Today we finished to collect grapes and started the 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 - SMRIKVE Malvazija wine production
We just collected grapes and started 2016 Smrikve wine production… the wine collection of limited 160-200 bottles will be made as per tradition… and it will be donated to the families participating the 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 edition…
As per tradition we will do our best to make good wine…

Smrikve Malvazija is thanks to the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors spread in 72 countries and all the continents. Last year we created a limited collection of 160 bottles and never above 200 bottles… it is always a gift of our family to the Smrikva Bowl families and to our friends.

Wine and gastronomy are part of a culture and wine bottle that we give to every Smrikva Bowl family is part of our cultural gift that every year we are pleased to make to our guests coming from all around the World.
The wine making is the tradition in Smrikve since 1957…
The wine production is a passion for many Istrian families and my grandfather Mate was a great lower of wine and wine making. The first thing he made in 1957 when he settled in Smrikve was planting the vineyard.

Probably not many Smrikva Bowl readers do know the story how my grandfather agreed to take out a row of vineyard to create the space for the court where today the Smrikva Bowl finals are played.
My father, me and my Uncle continue the wine making tradition in Smrikve…

Several years ago I bought a vineyard close to the vineyard planted by my grandfather and today my father and me are doing our best to get the best from what Malvasia grapes can give.
The first phase of the processing the grapes started today…

We collected the grapes but also separated the juice of the rest to obtain the golden color that usually our Istrian Malvazija (Malmsey) wine has. Now for two days the fermentation will be blocked to allow the wine to start its transformation process cleaner than it is today after the collection.
In Smrikve we produce Istrian Malvazija (Malmsey) and during the Smrikva Bowl we use to give a bottle of wine to every family as a memory to their Smrikva Bowl. Probably one day this bottles might be something special if our kids continue to love tennis game and continue to write the Smrikva Bowl story with their results.

Wine as part of the culture…
In the regions where the wine is produced the wine was always part of the culture of the particular site. Also the wine we produce is part of the Smrikve tradition and this is the reason why we are pleased to give a bottle to every family that come to visit us for the Smrikva Bowl.

There is an old Istrian saying: ”Vino od loze i mliko od koze” and “Kruh je za tilo a vino je za dušu”. The translation from Croatian is difficult because you loose the feel of the language. Goat is the symbol of Istria and the meaning of the first saying would be: ”Wine from the grapevine and milk from the goat” and the meaning of the second would be: “Bread is for the body, wine is for the soul”.

With todays collection as I said we started the process of transforming the grapes into wine for the 21st Smrikva Bowl 2016 edition of Malvazija.
The main Istrian wines are: Malvazija, Terran, Refosc and Muscatel.
The glory of the Istrian wine dates back to over 2000 years ago…

For those who are not familiar with Istrian wine I am pleased to remined the reader that Istrian wine was considered one of the best in the Roman Empire, around 20 centuries ago, and was preferred by Livia Drusilla, also known as Iulia Augusta, the wife of the first Roman Emperor Augustus.
Livia Drusilla’s preferred wine was the Istrian wine Pucinum. Livia is considered one of the most influent women in the beginning of the Roman Empire era. It is not know what wine it was because todays wines were brought in Istria mostly by Venitians.
Todays Istrian Malvazija’s story is related with Serenissima… the Venetian Republic

The story of Istrian Malvazija, cultivated in Istria since the end of the 16th century, is fascinating and it relates to the Venetians.
At the beginning of the 15th century the Venetians occupied Peloponnesus in Greece. In the Peloponnesus region there is a town Monemvassia, also named Malvasia. From this town the Venetians started to import the wine into Venice and the other areas controlled by the Venetian Republic.
This wine was so successful and became so famous all over Europe that Venetians decided to plant huge vineyards on the biggest Greek island, Crete.

Between the 16th and 18th century Malvasia become the most important wine in Europe. In 1570 the Turks conquered Crete and Venetians decided to plant Malvasia vineyards in other areas that had friendly relations with Venice which, at that time, also included Istria.

In end Malvasia is in Istria since the above mentioned period while it is not known the sort of the wine that was preferred by the wife of the Emperor Augustus, Livia Drusilla – Julia Augusta.
Giacomo Casanova in his diary talks about another Istrian sort and another great wine…

Giacomo Casanova visited Vrsar several times and in his diary he describes a good wine Refosc and nice women… That Refosc could be Terran too because if you look at the grapes you will hardly note the difference and today Refosc is mostly cultivated in the Slovenian part of Istria while in other areas the dominant sort is Malvasia.

