2015 Smrikve and Smrikva Bowl Greetings letter... Sve najljepše... Auguri...
Dear Smrikve and Smrikva Bowl friends,
It is greetings time… time to stay with our dear… and it is time to recall moments of the year…
… for years I continued to believe that Smrikva Bowl kids and families have the opportunity to write life stories that will inspire by example generations to come…
… and year after year is becoming more easy to foresee that they will collect the most prestigious trophies of the tennis game… and more than one will write the name on the stars reserved to great tennis names of tomorrow… and in decade or two children born today may call some of them the “legend”…
In each sunrise hidden may be Smrikva Bowl kids and families highest aspirations… many of us may never reach our initial dreams, but we can all believe in dreams and do our best to follow where they lead… enjoying the journay… and never forgetting that for people who dream with us we are the sunshine the way we are…
For sure it takes courage and strong will to act upon our dreams… and for many people the election of a dream may come from the family… but not only… all around is inspiring to children…
Preparations for the 20th Smrikva Bowl 2015 edition are on going in Smrikve and tennis talents from over 30 countries already presented their candidacy… but there is a newborn idea dedicated to past Smrikva Bowl players and families and coaches that I am pleased to share… it is scheduled for 18th – 25th of April and named – Smrikva Bowl Family Vacation Week…
This autumn Luca Appino – Golden Honorary Smrikva Bowl Member… Tennis Talents Founder… inspiring friend… credited for signing contracts with players such as Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters, Dinara Safina… many of them discovered when they were far away from becoming #1 in tennis… visited Smrikve, and as we did many times, we kept talking for hours about many past Smrikva Bowl tennis talents, many names and families we know, many children we believe in…
We decided to try to organize an inspiring week suitable for eight former Smrikva Bowl players with families and coaches who are still among the best players of their generation and still dream tennis the way they dream it when participating Smrikva Bowl…
If you believe that this spring vacation could be of your family interest feel free to write me…
Best wishes with hope to see you in Smrikve during 2015,
Mio
Dragi prijatelji i poznanici Smrikvi i Smrikva Bowl-a,
Sve najljepše u 2015.godini i doviđenja u Smrikvama :)
Mimi
Quest’autunno Luca Appino – Golden Honorary Smrikva Bowl Member…
Mio

Chair and Lines Umpires Educational Course was held this week end at Smrikve by Croatian Tennis Umpires Registry Members: Mila Knežević and Mladen Tomšić
Over the last weekend we organized in Smrikve the Chair and Lines Umpire Course mainly for Smrikva Bowl Staff Members…
Croatian Tennis Umpires Registry Members Mila Knezevic and Mladen Tomsic run the Course…
There were 12 Smrikva Bowl Staff Members from Pula and 3 external guests who attended the course from Opatija and Zagreb…
Mila Knezevic and Mladen Tomsic have both very long on-court Umpire experience… and they both have long experience in training Chair and Lines Umpires in Croatia…
This was an opportunity for Smrikva Bowl Staff Members to update their knowledge and learn more from the long experience of Mila and Mladen…
The key objective was to go through the rules and procedures that are important to assure high quality match conditions on the court…
The gathering started on Friday… 28th of November… and that first day was dedicated to ITF Rules of Tennis…
We went through all the rules… one by one… and through a large number of case studies…
I am pleased to recall the examined Rules by using few course pictures just for the first day table of contents of the gathering:
Rule 1: The Court
Rule 2: Permanent Fixture
Rule 3: The Ball
Rule 4: The Racket
Rule 5: Score in a Game
Rule 6: Score in a Set
Rule 7: Score in a Match
Rule 8: Server & Receiver
Rule 9: Choice of Ends & Service
Rule 10: Change of Ends
Rule 11: Ball in Play
Rule 12: Ball touches a Line
Rule 13: Ball Touches a Permanent Fixture
Rule 14: Order of Service
Rule 15: Order of Receiving in Doubles
Rule 16: The Service
Rule 17: Serving
Rule 18: Foot Fault
Rule 19: Service Fault
Rule 20: Second Service
Rule 21: When to Serve & Receive
Rule 22: The Let During a Service
Rule 23: The Let
Rule 24: Player Loses Point
Rule 25: A Good Return
Rule 26: Hinderance
Rule 27: Correcting Errors
Rule 28: Role of Court Officials
Rule 29: Continuous Play
Rule 30: Coaching
Rule 31: Player Analysis Technology
We’ve also gone through the wheelchair tennis Rules and various appendixes: Appendix I: The Ball, Classification of Court Surface Pace; Appendix II: The Racket; Appendix III: Player Analysis Technology; Appendix IV: Advertising; Appendix V: Alternative Procedures and Scoring Methods; Appendix VI: Role of Court Officials; Appendix VII: 10 and under tennis competition; Appendix VIII: Plan of the Court…
The second day had more focus on Procedures (question of tennis law vs. question of tennis facts)… the Role of Court Officials (Referee, Chair Umpire, Line Umpire)… many practical cases were analyzed… and many real cases managed by Mila and Mladen were discussed…
During the Course both teachers were giving focus on analyzing situations, answering questions, asking questions… and making clear that we understand well the material received before the Course…
… and the third day… Sunday… was the exam day…
… and I am pleased to share that 12 members of the Staff successfully completed the Course…
It was a nice experience…and is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to learn something new…

