Last weekend the 20th Tennis Coach Conference organized by Slovene Tennis Coach Association was held in Otočec (Slovenia)

Over the last weekend the 20th Tennis Coach Conference was organized by the Slovene Tennis Coach Association at the Šport Hotel Otočec… and thanks to the very good relationship between the Slovene Tennis Coach Association and Croatian Tennis Coach association I was pleased to attend the event organized and run by Dr. Aleš Filipčič, Slovene Tennis Coach Association President, and his team…

The conference general theme was “Success of Tennis Players coming from Former-Yugoslav countries”… and it was a pleasure to see over the two days program many top tennis coaches from Slovenia and other Former-Yugoslavia countries sharing their experiences…

The impressive list of speakers included tennis Legend Nikola »Niki« Pilić (CRO), Nikica Nadali (CRO), Vjeran Bayo Friščić (CRO), Aleš Filipčič (SLO), Dušan Milojković (SRB), Zlatko Soše (BIH), Marko Por (SLO), Gordan Janković (CRO), Hrvoje Zmajić (TE/ITF), Goran Shevchenko (MKD), Tomaž Mencinger (SLO), Tomaž Berendijaš (SLO), Bogdan Janša (SLO)…

It was two days of high quality, intensive tennis knowledge sharing experience…

After Aleš Filipčič conference opening speech Hrvoje Zmajić, ITF/Tennis Europe Development Officer for Europe, presented the success of Tennis Europe story… and the new project “TennisCoachEdu”…

… it was followed by Aleš Filipčič presentation of “Long-term serve development”…

Aleš made a nice presentation of the elements on which every coach should pay attention at different age… with numerous exercises to develop particular sensations starting with an early age… till the pro level…

… very nice was to see through videos the concentration and evolution of a serve… which is very important to me for the quality expectation management of the parents, our own expectations and the players’ expectations…

The story reminds me… that the same as a tree… it requires time to develop… in tennis I would say time and quality work…

Tomaž Mencinger presented the “Tactical training under pressure”… and introduced various elements which have impact on Momentum management…

It was a nice presentation… and I was very pleased to see a Smrikva Bowl player helping to explain the elements… Živa Falkner played some exercises guided by Tomaž :)…

The following Case study was also very interesting… presented by Marko Por… Marko presented “Grega Žemlje and Blaž Kavčič development”…

He presented an inspiring story of Grega and Blaž who were the first two Slovene players to crack into TOP 100 ATP… it was like a movie story… the formation of a dream team of coaches and people who believed in young players… and helped them to develop with internal Club forces… very nice and inspiring story…

Gordan Janković theme was “Player’s path from 12&under to the junior Grand Slam”… Gordan trained two Smrikva kids I remember well… Ajla Tomljanovic and Živa Falkner… and in his presentation Gordan summarized some of the key milestones that most of the players go through…although each player may follow a different development path…

The round table… panel discussion was scheduled for 5:30 PM… and was expected to last till 8:00 PM… the list of the speakers included: Niki Pilić, Vjeran Bajov Friščić, Nikica Nadali, Blaž Trupej, Tomaž Mencinger, Marko Por, Gordan Janković, Goran Schevchenko; Dušan Milojković, Zlatko Soše, Bogdan Janša and Anže Bašelj…

… a big and nice surprise to me was the presentation of a movie recently made on a legendary Slovenian – Yugoslavian tennis player Mima Jaušovec… Mima is perhaps most notable to the large public for winning the 1977 Roland Garros single championship…

The movie received various awards… and it was full of nice stories Mima with her family and friends shared via movie…

Very impressive story to me was her Orange Bowl victory in 1973… she arrived in Florida with only two Dunlop rackets… and one broke on her first training… without a racket she was so concerned how to play a tournament… and by luck a Wilson representative seeing how sad she was… decided to donate her two new Jack Kramer rackets :)

… and in the end she won the tournament…

… after the victory she was requested by the organizer if she would like her name to be inscribed on the victory bowl… and she said yes… without thinking how much it would cost… it was 25 USD… 50% of her total budget she had in the US…

… the whole movie is a fairy tale like… with lot of nice moments… brother Zoran… the family… some close friends such as Niki Pilić shared their memories…

…brother Zoran was always there to help when needed…

Niki Pilić was present on the conference… and in the movie he was interviewed…

… the moment I liked a lot was when Mima explained how Niki taught her how to play volleys… and the day after I was pleased to see Niki how he still plays great volleys :)…

