history of the future is more important than the history of the past. It is for the old to remember the past. It is for the young to build the world of tomorrow.
Do it! You can build a world without wars. You can build a new humanity.”
Everything around us lives in a delicated equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it. It is true that every generation face new challanges but there are many examples in the past how the old generations managed and solved particular problems and this is way knowledge, human curiosity and will to learn are important.

Smrikva... inspiring tennis festival...
INSPIRING… SMRIKVA…
... When I think of Smrikva Bowl I try to imagine it as a theatre where every year we work hard to set the stage where the world’s talents can gather… Every year we gather all this different actors, great talents, very special kids, arriving from different cultures, having different dreams,...
We set the stage and later on they are in charge with their will, dreams and hard work… they are the ones who write the most different stories…
Smrikva Bowl is still very young tournament but I would like to think that some of these kids will write… inspiring stories in most different professional fields.
I also know that according to the statistics only few of the kids participating Smrikva Bowl will make it to become top professional tennis players, but I like to think that they will make it in other professional fields they choose in their lives.
I read Andre Agassi’s book and throught the whole book he was repeating to friends and people meeting… that he doesn’t like tennis thus it seems to me that he never had the option to choose, but in end he ended up being the Champion and according to Luke Jensen a person with big heart and very good friend.
I will never know how many kids playing Smrikva Bowl are playing it because their parents would like them to become professional tennis players and how mutch of them play it because they enjoy the game.
What I do know is that any kind of sport can help kids in their growth and I also know that people that do excel in any field require total dedication and a lot of sacrifice to reach the excellence.
When I think of Andre’s words of not loving what he was doing for most of the time of his life I start thinking of other 90% of people around the World that make for living doing jobs they do not like, but “La vita e’ bella” Roberto Benigni would say and tennis helped Andre to grow up.
There is one part in the book that I liked a lot… it is about inspiration, faith and what does it mean to be a good coach... to have the right word in the right moment… this part is related with Gil… and is about people that do beleive in other people and help them to write their life stories and to write their own one…
Here are Gil’s words reported by Andre in his book when he accepted to caoch him:
“I’m not one of those people who expresses or articulates feelings very well, but from now on, just know this: It’s on, man. It is on.
You know what I’m saying? We’are in a fight, and you can count on me until the last man is standing. Somewhere up there is a star with your name on it. I might not be able to help you find it, but I’ve got pretty strong shoulders, and you can stand on my shoulders while you’re looking for that star. You hear? For as long as you want. Stand on my shoulders and reach, man. Reach.”
In every life there are people that influence what we do and how we do it.
The Smrikva Bowl festival would like to inspire its players and Ambassadors to beleive in their dreams and work hard to reach them.

Sport and music are in general good educators and the vision of sport prefered in Smrikve is the one Nelson Mandela once said:
“Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of peace.”

Hsieh wins Malaysian Open when Martic retires
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia—Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei became the first Asian winner of the Malaysian Open on Sunday when her opponent Petra Martic retired with exhaustion after playing both her semifinal and final matches on the same day.
The unseeded Hsieh beat the fifth-seeded Martic 2-6, 7-5, 4-1.
Earlier Sunday, Martic beat second-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (5) in a semifinal lasting more than three hours. Rain triggered a suspension of play Saturday at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort.
The Croatian had only a few hours to rest before facing Hsieh. Both were playing a WTA final for the first time.
The 21-year-old Martic won the first set and led the second by 4-2 before she began to significantly tire. She lost the set after appearing to have leg cramps.
Hsieh, 26, led 4-1 in the third set before Martic retired after an hour and 45 minutes.
The tournament has been plagued by rain delays and injuries all week. Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland withdrew Friday because of an elbow injury.
Below is a short video registred at US Open 2011 of Petra’s first round match with Bardora Zahlavova.

Particular gift received from Smrikva Bowl friends :)...
I am convinced that many Smrikva Bowl friends without particular description have recognized the gift just received… :)

... it has a signature… and is linked with it…
My hope and wish is that in the following decade a Smrikva kid may deserve his or her signature inscribed on a racket and become the inspiration for generations to come as the one whose signature is placed on this particular Wilson racket ;)...