Last week end the 16th International Tennis Symposium was held at Centro Pavesi in Milan (Italy) promoted by Pro Camp MGM Italia, UISP and GPTCA
I spent this week end at Centro Pavesi in Milan participating the 16th International Tennis Symposium… as per tradition the Symposium gathered many interesting speakers and it was again an opportunity to learn something new…
This year the event was promoted by Pro CAMP MGMG Italia in collaboration with Il TENIS ITALIANO Magazine and sponsored by UISP (Unione Italiana Sport per tutti) and GPTCA (Global Professional Tennis Coach Association)…
GPTCA is a quite a new fast growing tennis association of Profesional Coaches – certified by ATP – and chaired by Alberto CASTELLANI… Alberto CASTELLANI was also this year the main facilitator of the event because as last year also this year the Symposium was combined with GPTCA Certification Course…
After the welcome word of the Symposium president Mr. Massimo Rossi over the week end many speakers shared their experience with the group: Alberto CASTELLANI, Dragos Madalin LUSCAN, Alessandra PARRONI, Eduardo Luis SILVA, Fulvio CONSOLI, Patricio REMONDEGUI, Manuela BENZI, Stefano TAMORRI, Guglielmo SORCI, Fabrizio CALDARONE, Rainer SHUETTLER, Gorio MANDOZZI, Renato PALMA, Tiziano GAMBA…
The main theme was “The Personal Coaching from competition of our tennis schools to high level: the steps that tennis school have to observe”… overall the mental part had a big impact on this year event…
The first topic presented was named “Creativity and fantasy as basis elements of motivation: difference between creative and non-creative trainings”… and was presented by Alberto CASTELLANI
As per tradition, Alberto was extraordinary to present the topic… no words were required to be creative ;)… Alberto used the music support and it is something we do for years at “La Bottega” di Smrikve… and his lessons remind me our tennis talents who join as at Smrikve for specific fine tuning weeks… it was a nice lesson…
The following topic was presented by Dragos Madalin LUSCAN… I had pleasure to meet him last year in relation with TRX opportunities… and also this time the topic shared was very interesting…
The title of the topic was “Healthy and myofascial release”… and the most interesting part was that most of the exercises you can simple do with a tennis ball…
After Dragos it was the first lesson related with Mental Training and was held by Alessandra PARRONI… the title was “Mindfulness, flow state and excellent performance: which correlation?”… Alessandra is part of Alberto Castellani’s staff and her lesson was a valuable introduction to all the other speakers who dedicated time to similar subject during symposium…
THe following topic was presented by Eduardo Luis SILVA… on PTR Annual forum at Vavassori Academy in September I had the opportunity to learn about his pilot project… and this time I learned a bit more… the title of the lesson was: “Tennis Program for blinds, Italy.”…
Very emotional presentation… and very interesting… giving importance to what also top tennis players have to give importance… developing sensations… and using sounds and other elements which help to reach the excellence… it was very interesting learning story…
After Eduardo… also Fulvio CONSOLI was invited to share his tennis teaching experience… with people having other difficulties…
Patricio REMONDEGUI followed with his presentation and he made some court exercises with the group of students… it was a real pleasure to watch at work the coach who helped Robin KERN in his tennis growth… and Robin played Smrikva Bowl in 2002 … Giulia LAMBIASE is another of his students and Giulia also played Smrikva…
The title of the topic presented by Patricio was: “Professional coaching: fantasy and creativity as basis of trainings for high level players”…
At the end of the first day there was another lesson dedicated to mental part… dedicated to Motor Imagery… the exact title presented was: “Anatomical bases of Motor Imagery and research of praxic Tennis shot: maximum efficacy with minimum effort.”…
There were four speakers: Guiglielmo SORCI… and he started with presenting the lesson…
… continued by… Manuela BENZI and Stefano TAMORRI…
it was very interesting to see what science has to say about it… and at the end Alberto CASTELLANI made practice part on the court…
The second day started with Fabrizio CALDARONE…. title of his lesson was: “Life on tour-views on Tennis industry & player management”…
I had pleasure to listen Fabrizio in the past… and it was another interesting presentation…
Last year Toni NADAL shared his coaching experience… and this year it was Rainer SHUETTLER who shared his playing and coaching experience…. Rainer was #4 ATP player in the World… and currently is dedicating his time to coaching… and the presented case was dedicated to his student Bernakis…
Rainer did not only shared his experience… but he also played tennis… and performed some exercises run by Alberto Castellani… the title of his lessons were: “My professional coaching” and “Training and my job with R. Berankis, Junior World Champion and rising tennis star.”…
Last year uncle Tony NADAL… used few words to describe Rafa… and he used two words humble and simple… and this year Alberto Castellani used similar words to describe Rainer: humble and hard working…
It was very nice life and growing story Rainer shared about his relation with his coach…
After Rainer… a big surprise was Gorio MANDOZZI…
Gorio showed great knowledge of anathomy and body in general… title of his lesson was: “Bio-mechanics evolution to excel in sport performance”…
but his knowledge is broad and touch various fields… Osteopathic Tecniques, Physiotherapy, Posturology, Kinesiology, Matabolic Food… and he simply showed the excellence that can be reached by a Physiotherapeut if he loves and dedicate with passion to this subject…
The last two lessons were dedicated to Mental part again…
The first one was held by Renato PALMA with title… “The easy happiness”…
The second one, and the last one of this year symposiium, was held by Tiziano GAMBA with title… “Interventions on emotional interferences which interpose with an excellent performance”…
It was another Symposium “good year”… :)
Alberto CASTELLANI, a part of being a coach, is a great fun of culture, art and history thus his presentation are usually coloured with deep notes related with culture that I always enjoy…
… and he is, among other, the President of the ATP Global Professional Tennis Coach Association… and GPTCA can count on huge network of coaches around the World therfore the subjects elected to be shared are always of interest…

