1st Smrikva Bowl Tennis Talents Family Week 2015 started... the Sensation and Hidden Force Day...

Yesterday morning we started with the first Smrikva Bowl Tennis Talents Family Week… the arrival of the first players started more then a week ago… with arrival of Verdhan Karkal and his family from India… followed by the arrival of June Bjork and her father from Sweden…

On Saturday… a day before the program started… the majority of the group members reached us… Tadej Mihajlovic with his grandfather and aunt from Belgrade… Andjela Skrobonja with her mother and sister from Sombor… Ivan and Matej Sabanov from Osijek… and Luca Appino from Turin in Italy…

During the first day… also Leah Gonzales Edwards with her father joined us immediately after landing to Pula… :)

Saturday evening we started with a pizza dinner in our Konoba… and I am pleased to share just few pictures of the first knowledge sharing day…

Early in the morning with Luca… the final fine tuning for the day was made…

… and after breakfast… we started to go on the courts and make a little assessment of each player…

… here we are… the 1st SMRIKVA BOWL TENNIS TALENTS FAMILY WEEK 2015 Group… :)

the sharing knowledge week is based on two key elements… the TENNIS TALENTS Formula and Method… and learning about managing matches and the hidden force in tennis…

the on court day start at 8:30 AM… and finish after 8:30 PM in the evening… it is all about development…

and the first day was dedicated to exploring the first pillar of the tennis talents formula… dedicated to sensations… a very broad subject… and after the morning assessment… classroom introduction of the formula – method… and the launch break…

… we dedicated the afternoon in exploring the sensation elements…

… in all the learning we go through various key habits for any sportsmen… which start with warm up… and ends up with stretching and cooling down…

… after dinner we all returned to the classroom… and we’ve got a help from Yoda to introduce some of the elements to be shared over the week and related with Momentum and hidden force in tennis ;)…

Today the group will start exploring the other relevant pillars of the Tennis Talent Method… :)

Smrikva Bowl Library story and the spring... JRL once said... "books are the bees which carry the quickening pollen from one to another mind..." ;)

20th Smrikva Bowl 2015 generation will be selected in less than 10 days… and… while few weeks ago I recalled the story of circle of life that is linked to our little Ambassadors and the old olive trees we plant…

… today I would be pleased to recall another story that is linked to the books and the title of today… linked to the books but also to our players who bring them to their Smrikva Bowl… :)

…it is the story of heritage… but as written in the title… it is again a story related to the spring via pollen … but this time is a kind of mind pollen… ;)…

James Russell Lowell compared books to the bees and I like it… “books are the bees which carry the quickening pollen from one to another mind…”

In 2009 we started the building of the Smrikva Bowl Library… and since than each Smrikva Bowl player is requested to bring with him a cultural book that will remember his or her stay in Smrikve and will represent part of the culture to be shared with other Smrikve friends…

Nowadays Smrikva Bowl Library consists of over 590 books from 53 countries… :)

…Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors are spread in 64 countries and all the continents… and historically their task was to help us in our search of talented kids in their countries of origin and invite them to play the Smrikva Bowl but from 26th of March 2009… since Istria from Smrikve was put on line… they are also ISTRIA Cultural Ambassadors’ seeds.

The old olive tree Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors plant every year is a symbol of friendship and intergenerational responsibility and Smrikva Bowl’s idea of children, sport, music and culture that are able to pass all frontiers are incorporated in the creation of the Smrikva Bowl Library too…

I used to write in my first book on European Union and Cosmopolitan Democracy that we are those who represent the current civilization…

I find it as an important concept. Today people live an average of about 80 years. What we call civilization is mostly made up of the human knowledge we have accumulated till today, which our institutions in part are able to pass onto future generations… sometimes this is not easy at all…

The books represent the greatest human memory that can help us understand what we see combined with cumulated personal experience of our daily lives. But given the fragility of the circle of life it is very easy for people to ignore these facts and lose sight of our human knowledge. It takes just a few generations to lose that great heritage…

We have gotten used to rapid technological progress, but social and civil progress is slower… more complex. Humans learn throughout the whole lifetime, from books… schools, but mostly from personal experiences…

Smrikva Bowl mission is to develop and spread cosmopolitan values. Love, friendship and empathy are cosmopolitan values per excellence for people and humanity…

Thanks in advance to all the 20th Smrikva Bowl players who will help this year with their visit to Smrikve to build another piece of the Smrikva Bowl World library :)

