Dominic THIEM is in the winner, Borna CORIC reached the quarterfinals and Djere LASLO was in the Main Draw of 26th KONZUM Croatia OPEN 2015
Umag is a very special place during the week of July when the Croatia Open – ATP tournament is played at Stella Maris tennis centre…
Mr. Slavko Rasberger, the former tournament director, was able to create with sponsors and an army of volonteers one of the most beautiful public sport events in Istria and Croatia, confirmed also by numerous ATP excellence awards…
… over the last years tournament director Mr. Vanja Bozickovic did his best in following the path laid down by Mr. Rasberger starting from the top Croatian players that almost all were present over the last years editions…
… and from this year the Tournament has a new leadership with Mr. Lawrence Frankopan, StarWing Sports players management agency founder…
It is not easy to attract the top World players but as NIKE, one of the new tournament sponsors moto say… there is no better way then JUST DO IT :)…
The ATP tournament in UMAG was organized for the first time in 1990… and a lot of best World players played in Umag… Goran Ivanisevic, Carlos Moya, Ivan Ljubicic, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Nikolaj Davidenko, David Ferrer, Guillermo Canas, Goran Prpic, Thomas Muster, Gustavo Kuerten, Marcelo Rios, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and many others…
In 2007, Carlos Moya won his fifth Umag title. I was there that night and it was very nice for me to see Jofre Porta with Carlos Moya in Umag. Jofre Porta was Carlos Moya trainer since he was a kid… and he also trained Rafael Nadal from time tot ime… Jofre was in Smrikve in 2006 with Virginia Pena ranked third on 11th Smrikva Bowl 2006 and was the winner of 12th Smrikva Bowl 2007…
I was so happy to see in the Main Draws of single and double five Smrikva Bowl players: Dominic THIEM, Borna CORIC, Djere LASLO , Marin DRAGANJA and Dino MARCAN…
Walking around the tennis center allow you to see familiar faces :)… and the first day in UMAG on training courts we met Dominic Thiem, 8th Smrikva Bowl 2003 winner… I did not see him since 2003… it was a little kid when he left Smrikve and today is one of the most prominent World tennis players…
Tara was so happy to get her cap signed…
… he was training that day with Andrey RUBLEV… anther rising star… a very humble boy who signed with smile Tara and Stefo’s papers too…
Dominic THIEM is the first former Smrikva Bowl player to win an ATP tournament… and this week is with Borna CORIC, another Smrikva Bowl player, and one of the most prominent players in the World… and FOGNINI… they were both candidates to the tournaments final and Dominic in end crowned himself the winner of the 26th annual…

It was a pleasure to see Laslo playing 10 years after his Smrikva Bowl… and to see again his father that did not change at all… the same kindness and smile as he first entered Konoba when Laslo was only 8 years old… and in 2003 Laslo played with Dominic Thiem :)…
… and another surprise was to meet Drazen Prcic, a sport journalist and author of various books, among which I am pleased to recall the book Wild Card, which is part of the Smrikva Bowl Library… Drazen is friend of friends :)…
… Gael Monfils, donated this year to the Smrikva Bowl Lucky Draw his signed t-shirt, together with Borna Coric, Ana Ivanovic, Katie Swan and Dominic Thiem… and to see him play is simply fun and joy… and we had pleasure to see him playing double with his friend who tried his best… but the opponents were just a little bit better…
… every year more and more Smrikva kids growing up into stars makes my heart feel :) and proud of them doing their best to write one day their names on the stars reserved to the tennis players…
It is a very successful edition and true bravo to all the staff, players and visitors who are making this event one of the most beautiful public events in Istria and Croatia…

After the presentation of the actors of the Day… I am pleased to share a little piece of the Smrikve c Code story…
it is a story about virtue created by training and wish to learn… and to do that this year generation and STAR WARS imagination would help me again ;)
You have already met most of the actors presented over the past days and they do not need particular presentation any more ;)…
The Jedi are characters in the Star Wars universe bound to a code of morality and justice and are trained in the use of the light side of the force.