… Niki said they also played mixed doubles together and recalled some other nice moments spent together…

Mima was among the most successful players of her time not only in Slovenia but also in Yugoslavia… and various players such as Slobodan Živojinović shared that they were inspired by her example to forge their dreams…

… Mima in the movie return to the Central Court in Paris…

… and you can see on her face the emotions of the 1977 finals moments still very live in her heart…

The movie was a perfect introduction for the panel discussion…

… and Niki Pilić, Vjeran Bajo Friščić, Nikica Nadali, Blaž Trupej, Tomaž Mencinger, Marko Por, Gordan Janković, Goran Schevchenko; Dušan Milojković, Zlatko Soše, Bogdan Janša, Anže Bašelj… presented shortly their stories…

… Goran Prpić story was shared by Nikica Nadali

Niki Pilić was sharing over 50 years of his experience… ATP story… 1973… Davis Cup victories… 5 times with 3 different countries… stories of over 40 players he helped to enter TOP 100 in the World…. and stories of some tennis Legends he guided for years who are still writing the tennis history of today… Novak Djokovic… Becker…

… very nice experience…

… being this year the 20th anniversary… the Official dinner was arranged as the last gathering moment of the first conference day…

The second conference day started with Vjeran Bayo Friščić… Bayo was the first speaker of the morning…

Over the last 7 year I read over 150 tennis and sport related books… and his book “Tenis bez tajni” is still among preferred books I read in Croatian language… few years ago I had pleasure to meet Bayo during Smrikva Bowl he attended with one of his students…

… and it was a great pleasure to see him again and listen his extraordinary and very intelligent presentation…

… the theme was “Why the young tennis players do not perform complete strokes”… Bayo presented his lesson in an extraordinary way which last in time… the elements he presented are the heart of the great tennis… not relevant only today… but it was relevant yesterday and it will be relevant tomorrow…

The Legendary Niki followed Bayo…

… and Niki made a tennis lesson “Tennis training with young promising juniors” that I super enjoyed… between elements Niki presented he always went back to search in his deep memory of experience the examples he lived… very nice…

… the coaches with different backgrounds… having in common the love for this game…

Goran Schevchenko… Hrvoje Zmajić assistant at ITF… presented his last experience as ITF traveling coach… very interesting program set up by ITF for promising juniors… and his lesson on “How to be a good team leader on junior tour”… introduced a lot of human and professional elements that are important for those who dream to become coaches one day… and help kids to grow into independent and responsible individuals…

… the various elements… such as wake up in the middle of the night to be like a parent to the player who is sick… was a good introduction to the following subject exposed by Dušan Milojković… “Ethics in tennis”…

Dušan is Professor… and he has nice way of exposing the subject… he used his long experience, the same as Niki, to make the elements reach your deep memory…

… Dušan was the last one to sparing with Monica Seleš before she left the country for the US… and he shared a lot of stories of how coach can influence the life of his students and people around him… in a simple and daily manner… doing your best…

Zlatko Soše followed Professor Milojković… and his theme was “How to use IT in club organisation”… this was a good introduction to the various presentatiosn that followed… because all had in common the possibilities IT technology is offering to tennis today…

Tomaž Berendijaš presented his theme “Ideal performance state – hot to measure it” showing how technology can help us to measure this apparently invisible element… the mental power and Momentum management capability…

“The Momentum – hidden force in tennis”… is one of my preferred tennis books… and Tomaž and his university team are trying to find the way to measure it… at least to prove the physical evidence of the invisible… the same way as we can not see the wind… but we can see its effects… the waves on the water…

… very interesting element for any tennis level… because tennis is after all mainly a mental game…

“Financial support of Sport Foundation” was presented by Bogdan Janša

In each country… no matter how big it is or how powerful it is… there is always importance of availability and allocation of financial resources… and Slovenian case was presented…

Money is comparable to organic waste… if only in one place , then mainly stinks… but if well allocated then can become food and life… the same in tennis… if well allocated resources can simply nurture talents…

Tone Lovšinj was the last conference speaker… introducing an amazing adult learning tennis game instrument named Playsight… really amazing and nice tool… quite expensive but very nice ;)… probably in less then a decade the price will sharply decrease and every club will install it not only to improve your game but also to have fun… which the game is all about… to have fun…

… and at the end Aleš Filipčič closed the conference… and probably already started to think about the next year gathering…

It was a great conference :)…

Last week end the 17th International Tennis Symposium was held at Centro Pavesi in Milan (Italy) promoted by Pro Camp MGM Italia, UISP and GPTCA