… after tennis… again… all together for the dinner around the table… it was the “cavapcici” dinner :)

… and new friendship started between players who met already on International tournaments over the past…

… and below is the prize for Masha and Oksana for reaching the finals in doubles in UMAG on the tournament they played… a lot of Smrikva kids were in Umag and two of them will be playing in the finals today: Noa KRZNARIC and Stefan POPOVIC

Karlo SUEVICH, 15th Smrikva Bowl 2000 runner up, spent few days in Smrikva playing with Karlo KAJIN and they are both preparing to play ITF Grade 1 tournament in Umag… this will be the second ITF tournament for Karlo SUEVICHwho this year turn 15 years old…

Also Matej and Ivan SABANOV moved to Pula this week… and early in the morning the warm up start…

for the 43rd edition of Istarska RIVIJERA 2015… tournament they play… with them also brother of 6th Smrikva Bowl 2001 winner visited Smrikve… Tomislav DRAGANJA and his coach…

Yesterday afternoon… Masha and Oksana had pleasure to play for points with Ivan and Matej

It was a super smiling and funny experience that all four players enjoyed…

and after many points played… and school made by girls via skype… the evening finished with Pizza in Konoba all together :)

… as I wrote in my last article… the days are longer… asparagus started to wake up and grow… and the spring is knocking on Istrian doors… and every year during spring Smrikve starts to receive visit from its Seeds of the Legends spread around the World :)

Matej and Ivan SABANOV, 7th Smrikva Bowl 2002 semifinalist, joined us for dinner tonight :)

It was a nice surprise to see Ivan and Matej this afternoon in Smrikve…

It is the spring time… and spring is the time of Istrian Riviera…

This week 2nd in the row Istrian Riviera Futures started in Porec… and I expected to see them next week during Pula’s Future but their visit was a nice anticipation and surprise :)

… it was a nice surprise for Masha and Oksana too to meet them… and we had dinner all together… and I hope during this weekend we will be able to arrange some time on the court all together too ;)…

… as I wrote in my last article… the days are longer… asparagus started to wake up and grow… and the spring is knocking on Istrian doors… and every year during spring Smrikve starts to receive visit from its Seeds of the Legends spread around the World :)

They will all, except Conor who is still too little, play the ETA under 12 tournament in UMAG

…with Masha, Oksana, Pat and Conor we all spent a lovely dinner evening at Konoba :)

Like old friends sharing story nearby the fireplace ;)…

A big surprise to Patrick and Conor was a 9 kg Octopus they saw… it was huge… especially to Conor…

… the time run fast in a good company… and Pat and Conor with father John at 9:30 PM returned to UMAG

… while Masha and Oksana at 8 AM were already practicing on the courts… … meeting both of them for the first time with strong Istrian northern wind named “Bura”… a lot of spin is required to play with this extreme condition… but from tomorrow the wind should calm down…

Patrick Brady meet with Maria Timofeeva and Oksana Selekhmeteva at AURAY few weeks ago… and when Patrick ring on my door… we went nearby the courts and he recognized both of them…

Patrick, although only 10 years old, qualified for the Main Draw in Auray… while Oksana played the semifinals with Smrikva Bowl runner up Kylie Bilchev and Masha reached third round because of a back injury during the match and she withdraw from the single… in doubles Masha and Oksana were this year Champions in Auray…

Spring is at the door... nature awakens... and soon the 20th Smrikva Bowl 2015 tennis talents generation will be known... :)

In 2005, for the 10th Smrikva Bowl anniversary, we started a tradition of planting an Olive tree…

… in many countries the olive tree is a symbol of peace… while the age of the Smrikva Bowl olive tree is a symbol of intergenerational responsibility…

… every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to try to understand and to learn to preserve all that each of us is born with…

… the spring moment when nature wakes up… is also the moment when the new Smrikva Bowl generation will be identified… and to me it is a nice moment to recall the story of the circle of life… :)

Smrikve, March 2008

AMBASSADORSOLD OLIVE TREE AND THE CIRCLE OF LIFE

The Lion King cartoon is an artwork and most of the life messages one can find in it are in line with the Smrikva Bowl. They are in line with the message of the Ambassadors’ Olive Tree; they are in line with the values of friendship and love; they are in line with empathy. Love, friendship and empathy are all Cosmopolitan values per excellence, as far as people and humanity are concerned.

The relationship between Mufasa, Sarabi and Simba reminds me of both: parents and family love, but also about the intergenerational responsibility.