They learn to use the Force, and weapons, known as lightsabers, which emits a controlled energy flow in the shape of a sword, to serve and protect their Republic and the galaxy from conflicts or government instability…
Since long time ago I started to note the ability of Smrikva Bowl kids using the racket and thinking at the same time on Jedi’s ability to use the lightsaber :)…
Some of my students use Wilson’s ying & young damper… known as Tao sign… they like the symbol but are still too young to have an idea about it ;)…
I will try to use this symbol to help me explain how little the difference could be in forming a balance in anything we do… every action has a reaction in our World…
….in the first classes of physics we learn Newton’s third law…
Tao is an abstract concept found in Taoism, Confucianism, and more generally in ancient Chinese philosophy and East Asian cultures.
While the word itself translates as “way”, “path”, or “route”… it is often used philosophically to signify the fundamental nature of the World we are used to living on Earth…
… it is often referred to as “the nameless”, because neither it nor its principles can ever be adequately expressed in words.
While the Tao cannot be expressed, Taoism holds that it can be known, and its principles can be followed.
Much of Taoist writing focuses on the value of following the Tao – called Te (virtue) – and of the ultimate uselessness of trying to understand or control Tao outright.
This is often expressed through yin and yang arguments, where every action creates a counter-action as a natural, unavoidable movement within manifestations of the Tao.
I used the above short explanation to introduce the Codes used in the Star Wars universe :)…
As in the Tao symbol there were knights trained to use the dark side of the force and the light side… this is the way how mankind functioned since the human written memory goes back…
For new ideas people have to go beyond… out of the known patterns by using their imagination… the kids are many times Master in this…
“Truly wonderful the mind of a child is.”… :)
… and today is the FINALS Day… the day of the Cake… Awarding Ceremony Day… and the Day of the Swimming Pool :D

Having introduced some of the actors of the Fourth and Lucky Draw Day… I would be pleased to share just few promised words behind Smrikva ;)…
Romeo…
Matej and Luka seems ready to hear part of the story ;)…
Smrikva Bowl mission is to inspire, develop and spread cosmopolitan values. Love, friendship and empathy are cosmopolitan values per excellence for people and humanity…
What does that mean Andrea?… your smirking smile may show a need to explain a bit more ;)…
CULTURE, CHILDREN, SPORT and MUSIC are part of the Smrikva Bowl idea of the cosmopolitan world. It is a matter of civilization …
O yes Kodai… an inspired character…
…a truly wise windy, product of imagination, once whispered… “Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.” (M.Y.)… and fairy tales seems to help that beauty…
You are still young Vanesa…
… but I am sure you will cross in the future with the following opinion… “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” (A.E.)…
Tea and Mio…
… and also Emma and Mao…
I noted that all of you are very calm during hard points… and usually in tennis game, as well as in many other fields, it does not matter what goes wrong but your reaction to it…
… we received special gifts for the Lucky Draw from… Dominic Thiem, Katie Swan, Ana Ivanovic, Borna Coric, Gael Monfils…
… and their success could teach us how fear and anger are for the brain the same as cramps for the muscles…
and Borna’s gift may help me to say…
… what Master Yoda noted “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”…
O yes Taki, Malak, Tea and Lara… in tennis seems to be the same… if you want to win more… you master your skills and believe in your game ;)
There are different ways to look at sport. There are different ways to look at music, culture, love and also to children.
The vision of sport preferred in Smrikve can be described and extended to: culture, music and children using the following Nelson Mandela – Madiba’s words…
Try to remember the following Malak :D
… “Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of peace.”
Dominic Thiem t-shirt he had on this year Australian Open… won Ofek… and I am pleased to say to Ofek and the other 20th annual Ambassadors…
that … a wise men living in China 2500 years ago once observed… “To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must cultivate our personal life; and to cultivate our personal life, we must first set our hearts right.” … hmmm… sounds very interesting… hm hm :)
an interesting opinion…
… and to set your heart right you need good characters… those who wish to contribute to the greater public good had to begin by working on themselves…
… only then they will see progress radiate out from their personal circles to society at large…
Today is the semifinals day… the BRIONI Islands Day… and IGRA GAME Day :D… a lot to do and a lot to see ;)….