I spent this week end at Centro Pavesi in Milan participating the 17th International Tennis Symposium… as per tradition the Symposium gathered many interesting speakers and it was again an opportunity to learn something new…

This year the event was promoted by Pro CAMP MGMG Italia and sponsored by UISP (Unione Italiana Sport per tutti) and GPTCA (Global Professional Tennis Coach Association)…

GPTCA is a quite a new fast growing tennis association of Profesional Coaches – certified by ATP – and chaired by Alberto CASTELLANI… Alberto CASTELLANI was also this year the main facilitator of the event because as last two years also this year the Symposium was combined with GPTCA Certification Course…

After the welcome word of the Symposium president Mr. Massimo Rossi over the week end many speakers shared their experience with the group

Alberto CASTELLANI, Dimitrav KATSANOS, Patricio REMONDEGUI, Salvador NAVARRO, Luca BOTTAZZI, Francesco GAMBETTI, Fabrizio SENATORE, Franco CASTELLI, Alexandr NIKITI, Carlo ROSSI

The main theme was “DEVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION SKILLS TRAINING”…

The first topic presented was named “The Circuit Training Combination: physical, technical and mental – How to train speed and coordination”… and was presented by Dimitrav KATSANOS and Alberto CASTELLANI

Dimitrav KATSANOS is the author of a new book “The Matrix of Tennis – A holistic approach in Tennis”. The book goes beyond technique, tactic, fitness and mental training and sheds a light on all peripheric areas which are also crucial to develop a top athlete and person… and parts of the books were included in his very interesting presentation…

The following topic was actually another new book presentation… and it was presented by the author of the same… Luca BOTTAZZI

Luca Bottazzi and Carlo Rossi published recently the book named “Il codice del tennis. Bill Tilden. Arte e scienza del gioco”…

It is an amazing book… presenting a tennis genius Bill Tilden and his heritage… Bill Tilden wrote over 30 books on tennis and won most of the most prestigious tennis events of his time many times… Wimbledon… Davis Cup… but the way he loved and understood the game was probably second to none of his time… and might be second to few till the time we are living today… “The Art of Lawn Tennis” was written in 1920… and I would strongly recommend it to each person who wish to discover a little of Tilden’s understanding of the game…

“Match Play and the Spin of the Ball” was published in 1925 and is another of his masterpieces… Bottazzi and Rossi’s book… is really a book that you read in a breath… curious to discover page after page what Tilden discovered in trying to understand and develop his game…

Patricio REMONDEGUI followed with his presentation and he made some court exercises with the group of students… it was a real pleasure to watch at work the coach who helped Robin KERN in his tennis growth… and Robin played Smrikva Bowl in 2002 … Giulia LAMBIASE is another of his students and Giulia also played Smrikva…

The title of the topic presented by Patricio was: “The rhythm: the coordination skills to move better and faster on the court”…

Patricio presented the big influence that music can have in developing a player… and at “La Bottega” di Smrikve and during Smrikva Bowl… I keep sharing this element since 2011…

At the time I was inspired reading a book which was describing Larisa Preobrazhenskaya’s teaching method… and after that I started to apply it… I graduated at conservatory of music and it was not hard for me to understand the various potential links and bridges that could be applied to let players develop further and better…

It was a very nice presentation… with excellent kids and players who were performing and helping Remodegui to present the class…

After Patricio… the program continued with Francesco GAMBETTI… the founder of AITI… a very interesting and useful association idea that is expected to develop in Italy but in my opinion would be of interest to people who are dedicating to teach tennis world wide…

Salvador NAVARRO followed by…

Salvador Navarro presented his experience with Flavia Pennetta… US OPEN 2015 winner… it is one of his last professional Coaching experiences…

… and Salvador was presenting how to get the best performance from a Player… another very interesting presentation of motivation and confidence building…

… another part of the Symposium was dedicated to various recent scientific reports… and the first speaker to present his part was… Fabrizio SENATORE

… some very interesting statistics were presented… which always when concentrated looks impressive…

… another very nice part was presented by Franco CASTELLI… that can be used in mental training… the inspiration for this work come from Greek tragedy… very interesting and funny presentation was arranged :)…

…Alexandr NIKITI from Prague… presented Suleyanov’s approach… “A Biologically determined concept for Athlets preparation”…

During the last day… Carlo ROSSI presented “Development of coordination skills and technical learning: from basic Tennis to the top”…