... and to see you in Smrikve from time to time…

Uros Jovic and Senka Deletic are the winners of the 4th "Turnir Teniskih Nada" played this week in Belgrade (under 10 Tennis Hopes Tournament)...
Four years ago I received an e-mail from Ivan Petkovic – the tennis coach native from Cacak (Serbia) – that over the years brought several talented players to the Smrikva Bowl.
In his e-mail he explained to me that he had the idea of organising a tournament for the best under 10 players in Serbia and would be pleased to offer as a prize for the winers the possibility to enter the Smrikva Bowl main draw.
I supported his idea by offering to his winners this opportunity and this is the fourth year in the row that Teniske Nade Turnir was played and it is the fourth year that the winners of his tournament are welcome to compete in the Smrikva Bowl.
The winner of the girs finals was Senka Deletic who defeated in the finals Mina Andjelkovic, while in the boys finals Uros Jovic defeated Hamad Medjedovic.
GIRLS:
Semifinals:
Senka Deletic – Jovana Cvetkovic 5:2, 5:3
Mina Andjelkovic – Teodora Vujicic 5:4, 5:4
Finals: Senka Deletic – Mina Andjelkovic 5:2, 4:5, 10:8

BOYS:
Semifinals:
Uros Jovic – Ilija Zoroja 5:2, 5:3
Hamad Medjedovic – Milan Macura 5:1, 5:2
Finals: Uros Jovic – Hamad Medjedovic 5:3, 5:3

A special congratulations to Uros Jovic and Senka Deletic with hope that they will enjoy the 17th Smrikva Bowl 2012 edition.

Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction
Today… in many countries around the World the LOVe Day is celebrated… and I thought it is worth to dedicate few words to this particular FORCE :)…
Smrikva Bowl mission has always been dedicated towards spreding the cosmopolitan values… and LOVe, friendship and empathy are among those values per excellence…
… today it is still hard to imagine what kind of beauty the Smrikva Bowl seeds around the World will be able to create…
… they are growing… and as of 13th of February 2012… on various World, European and US ranking lists the following summary gives you an idea of the growing seeds of the tennis of tomorrow.. spread in 53 countries and all the continents…
• 1 player TOP 100 WTA (Petra Martic – 2001 winner)
• 1 player TOP 200 ATP (Javier Marti – 2002 winner)
• 9 boys and 7 girls… in total 16 players are in TOP 100 ITF
• 3 boys and 4 girls are in TOP 10 ETA under 16
• 5 girls are in TOP 10 ETA under 14
• 2 boys are in TOP 10 USTA under 14
• 1 boy and 2 girls are in TOP 10 USTA under 12
The title of today article… was borrowed from a quote of Antonine de Saint- Exupéry… the author of the Little Prince book… and I would like to recall an article being part of Smrikva Bowl mission section since April 2009 … and is dedicated to THE FORCE… we like to name “LOVe”… and I like to think of it as… the ”eVOLve”… :)
… very powerfull but also very painfull force… from time to time…
THE LITTLE PRINCE…by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry… is a very special book that every person at different age read differently.
It is a book that last over time and was likely the last love gift Antoine de Saint-Exupéry made to his wife Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry.
Over time this book was translated into many different languages thus become a love gift for many generations around the world.
It is a children’s book writen for the olders… and I like many parts of it… especially the description that Antoine make of the adult people… the description of the moment when the rose was born… the importance of the right orders on the King’s planet… “you never know” statement… the meeting with the wise fox… the smiling stars and many other parts…
… and just one more thing… Only best friends, when they trust each other, do share their deep knowledge… and once The Little Prince and the fox created such a special relationship the fox shared a secret with him…
“Goodbye, said the fox. And now here is my secret, a very simple secret. It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry beleived in the title of todays’ article that: “Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction”…
…whatever he thought with that say… I like it… ;)

Neven Krivokuca, 10th Smrikva Bowl 2005 player, played his third ITF tournament in Oman and obtained the victory in doubles playing with Braun from Germany
I enjoyed watching over the last months from the new Smrikve Lounge terrace the preparation of Neven with Miro Hrvatin…
The first check was Bangladesh International Junior Tennis Tournament 2011 at the end of the last year played in Dhaka… and there Neven obtained his victory in single…
This time in Oman… at International Junior Oman 2 his trophy was obtained in doubles with Bruan from Germany…

... now it is a good time to increase the preparation and training level… day after day we will start going in Smrikve towards spring… a good weather season… thus good time to continue to increase the preparation for new challanges…
Bravo Meštri!