Another excellent wine can be found around Momjan area made of Muscatel sort.
On Istria from Smrikve you can learn much more…

The grapes are very nice this year… and the wine should be extraordinary again…
From today… the most important part of wine transformation process starts ;)… and at the beginning of November we will make the first quality level tasting check :)…

Duje AJDUKOVIC, 16th Smrikva Bowl 2011 winner, claim European 14&U title
Duje Ajdukovic, 16th Smrikva Bowl 2011 winner, has been crowned the new European 14 & Under Champion as a week of high-quality tennis draws to a close at TK Slavia Pilsen (CZE).
I am pleased to share parts of tenniseurope.org article in the following:
“Eighth seeded Ajdukovic scored a third consecutive upset win to complete his path to the boys’ title. Having upset #2 seed Adrian Andreev (BUL) and #5 Wojciech Marek (POL) in his previous two matches, the Croatian withstood a second set fightback from #4 Filip Jianu of Romania before completing a 6-4 2-6 6-2 win.
Ajdukovic has been in impressive form in recent weeks, reaching the quarterfinals of the 16 & Under Avvenire event in Milan and leading his team to the final of the 14 & Under European Summer Cups event. The win is just his second title of the season though, having earlier triumphed at the Category 2 Mladost Grill Open in Zagreb. He becomes the first Croatian boy to win the title since Mario Ancic in 1998.
Saturday’s doubles final saw Czech team Jiri Lehecka & Andrew Paulson please the home crowd in Pilsen with a 6-0 6-4 win over the top seeded Russians Matvey Minin & Timofey Skatov.
The four singles finalists – Swiatek, Pachkaleva, Ajdukovic and Marek, automatically qualify to take part in the season-ending Tennis Europe Junior Masters in Reggio Calabria, Italy, in October.”
Other Smrikva Bowl players top results in the Main Draw are: Nicolas ALVAREZ VARONA (semifinals) and Mihailo POPOVIC (quarterfinals)… in the girls Draw Iva ZELIC reached the quarterfinals…

Dominic THIEM is in the winner, Borna CORIC reached the quarterfinals and Djere LASLO was in the Main Draw of 26th KONZUM Croatia OPEN 2015
Umag is a very special place during the week of July when the Croatia Open – ATP tournament is played at Stella Maris tennis centre…

Mr. Slavko Rasberger, the former tournament director, was able to create with sponsors and an army of volonteers one of the most beautiful public sport events in Istria and Croatia, confirmed also by numerous ATP excellence awards…
… over the last years tournament director Mr. Vanja Bozickovic did his best in following the path laid down by Mr. Rasberger starting from the top Croatian players that almost all were present over the last years editions…
… and from this year the Tournament has a new leadership with Mr. Lawrence Frankopan, StarWing Sports players management agency founder…
It is not easy to attract the top World players but as NIKE, one of the new tournament sponsors moto say… there is no better way then JUST DO IT :)…
The ATP tournament in UMAG was organized for the first time in 1990… and a lot of best World players played in Umag… Goran Ivanisevic, Carlos Moya, Ivan Ljubicic, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Nikolaj Davidenko, David Ferrer, Guillermo Canas, Goran Prpic, Thomas Muster, Gustavo Kuerten, Marcelo Rios, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and many others…
In 2007, Carlos Moya won his fifth Umag title. I was there that night and it was very nice for me to see Jofre Porta with Carlos Moya in Umag. Jofre Porta was Carlos Moya trainer since he was a kid… and he also trained Rafael Nadal from time tot ime… Jofre was in Smrikve in 2006 with Virginia Pena ranked third on 11th Smrikva Bowl 2006 and was the winner of 12th Smrikva Bowl 2007…
I was so happy to see in the Main Draws of single and double five Smrikva Bowl players: Dominic THIEM, Borna CORIC, Djere LASLO , Marin DRAGANJA and Dino MARCAN…
Walking around the tennis center allow you to see familiar faces :)… and the first day in UMAG on training courts we met Dominic Thiem, 8th Smrikva Bowl 2003 winner… I did not see him since 2003… it was a little kid when he left Smrikve and today is one of the most prominent World tennis players…
Tara was so happy to get her cap signed…
… he was training that day with Andrey RUBLEV… anther rising star… a very humble boy who signed with smile Tara and Stefo’s papers too…
Dominic THIEM is the first former Smrikva Bowl player to win an ATP tournament… and this week is with Borna CORIC, another Smrikva Bowl player, and one of the most prominent players in the World… and FOGNINI… they were both candidates to the tournaments final and Dominic in end crowned himself the winner of the 26th annual…

It was a pleasure to see Laslo playing 10 years after his Smrikva Bowl… and to see again his father that did not change at all… the same kindness and smile as he first entered Konoba when Laslo was only 8 years old… and in 2003 Laslo played with Dominic Thiem :)…
… and another surprise was to meet Drazen Prcic, a sport journalist and author of various books, among which I am pleased to recall the book Wild Card, which is part of the Smrikva Bowl Library… Drazen is friend of friends :)…
… Gael Monfils, donated this year to the Smrikva Bowl Lucky Draw his signed t-shirt, together with Borna Coric, Ana Ivanovic, Katie Swan and Dominic Thiem… and to see him play is simply fun and joy… and we had pleasure to see him playing double with his friend who tried his best… but the opponents were just a little bit better…
… every year more and more Smrikva kids growing up into stars makes my heart feel :) and proud of them doing their best to write one day their names on the stars reserved to the tennis players…
It is a very successful edition and true bravo to all the staff, players and visitors who are making this event one of the most beautiful public events in Istria and Croatia…