…after Patricio’s second part… which was already unexpected due to impossibility of Toni Nadal to reach Milan this year… Alberto CASTELLANI made one of his great lessons…

… it was “Bioenergetics” class… more then amazing and fun part of this year event…

Alberto CASTELLANI, a part of being a coach, is a great fun of culture, art and history thus his presentation are usually coloured with deep notes related with culture that I always enjoy…

… and he is, among other, the President of the ATP Global Professional Tennis Coach Association… and GPTCA can count on huge network of coaches around the World therefor the subjects elected to be shared are always of interest…

It was another Symposium “good year”… :)

21/10/15

We collected olives and made olive oil that will end up in bottles for the 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 Ambassadors - Istrian olive oil - one of the best in the World and Smrikva kids "seeds of the legends" are making it more and more special year after year...

Yesterday and today was a very long day… 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 Smrikva Bowl olive oil collection day…

… with over 10 friends we started to gather for the olive oil collection at 8:30 AM…

… and we returned home late in the afternoon from the olive mill with anther golden green annual :)

It is the 2016 Smrikva Bowl olive oil production :)…

In Smrikve is considered 2016 production because the next year every new Smrikva Bowl Ambassador will receive a bottle of it.

We moved from Smrikve to Fazana to collect the first part of the day…

later on we moved from Fazana to Valbandon… Villa Taste to collect the second part of the day…

… and than we finally reached Smrikve again…

and continued to collect all around Smrikve…

from the olive trees which hold names over 1100 players who planted some of our trees from 72 countries and all the continents…

In Smrikve we produce Istrian olive oil that has over 2000 years old tradition in olive oil making and was considered among the best one in the Roman Empire and today is still considered among the best one in the World.

During the Smrikva Bowl we use to give to every Smrikva Bowl Ambasador a bottle of oil as a memory to their Smrikva Bowl.

We are already able to produce special and limited collections of the Smrikva Bowl olive oil from the Smrikva Bowl centuries old olive trees planted by some of the future tennis Champions… the long road full of sweat and tears… and in end smile :)

Since 2009 Smrikva Bowl kids won 16 Junior GRAND SLAM Tournaments in total… very soon senior GRAND SLAM titles will come…

…and this year two players reached TOP 20 ATP and WTA ranking for the first time… Dominic THIEM and Belinda BENCIC

The tradition of the olive oil production started to develop in Istria during the time of the Emperor Augustus. Thanks to the olive oil Pula was for few centuries one of the richest towns in the Roman Empire and this is one of the main reasons why Pula got its magnificent Arena.

It is important to say that at the time olive oil was not used only as the salad dressing as we use it today but it was used also for lighting thus it was important as todays are important the sources of energy we use. It was the gold of its period. This explain the status and importance Pula had during the Roman Empire time.

Romans had deep knowledge of olive oil making and we do know that they had five different olive oils quality ranking:

1. Oleum ex albis ulivis: first quality olive oil made by green and white olives
(THIS IS WHAT WE DO FROM THE SMRIKVA BOWL OLIVES)
2. Viride: olive oil made by the olives that started to become black
3. Maturum: olive oil made by mature olives
4. Caducum: olive oil made by olives collected from the ground
5. Cibarium: olive oil made by rotten olives

In 2005, for the 10th Smrikva Bowl anniversary, we started the tradition of planting an old Olive tree. The Olive tree selected was older than the oldest man living on the earth today.

On Brioni island there is an olive tree from the beginning of the 4th century that is one of the oldest olive trees in Europe… and many Smrikva Bowl kids visit it every year…

Marcus Valerius Martialis, native from Cordoba, who lived in the 1st century AD, during the Roman Empire times, celebrated Istrian olive oil with the following verses: “Uncto Corduba Laetior Venafro Histra Nec Minus Absolute Testa”. The translation in English would be: “Cordoba, you being more fertile than the olive oil region of Venafro and so perfect as the oil (amphora) from Istria”.