Some pictures of the 20th Smrikva Bowl 2015 actors... taken during the third day of their Smrikva Bowl... the day when they start super IGRA game... pictures to share Smrikva Bowl Library story...
Third Smrikva Bowl day is the day when the IGRA game start… and is also the day when the quarterfinalist of the edition start to be known… girls quarterfinalist were known already yesterday and today we get the quarterfinalist of the boys Main Draw and of both Consolation Draws…
Third day is also the FORUM day… knowledge sharing day…
I am pleased to start today’s story with the following artistic group :) Given… Jacquelyn… Lara… Julia… and friends… ;) and also take the opportunity to share a bit of the story of our Library with the actors of the third day…
It was 2009 when we started to build the Smrikva Bowl library… and each Smrikva Bowl player was requested to bring with him a cultural book that will remember his stay in Smrikve and will represent his culture of origin that one day guests of Smrikve will be able to consult, enjoy and discover…
… and with Andrea’s picture I would like to say that I do like books ;)…
With this year edition Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors are spread in over 70 countries and all the continents… and the library reached around 700 books from around 60 countries…
… Alvaro’s serve will help me to say… that Historically their task was to search the talented kids in their countries of origin and invite them to play the Smrikva Bowl but from this year they are also our Cultural Ambassadors…
… and… with Dino’s forehand… I would explain that Cultural Ambassadors is both spreading the Smrikva idea and spreading the ISTRIA from SMRIKVE E-book… the cultural e-book for travelers…
It was shared yesterday with kids that the old olive tree Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors plant every year is a symbol of friendship and intergenerational responsibility and Smrikva Bowl’s idea of children, sport, music and culture that are able to pass all frontiers are incorporated in the creation of this Smrikva Bowl Library.
… Ofek’s backhand will help me to say… that in some languages… the word generations means also history… and in my first book on European Union and Cosmopolitan Democracy I come to a simple conclusion that we are those who represent the current civilization.
O yes Iker, Alvaro y Jose ;)… this is an important concept…
Today people live an average of about 80 years. What we call civilization is mostly made up of the human knowledge we have accumulated until today, which our institutions pass onto future generations.
Adriana above and Pepe below will help me explain the importance of a quality book…
They represent a great human memory that can help us understand what we see combined with cumulated personal experience of our daily lives. But given the fragility of the circle of life it is very easy for people to ignore these facts and lose sight of our human knowledge. It takes just a few generations to lose this great heritage ;)
With above Federico’s picture… I’d like to observe that we have gotten used to rapid technological progress, but social and civil progress is slower and more complex. Humans learn throughout their whole lifetime, from books and schools, but we also mostly learn from our personal experiences.
… and with Andrew, Lev and Ofek… I just wish to say that Smrikva Bowl’s more then tennis is something you find above… hm… not only tennis… music… culture… children… sport… four interesting pillars…
Smrikva Bowl mission is to develop and spread cosmopolitan values. Love, friendship and empathy are cosmopolitan values per excellence for people…
Friendship… is long term trust… and long term bridge… always takes time to get built… and always require maintenance ;)…
… and IGRA game is spreading… it is reaching different places… different continents…
… with music… run… play… and say “IGRA” :)
…today the “IGRA” game will continue after the single matches…

Some pictures of the 20th Smrikva Bowl 2015 actors... taken during the second day of their Smrikva Bowl... the day when they became AMBASSADORS... pictures with Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors Olive Trees story...