Charlotte Owensby, 17th Smrikva Bowl 2012 quarterfinalist, won 17th annual "Little Mo" Nationals 2014 played in Austin - Texas
Charlotte Owensby confirmed with her fifth straight “Little Mo” Nationals title to be one of the most talented US players in her age group… and probably one of the top World players in her age group…
I just learned from Carol Weyman, “Little Mo” Tournament Director, that they just completed the 17th annual “Little Mo” Nationals in Austin, Texas.
Charlotte Owensby won a record 5th straight Nationals title. She won the 8’s as a 7 year old and then won 8’s the next year, 9’s, 10’s and now 11’s. Amazing feat! I learned Charlotte was actually never challenged until her final match against her biggest rival Bridget Stammel. They played each other for the last three finals… and this time they split sets but in end Charlotte did great in momentum management of the match.

It is a world tennis news: "17-Year-Old Borna Coric Notches First Top 3 Win in Basel"... in the quarterfinals was able to win Rafael Nadal...
Borna Coric, 10th Smrikva Bowl 2005 player, made the most of his wild card into the Swiss Indoors Basel by taking out 6th-seeded Ernests Gulbis for his first top 20 win, 7:6, 6:3… and only few days after in the quarterfinals 2nd-seeded Rafael Nadal for his first top 3 win, 6:2, 7:6
Borna won his maiden Grand Slam match this summer when he defeated Lukas Rosol at the US Open, was also a quarterfinalist in UMAG this July… I enjoyed his matches this summer… and at the tournament in UMAG he became the second youngest quarterfinalist in Umag history, and the youngest since Rafael Nadal in 2003.
At the beginning of the week Borna took advantage of an uninspired performance made by Ernest Gulbis, earning 14 break points against and converting three en route to his fifth tour level victory of the season.
… after Gulbis… Borna faced Andrey Golubev (#66 ATP) in the second round in Basel… and 6:4, 6:4 victory allowed him to play and win his childhood idol Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals…
Borna said after winning Glubis that this was his biggest win on the Tour but not the best match ever… the best match ever was the one he played against Janowicz in Davis Cup…
Still looking to learn how Borna lived match with Rafa…
Last week I made TOP 100 ATP/WTA list and included Borna’s profile on the list as the first future Candidate to reach TOP 100 ATP and after this quarterfinals victory over Nadal he may enter the Club…

2nd round: Borna Coric – Andrey Golubev (Kaz) 6:4, 6:4
Quarterfinals: Borna Coric – Rafael Nadal (Esp) 6:2, 7:6