How to describe 20 years? … 20 years of passion and inspiration…

… maybe a good start would be to mention over 1580 kids and life stories spread in 72 countries who played the event since 1996… over 710 signed books in the Smrikva Bowl library from 61 country (started in 2009)… over 1100 names given to 11 old Smrikva Bowl olive trees (started in 2005)… 16 junior GRAND SLAM titles since 2009… 7 professional ATP/WTA titles since 2014… 9 Smrikva Bowl players are members of the TOP 100 ATP/WTA Club… 3 players are members of the TOP 20 ATP/WTA Club… numerous victories over the last decade in the most prestigious under 12, 14, 16, 18 tournaments around the World…

… but Smrikva Bowl story to me was always more then numbers and more then tennis… and I am gratful to the Smrikva Bowl players, families, coaches, friends who in most different ways inspire me to do better and help my family and friends to go beyond our imaginations…

I am aware that people today do not have time to read long letters ;)… and my letters are usually long :)… I know that not everybody will reach the bottom of this letter… but I hope that those who do it will find it of interest and may enjoy Smrikva ideas, recalling some moments spent together in Smrikve…

I like to repeat myself from time to time… it is teaching I learned from Rafiki in Lion King 3 when he said to Timoon and Pumba that a story we like should be repeated more then once ;)… and I am saying this for those who know me well and will find most of my thinking already known ;D…

It is the 21st of September 2015… and it is the selection date start for the 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 edition…

I will also take the opportunity to announce the 2nd Smrikva Bowl Tennis Talents Family Week (SBTTFW) 2016 edition with Luca Appino, reserved for only eight past Smrikva Bowl tennis talents and families and will be held from 16th till 23rd of April 2016…

Today is also celebrated the International Day of Peace, also known as the World Peace Day… and many years ago this date was selected as the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors Day (“SBA” Day)…

The SBA Day, although celebrated on the same day as the World Peace Day, is dedicated to intergenerational responsibility, civilization and tennis. Without civil society in a modern world there is no guarantee for peace… and both civil society and peace are the pillars for any talent development…

In 2005, for the 10th Smrikva Bowl anniversary, we started a tradition of planting an old Olive tree during Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors Nomination Ceremony. The Olive tree selected was older than the oldest man living on the earth today… during the ceremony, every Ambassador put a tiny piece of land close to the root and donated his/her name to the tree…

The Olive tree is a symbol of peace in various cultures… and his age is symbol of intergenerational responsibility. Every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to understand and to learn to preserve all that each of us is born with… this is the message SBA Olive trees transmit… intergenerational responsibility alone will allow future generations to enjoy the beauty of life, the sunsets and the seasons of the earth.

Smrikva Bowl is dedicated to children… and to find the proper way to communicate with them I learned to love cartoons… cartoons help me to speak with children and to be understood by them… The Lion King is nice one for the Old Olive Tree story that I am pleased to share today again on the World Peace Day… the Circle of Life story…

This cartoon is full of life messages which are in line with the Smrikva Bowl dream. They are in line with the message of the Ambassadors’ Olive Tree; they are in line with the values of friendship and love; they are in line with empathy. Love, friendship and empathy are all Cosmopolitan values per excellence, as far as people and humanity are concerned.

The relationship between Mufasa, Sarabi and Simba reminds me of parents and family love, but also the intergenerational responsibility.

Timon, Pumbaa and Simba relationship reminds me about love between friends. Pumbaa also make me think about empathy, intuition and loyalty. The relationship between Simba and Nola reminds me again about the importance of love.

Rafiki, the wise old baboo, with his many centuries old tree reminds me about the importance of knowledge and experience of the older. There are many other particular moments that every person on its own, based on his or her own life experience, discovers by watching cartoon artworks.

…most of the character’s names in this cartoon have a particular meaning in Swahili language: Simba means “lion”; Nala means “gift”, and love is in many cultures one of the greatest gifts that people can receive and give during their life; Sarabi means “mirage”; Pumbaa means “dull-witted” or “stunned”; and Rafiki means “friend” :)…

Every children is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to understand and to learn, to preserve all that each of us is born with.

When Mufasa was explaining to Simba that is not easy to be the King… a good King should know that everything around us lives in a delicate equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it. The intergenerational responsibility is the key to allow future generations to enjoy the beauty of life, the sunsets and the seasons of the earth.

To end this introductory comment I am pleased to repeat words of a Nobal Prize for Peace – guest speaker to one of Ambrosetti’s Young Leader Group meetings: “The future is always in a minority. Yet the history of the future is more important than the history of the past. It is for the old to remember the past. It is for the young to build the world of tomorrow.

Do it! You can build a world without wars. You can build a new humanity.”

It is worth bearing in our minds that Peace is always a delicate equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it. Knowledge, human curiosity and will to learn are important. They are all parts of the civilization path.