Yesterday a bit after 8:00 PM the Smrikva Bowl players of this year edition became Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors… the ceremony started at 6:00 PM…
I am pleased to repeat the story of the Smrikva Bowl Olive Trees traditionally planted in Smrikve with some pictures taken during the second day :)… being this moment one of the most important parts of the Smrikva Bowl story… and will start with Teodora who was the first to sign the Ambassador picture…
In 2005, for the 10th Smrikva Bowl anniversary, we started a tradition of planting an Olive tree… and Theo’s expression will help me to give you few more details behind the idea ;)…
The Olive tree selected was at the beginning older than the oldest man living on the earth today. The tree that we planted for the 10th Smrikva Bowl was over 150 years old… and Branko’s nomination may help you to remember that ;)…
…Malwina’s nomination picture to anchor that during the ceremony, every Ambassador put a tiny piece of land close to the root of the Olive tree and say his or her name. This way the tree gets their names…
This year for the first time it was the name and a Grand Slam ;)… the children know the story…
During the ceremony of the 20th Smrikva Bowl Olive Tree Generation… the tree received new names… and Emma was among them :)…
… Yakup smile help me to say that… the Olive tree is a symbol of peace… but the age of the tree means intergenerational responsibility…
Jaka will remind that… every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to understand and to learn to preserve all that each of us is born with… :)
… while Mare and Viktor on the Ambassador’s door will help me to share that to me… The Lion King cartoon is an artwork and most of the life messages one can find in it are in line with the Smrikva Bowl founding ideas… ;)
… Rania might already know or learn one day… that the life messages you find in Lion King are in line with the message of the Ambassadors’ Olive Tree; they are in line with the values of friendship and love; they are in line with empathy…
and Vanessa smile how… Love, friendship and empathy are all Cosmopolitan values per excellence, as far as people and humanity are concerned…
… O yes Jacquelin… it is true that the relationship between Mufasa, Sarabi and Simba reminds me of both: parents and family love, but also about the intergenerational responsability.
and Aryan nomination will help to say that… Timon, Pumbaa and Simba relationship reminds me about love between friends. Pumbaa also make me think abuout empathy, intuition and loyalty.
… there are other important relationships in the Lion King Malak… and the relationship between Simba and Nola reminds me again about the importance of love… :)
… with Tara’s nomination I would like to remind that Rafiki, the wise old baboo, with his many centuries old tree reminds me about the importance of knowledge and experience of the older…
… my little friend at the door will help to say… that there are many other particular moments that every person on its own, based on his or her own life experience, discover by watching these artworks.
You might be interested to know that most of the characters’s names in this cartoon have a particular meaning in Swahili language…
Simba means “lion”… maybe Given already knows that because her little brother truly love fairy tales ;)…
Nala means “gift”, and love is for me one of the greatest gifts that people can receive and give during their life
Sarabi means “mirage”…
Pumbaa means “dull-witted” or “stunned”…
and Rafiki means “friend” :)… ahora lo sabes Jose ;)
These names with their meanings make me think of the American Indians and the way they used to give the names to their people.
As I wrote at the beginning of today’s article every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to understand and to learn, to preserve all that each of us is born with.
When Mufasa was explaining to Simba that is not easy to be the King… he tried to explain that a good King should know that everything around us lives in a delicate equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it…
Pepe y Iker’s Grand Slam victory of yesterday could help me to recall that is true that every generation face new challenges but there are many examples in the past how the old generations managed and solved particular problems… ;)
…and this is why… knowledge, human curiosity and will to learn are important… for any of our “victories” Mare:)
It was another long Smrikva day… ended with a Grand Slam dream victory and good LEDO ice cream at the end :)…
… everybody wished to make true their dream ;)
… and Given’s brother enjoyed watching her sister giving their best to do it ;)…
… o yes…
… winning with smile :)
and then ice cream award :D
… it was a long day Theo…
… long day for Marc too…
… tomorrow is the new day…
… IGRA game day…
…boys quarterfinals…
… it is the day to choose IGRA partners…
and the FORUM day…
Today the 20th Smrikva Bowl generation will discover the IGRA game… and we will get to know the quarterfinalist of Boys Main Draw and Consolation Draws…
The girls quarterfinals names of the Main Draw are already known :)

… the players were presented…