It is a good moment to congratulate all the Smrikva Bowl boys and girls that made excellent results around the World over the last few months... Florida, Rome, Tarbes...
Since foundation Smrikva Bowl was something more than tennis… the Ambassador’s Olive Trees… the cultural Library… the Ambassadors’ Day… the Smrikva Bowl Song… the wish to Inspire… but I would have never imagined the beauty of the story that former players would write around the World with their tennis rackets…
Today Smrikva Bowl boys and girls are spread in 53 countries and all the continents… and day after day they continue to write with their tennis virtue the new pages of the Smrikva story…
Over the last few months many World relevant junior tournaments were held and Smrikva Bowl brothers in arms ;) made honourable results everywhere…
“Little Mo” International, Orange Bowl, Eddie Herr, Lemon Bowl, Les Petit As just to mention few…
… and my wish today is to dedicate to all of them the article I wrote at the end of October 2010… that everyone can read with its own eyes and understand it through own experiences… but I would like to use it to say just CONGRATULATIONS AMBASSADORS :)
Smrikve, October 2010
The Star Wars “Return of the Jedi” is the first film I remember seeing with my dad at the cinema… it was 1983 and I was 10… the cinema was named “Istra”… I was the same age as the Smrikva Bowl players we host every year in Smrikve :)…
In the introduction of this article I would just underline that I like the way Jedi use the lightsabers and I like the way Smrikva Bowl kids use their rackets :)… Smrikve c Code is a story about virtue created by training and wish to learn…
My dad was pilot and for me watching The Star Wars with him at the cinema was a particular experience … I had many questions and he, as usual, with smile and pleasure answered to each of my questions…
Dad used to take me with him on the airport when I was little… and I remember him entering the cockpit of the plane with pilot helmet watching towards me and giving me the sign that he was ready to fly… than he turned on the engine of the plane and watched towards me again with smile in his eyes…
I stayed about 100 meters from the airplane with his colleagues and watched him taking his plane towards runway…
From the place where I stayed only part of the runway was visible because of the wood and he took the plane in the area that was invisible to me to prepare for the takeoff… I was able to hear the force of the engine… and when the sound of the force started to increase I knew that my dad will be visible soon… his colleagues were telling me “be ready soon your dad will come”… and when he started to be visible on the back of the plane there was the fire… almost half length of the airplane had the fire extension formed by his engine and I just noticed his helmet in the cockpit and followed by my kids eyes his airplane reaching the sky…
The Jedi are characters in the Star Wars universe bound to a code of morality and justice and are trained in the use of the light side of the force. They learn to use the Force, and weapons, known as lightsabers, which emits a controlled energy flow in the shape of a sword, to serve and protect their Republic and the galaxy from conflicts or government instability…
Since long time ago I started to note the ability of Smrikva Bowl kids using the racket and thinking at the same time on Jedi’s ability to use the lightsaber :)…
Some of my students use Wilson’s ying & young damper… known as Tao sign… they like the symbol but are still too young to have an idea about it ;)… I will try to use this symbol to help me explain how little the difference could be in forming a balance in anything we do… every action has a reaction in our World… in the first classes of physics we learn Newton’s third law…
Tao is an abstract concept found in Taoism, Confucianism, and more generally in ancient Chinese philosophy and East Asian cultures.
While the word itself translates as “way”, “path”, or “route”… it is often used philosophically to signify the fundamental nature of the World we are used to living on Earth… it is often referred to as “the nameless”, because neither it nor its principles can ever be adequately expressed in words.
While the Tao cannot be expressed, Taoism holds that it can be known, and its principles can be followed. Much of Taoist writing focuses on the value of following the Tao – called Te (virtue) – and of the ultimate uselessness of trying to understand or control Tao outright. This is often expressed through yin and yang arguments, where every action creates a counter-action as a natural, unavoidable movement within manifestations of the Tao.
I used the above short explenation to introduce the Codes used in the Star Wars universe…
As in the Tao symbol there were knights trained to use the dark side of the force and the light side… this is the way how mankind functioned since the human written memory goes back…
For new ideas people have to go beyond… out of the known patterns by using their imagination… the kids are many times Master in this…
“Truly wonderful the mind of a child is.”… :)
DARK SIDE (The Sith Code)
• Peace is a lie. There is only passion.
• Through passion, I gain strength.
• Through strength, I gain power.
• Through power, I gain victory.
• Through victory, my chains are broken.
• The Force shall free me.
LIGHT SIDE (The Jedi Code)
• There is no emotion, there is peace.
• There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
• There is no passion, there is serenity.
• There is no death, there is the Force.
The Jedi Code was rewritten by Grand Master Luke Skywalker upon reestablishing the Jedi Order:
• Jedi are the guardians of peace in the galaxy.
• Jedi use their powers to defend and to protect.
• Jedi respect all life, in any form.
• Jedi serve others rather than ruling over them, for the good of the galaxy.
• Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training.
Smrikve c code is the code…
I am pleased to close this article with Dire Straits and their Brothers in Arms song… starting with the sound of the thunder… The concert was made in 1988 to honour Nelson Mandela…
*BROTHERS IN ARMS *
These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you’ll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you’ll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms
Through these fields of destruction
Baptism of fire
I’ve whittnessed your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms
There’s so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones
Now the sun’s gone to hell
And the moon’s riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it’s written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We’re fools to make war
On our brothers in arms