Our Nobel Prize guest used in his note the statement: “Do it!” thus reminded me Yoda’s wisdom words when he shares his knowledge with young Jedi: “There is no try. Do or do not ” ;)

Long time ago I learned when people believe in the future there is future…. and when people do not beleive in the future there is no future.

The books represent the greatest human memory that can help us understand what we see combined with cumulated personal experience of our daily lives. But given the fragility of the circle of life it is very easy for people to ignore these facts and lose sight of our human knowledge. It takes just a few generations to lose this great heritage.

We have gotten used to rapid technological progress, but social and civil progress is slower and more complex. Humans learn throughout their whole lifetime, from books and schools, but we also mostly learn from our personal experiences.

We are those who represent the current civilization.

This is an important concept. Today people live an average of about 80 years. What we call civilization is mostly made up of the human knowledge we have accumulated until today, which our institutions pass onto future generations… and this is part of the idea hidden behind the Smrikva Bowl Library foundation in 2009…

World Peace Day is a good day to start the research of the Smrikva Bowl talents for the 2016 edition… and with this e-mail the selection process for the 21st annual Smrikva Bowl 2016 starts.

21th Smrikva Bowl 2016 will be held in Pula-Istria, Croatia, from (18th) 20th till 25th of June 2016. Smrikva Bowl, as most of you may know, gathers under 10 tennis talents from all over the World…

When I think of Smrikva Bowl I always imagine it as a theater where every year we work hard to set the stage where the world’s talents can gather… Every year we gather very special kids, arriving from different cultures, having different dreams,…

We set the stage and later on they are in charge with their will, dreams and hard work… they are the ones who write the most different stories…

Smrikva Bowl is still very young tournament but I would like to think that some of these kids will write nice and inspiring stories in most different professional fields.

Year after year seems more and more likely that more than one senior Grand Slam Tournament will be conquered by Smrikva children… they already won every junior Grand Slam Tournament… since 2009… there were 13 Smrikva Bowl kids able to conquere 16 junior Grand Slam Titles in singles and doubles… and my dream and wishes goes beyond Grand Slam dream… being the SBA Day celebrated on a World Peace Day… and having mentioned in my letter the inspiring words of the Nobel Prize for Peace I am pleased to extend Grand Slam dream to more than one Nobel Prize for Peace dream…

I know that according to the statistics only few of the kids participating Smrikva Bowl will become top professional tennis players, but I like to think that they will make it in other professional fields they choose in their lives.

I will never know how many kids playing Smrikva Bowl are playing tennis because their parents would like them to become professional tennis players and how much of them play it because they enjoy the game.

What I do know is that any kind of sport can help kids in their growth and I also know that people that do excel in any field need full dedication and a lot of sacrifice to reach and master the excellence.

There is one part in Andre Agassi’s book that I liked a lot and I like to share it… it is about inspiration, faith and what does it mean to be a good coach… to have the right word in the right moment… and is about people who believe in other people and help them to write their life stories and to write their own… the following are Gil’s words when he accepted to help Agassi to inscribe his name on the sky of the Tennis Stars…

“I’m not one of those people who expresses or articulates feelings very well, but from now on, just know this: It’s on, man. It is on.

You know what I’m saying? We’are in a fight, and you can count on me until the last man is standing. Somewhere up there is a star with your name on it. I might not be able to help you find it, but I’ve got pretty strong shoulders, and you can stand on my shoulders while you’re looking for that star. You hear? For as long as you want. Stand on my shoulders and reach, man. Reach.”

In every life there are people that influence what we do and how we do it.

The Smrikva Bowl tennis talent gathering aims to inspire its Ambassadors to believe in their dreams and work hard to reach them.

Many people come to Smrikve with different expectations… not understanding that the result is not the key for being part of the Smrikva Bowl… and I need Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors’ help in explaining that Smrikva Bowl is… FUN and GAME… and to have fun in tennis… common sense and respect always come first…

There is a detailed presentation of the 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 edition with the application form and other relevant information on the main page of the Smrikva Bowl website:

http://www.smrikve.com/smrikva-bowl/

I am pleased to recall that 20th Smrikva Bowl 2015 gathered top players from 42 countries and all the continents…

Since the tournament foundation in 1996, over 1580 top players from 72 countries played in the event… This year… was the second time that over 50% of participants accepted were ranked #1 in their countries…

Smrikva Bowl “more than tennis” idea… would not be explained… will always remain left to the interpretation of each Ambassador… of their feelings because in end they are the one who are writing the Smrikva Bowl story… my only wish is that huge percentage of the interpretation may match my dream too…