Timon, Pumbaa and Simba relationship reminds me about love between friends. Pumbaa also make me think about empathy, intuition and loyalty. The relationship between Simba and Nola reminds me again about the importance of love. Rafiki, the wise old baboo, with his many centuries old tree reminds me about the importance of knowledge and experience of the older.

There are many other particular moments that every person on its own, based on his or her own life experience, discover by watching these artworks.

You might be interested to know that most of the characters’s names in this cartoon have a particular meaning in Swahili language: Simba means “lion”; Nala means “gift”, and love is for me one of the greatest gifts that people can receive and give during their life; Sarabi means “mirage”; Pumbaa means “dull-witted” or “stunned”; and Rafiki means “friend” :). These names with their meanings make me think of the American Indians and the way they used to give the names to their people.

Every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to understand and to learn, to preserve all that each of us is born with.

When Mufasa was explaining to Simba that is not easy to be the King… a good King should know that everything around us lives in a delicate equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it.

The intergenerational responsibility alone will allow future generations to enjoy the beauty of life, the sunsets and the seasons of the earth. Enjoy the circle of life.

“The future is always in a minority. Yet the history of the future is more important than the history of the past. It is for the old to remember the past. It is for the young to build the world of tomorrow…”

Everything around us lives in a delicate equilibrium and with intelligence we should try to understand it and respect it. It is true that every generation face new challenges but there are many examples in the past how the old generations managed and solved particular problems and this is why knowledge, human curiosity and will to learn are important.

Ljubav ne zahtjeva da dvoje ljudi gledaju jedno u drugo, već da zajedno gledaju u istom pravcu.

Today… in many countries around the World the LOVe Day is celebrated… and I like to dedicate every year few words to this particular FORCE :)…

Smrikva Bowl mission has always been dedicated towards spreading the cosmopolitan values… and LOVe, friendship and empathy are among those values per excellence…

… today is still hard to imagine what kind of beauty the Smrikva Bowl seeds around the World will be able to create…

… they are growing… like growing seeds of the tennis of tomorrow.. spread in 64 countries and all the continents…

The title of today article… “Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.”… is borrowed from a quote of Antonine de Saint- Exupéry… the author of the Little Prince book… and is dedicated to THE FORCE… we like to name “LOVe”… and I like to think of it as… the ”eVOLve”… :)

… very powerful force…

THE LITTLE PRINCE…by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry… is a very special book that every person at different age read differently.

It is a book that last over time and was likely the last love gift Antoine de Saint-Exupéry made to his wife Consuelo de Saint-Exupéry.

Over time this book was translated into many different languages thus become a love gift for many generations around the world.

It is a children’s book written for the older… and I like many parts of it… especially the description that Antoine make of the adult people… the description of the moment when the rose was born… the importance of the right orders on the King’s planet… “you never know” statement… the meeting with the wise fox… the smiling stars and many other parts…

… and just one more thing… Only best friends, when they trust each other, do share their deep knowledge… and once The Little Prince and the fox created such a special relationship the fox shared a secret with him…

… “One only understands the things that one tames,” said the fox…

… “What must I do, to tame you?” asked the little prince.

“You must be very patient,” replied the fox. “First you will sit down at a little distance from me – like that – in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings. But you will sit a little closer to me, every day…”

… and when Little Prince come back to say goodbye the fox shared a little secret with him…

… “Goodbye,” said the fox. “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

“What is essential is invisible to the eye,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

“It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important.”

… “… You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose…”

“I am responsible for my rose,” the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry believed in the title of today’s article that: “Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction”…

…whatever he thought with that say… I like it… ;)

p.s. “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” – Albert Einstein

Marin DRAGANJA, 6th Smrikva Bowl 2001 winner, with Henri Kontinen, won PBZ Zagreb Indoors 2015 Doubles

Marin DRAGANJA, 6th Smrikva Bowl 2001 winner, currently ranked #29 ATP in doubles, won 2015 PBZ Zagreb Indoors Doubles with Henri Kontinen…

From PBZ Zagreb indoors website I am pleased to share the following for those who understand Croatian…

In summary, this is second title for both Marin and Henri… but the first for both playing together… although they played together three finals: Basel, Metz and Zagreb:

Katie Swan: Britain's new tennis Queen by telegraph.co.uk

Today Katie Swan, 14th Smrikva Bowl 2009 player, played the finals of the junior Australian Open and I am pleased to share an article published by The Telegraph explaining a bit Katie’s casual passion development for tennis…

On 7th of July 2009 I wrote a short note recalling the 14th Smrikva Bowl annual and in relation with Katie in my notes I found… “Katie Swan is very British in her attitude and game… very polite but she never give up… sometimes running without shoes even if it is raining thus reminded me the Ashley’s freedom style… and sometimes like a Swan in a ballet dance concentrate at every move and every stroke… “

Swan 15, set on the road to stardom by chance after taking tennis lessons on family holiday

By Victoria Ward, 30th of January 2015

It was a chance encounter with a former international tennis player during a family holiday to Portugal that set Katie Swan on the road to success.