As I wrote above, in 2005 we started to plant old olive trees during the Ambassadors’ nomination ceremony… and there are 11 special olive trees in Smrikve with over 1100 names from all around the World…

In 2009 the cultural tourism guide “Istria from Smrikve” was published and this is a gift to the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors and Smrikve friends… SBA are helping us in scouting talents around the world and our little Ambassadors also help us in spreading the word about Istria as cultural tourism destination worth visiting…

That same year, Smrikva Bowl participants started to bring a book about the culture of the place they are coming from thus we started to create Smrikva Bowl Library… from time to time we are also using the library as classroom for “La Bottega” di Smrikve students… donated book form a library of over 710 books from 61 countries…

Cosmopolite is another gift to Smrikve and our Ambassadors. It is dedicated to a book describing the importance of civilization for the talent development.

Many of you are our Ambassadors and I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that the number of the accepted players will be 96 players (48 girls and 48 boys) and your help will be precious.

If you know a good tennis player born in 2006 that deserves to play Smrikva Bowl or you wish to present your candidacy for the 2nd SBTTFW 2016 please let me know… and you are more than welcome to participate in helping to spread the word about Smrikva Bowl idea in your community.

I am pleased to recall that since the Smrikva Bowl foundation nine players reached TOP 100 ATP and WTA and their best ranking at the moment is the following: Belinda BENCIC (#12 WTA), Dominic THIEM (#18 ATP), Marin DRAGANJA (#20 ATP doubels), Borna CORIC (#33 ATP), Petra MARTIC (#42 WTA), Ajla TOMLJANOVIC (#47 WTA), Ana KONJUH (#55 WTA), Donna VEKIC (#62 WTA), Ivana LISJAK (#95 WTA)…

… for the end of my long presentation letter of the 21st annual… being today World Peace Day… I wish Smrikva kids to continue to inspire by example other children… and wish some of them may make true during their living and competing Nelson Mandela – Madiba’s words when he noted that “Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of peace.”

Thank you all for your help and attention and special thanks to all the people who return to visit us in Smrikve,

Mio

Today we finished to collect grapes and started the 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 - SMRIKVE Malvazija wine production

We just collected grapes and started 2016 Smrikve wine production… the wine collection of limited 160-200 bottles will be made as per tradition… and it will be donated to the families participating the 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 edition…

As per tradition we will do our best to make good wine…

Smrikve Malvazija is thanks to the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors spread in 72 countries and all the continents. Last year we created a limited collection of 160 bottles and never above 200 bottles… it is always a gift of our family to the Smrikva Bowl families and to our friends.

Wine and gastronomy are part of a culture and wine bottle that we give to every Smrikva Bowl family is part of our cultural gift that every year we are pleased to make to our guests coming from all around the World.

The wine making is the tradition in Smrikve since 1957…

The wine production is a passion for many Istrian families and my grandfather Mate was a great lower of wine and wine making. The first thing he made in 1957 when he settled in Smrikve was planting the vineyard.

Probably not many Smrikva Bowl readers do know the story how my grandfather agreed to take out a row of vineyard to create the space for the court where today the Smrikva Bowl finals are played.

My father, me and my Uncle continue the wine making tradition in Smrikve…

Several years ago I bought a vineyard close to the vineyard planted by my grandfather and today my father and me are doing our best to get the best from what Malvasia grapes can give.

The first phase of the processing the grapes started today…

We collected the grapes but also separated the juice of the rest to obtain the golden color that usually our Istrian Malvazija (Malmsey) wine has. Now for two days the fermentation will be blocked to allow the wine to start its transformation process cleaner than it is today after the collection.

In Smrikve we produce Istrian Malvazija (Malmsey) and during the Smrikva Bowl we use to give a bottle of wine to every family as a memory to their Smrikva Bowl. Probably one day this bottles might be something special if our kids continue to love tennis game and continue to write the Smrikva Bowl story with their results.

Wine as part of the culture…

In the regions where the wine is produced the wine was always part of the culture of the particular site. Also the wine we produce is part of the Smrikve tradition and this is the reason why we are pleased to give a bottle to every family that come to visit us for the Smrikva Bowl.

There is an old Istrian saying: ”Vino od loze i mliko od koze” and “Kruh je za tilo a vino je za dušu”. The translation from Croatian is difficult because you loose the feel of the language. Goat is the symbol of Istria and the meaning of the first saying would be: ”Wine from the grapevine and milk from the goat” and the meaning of the second would be: “Bread is for the body, wine is for the soul”.

With todays collection as I said we started the process of transforming the grapes into wine for the 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 edition of Malvazija.

The main Istrian wines are: Malvazija, Terran, Refosc and Muscatel.

The glory of the Istrian wine dates back to over 2000 years ago…

For those who are not familiar with Istrian wine I am pleased to remined the reader that Istrian wine was considered one of the best in the Roman Empire, around 20 centuries ago, and was preferred by Livia Drusilla, also known as Iulia Augusta, the wife of the first Roman Emperor Augustus.

Livia Drusilla’s preferred wine was the Istrian wine Pucinum. Livia is considered one of the most influent women in the beginning of the Roman Empire era. It is not know what wine it was because todays wines were brought in Istria mostly by Venitians.

Todays Istrian Malvazija’s story is related with Serenissima… the Venetian Republic

The story of Istrian Malvazija, cultivated in Istria since the end of the 16th century, is fascinating and it relates to the Venetians.

At the beginning of the 15th century the Venetians occupied Peloponnesus in Greece. In the Peloponnesus region there is a town Monemvassia, also named Malvasia. From this town the Venetians started to import the wine into Venice and the other areas controlled by the Venetian Republic.

This wine was so successful and became so famous all over Europe that Venetians decided to plant huge vineyards on the biggest Greek island, Crete.

Between the 16th and 18th century Malvasia become the most important wine in Europe. In 1570 the Turks conquered Crete and Venetians decided to plant Malvasia vineyards in other areas that had friendly relations with Venice which, at that time, also included Istria.

In end Malvasia is in Istria since the above mentioned period while it is not known the sort of the wine that was preferred by the wife of the Emperor Augustus, Livia Drusilla – Julia Augusta.

Giacomo Casanova in his diary talks about another Istrian sort and another great wine…

Giacomo Casanova visited Vrsar several times and in his diary he describes a good wine Refosc and nice women… That Refosc could be Terran too because if you look at the grapes you will hardly note the difference and today Refosc is mostly cultivated in the Slovenian part of Istria while in other areas the dominant sort is Malvasia.

Another excellent wine can be found around Momjan area made of Muscatel sort.

On Istria from Smrikve you can learn much more…

To learn more about Istrian gastronomy and wine please visit the E-book about Istrian cultural heritage on www.smrikve.com/istria/ named “Istria from Smrikve” or join Discover Istria from Smrikve group on Linked In.

The grapes are very nice this year… and the wine should be extraordinary again…

From today… the most important part of wine transformation process starts ;)… and at the beginning of November we will make the first quality level tasting check :)…

Regional Master of “Istria and Northern Adriatic” was held this week end at Tennis Klub Kvarner in Rijeka…

Th event represented the Regional conclusion of a series of nine under 10 tournaments held in the Region… the series of nine tournaments started in Spring and ended the early summer…

The possibility to play the Master was given to 16 boys and girls counting their best results in four tournaments…

The players were competing on the Regional Master to get the possibility to qualify for the National Master…

Tara (9 years old player) and Stefan (7 years old player) both qualified to play the Regional Master of “Istria and Northern Adriatic” by taking into account the four best tournaments results…

At the end of the long tennis day… Stefan was able to win the 1st place in the Bronze Group, while Tara was able to qualify for the National Master by winning the Regional Master obtaining the first place in the Golden Group…

Daria Solovyeva - Dasha is visiting Smrikve after her first ITF title conquered in Macedonia - Jug Open 2015 :)... and also Miro arrived from China with his four new students :D...

Daria Solovyeva – Dasha spend many hours training and developing at “La Bottega” di Smrikve… and last week she crowned herself with her first ITF title at the tournament held in Macedonia… and few days ago she reached the finals at another ITF tournament held also in Macedonia… :)

There were several strong Smrikva Bowl girls I recognized in girls Main Draw at Jug Open 2015: Kristina Miletic (finals), Mihaela Lorena Marculescu (semifinals), Giualia Peoni (quarterfinals), Benedetta Ivaldi (quarterfinals), Betina Tokac (2nd round), Maria Elenova (2nd round)…

This is Dasha’s first ITF title… and with Kristina Miletic she won also in doubles ;)…

… it is a great pleasure to see her in Smrikve again… and to enjoy her development level on the court…

… Dasha had opportunity to meet four new friends from China… and to see Miro :)

… a nice tennis morning…

with developing talents ;)…

a real pleasure to see…