The 15-year-old has become Britain’s brightest and youngest hopeful after reaching the Australian Open junior final, and has been catapulted into the spotlight in the process.

But her ability might never have been nurtured were it not for a fortuitous decision to take tennis lessons whilst on holiday in Portugal when she was just seven.

The lessons were intended to be little more than a fun way to pass the time in the sunshine. As it happened, her teacher had once played for Portugal and told her parents, Nicki and Richard, that she showed real talent.

Mrs Swan has said: “She had a few lessons and (the teacher) used to play for Portugal, and he told us, ‘She’s going to be a professional tennis player.’

“(I said) ‘Oh, that’s hilarious’. He said, ‘I promise you.’ We gave her proper lessons, and it went from there.”

On the family’s return to Abbots Leigh, Bristol, they booked her regular tennis lessons with Rob Hawkins, junior programme manager and head coach at the David Lloyd club.

Mr Hawkins ended up coaching Swan from the age of seven to 11, watching her develop into a promising player on the international circuit.

Swan moved to Wichita, Kansas, two years ago due to her father’s job in the oil industry, but has continued to flourish thanks to her natural ability and quiet determination.

Mr Hawkins told The Telegraph: “Katie came in having had a go at tennis in Portugal and started off playing a steady once or twice a week to begin with.

“Very quickly it was obvious that she was progressing extremely well and we increased her time on the court gradually.

“She was always keen to play and always keen to listen. She had very good concentration and wanted to learn how to do things properly- in a way, the perfect person to teach.”

Mr Hawkins brought Swan to the attention of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) when she was eight and as a result, she began to receive LTA support and funding.

She won her first international tournament in Croatia, the prestigious Smrikve Bowl event for 10-year-olds, and went on to win an Under 10s international title.

She was a member of the four-strong UK squad, coached by Judy Murray, that triumphed in last year’s Maureen Connolly Cup, an annual Under-18s competition against the US.

Swan now plays tennis six days a week, for two or three hours a day. But her success has in part been attributed to her parents’ insistence that she have a normal, rounded childhood.

They have always been keen that she remain in school, unlike many young tennis professionals who are home schooled, and have a range of interests outside of tennis.

She was head girl at Bristol prep The Downs School and was a keen hockey player, representing Avon and her school when they qualified for the Under-13 national finals.

She briefly attended the independent Bristol Grammar School before the family relocated to Kansas, where she remains in school, taking online classes since August.

Mrs Swan said recently: “She’s one of the very few players on the competitive circuit who is still in school, and we’re working to keep it like that.

“We really like her having what we think is a balanced lifestyle. It keeps her grounded. We like the structure of school. Katie went to homecoming, went to Sadie Hawkins (a traditional US school dance).

“I don’t know realistically if she can graduate, that might get too difficult. But in the here and now, she’s 15 and achieving this along with a completely normal lifestyle while she’s here in Wichita.”

Swan is currently on tour with LTA coach Julien Picot but when at home, trains with Collin Foster, Wichita State women’s coach, and Rex Coad, head professional at Wichita Country Club.

Mr Coad has described her as “a pretty unique young lady” who combines extraordinary physical ability with mental strength.

Answering questions about herself on Ask.fm last year, Swan said her favourite subject was Spanish and described her life in five words: “Family, friends, tennis, traveling, food”

Although she has developed an American accent, she insisted this week: “I’m definitely British, even though I don’t sound it.

“I’m still with the LTA and I’m not doing anything for the USTA (United States Tennis Association).

“My British friends think I sound fully American and my American friends think I still sound English. It’s funny, they both give me stick about my accent.”

Swan made he made her junior debut at Wimbledon last year but lost in the first round to Romania’s Ioana Rosca.

The Australian Open is only her third Grand Slam but on Saturday, all hopes will be on her as she aims to become the first British winner since Annabel Croft triumphed there in 1984.
