Four Smrikva Bowl girls are part of today's Iva Majoli's Croatian FED CUP team: Tereza MRDEZA, Petra MARTIC, Donna VEKIC and Ana KONJUH

Tereza MRDEZA, 5th Smrikva Bowl 2000 winner, Petra MARTIC, 6th Smrikva Bowl 2001 winner, Donna VEKIC, 8th, 9th and 10th Smrikva Bowl player, and Ana KONJUH, 12th Smrikva Bowl 2007 runner up are all part of the current Croatian FED CUP team.

The leadership of the team is supervised by former Roland Garros Champion Iva MAJOLI.

The “seeds of the Legends” are still seeds.. but at the moment both Donna VEKIC and Ana KONJUH are holding the leading position in their generations at the World level.

Ana KONJUH holds #1 ITF ranking being born in December 1997 and already holding at homes trophies of the ORANGE BOWL under 18, EDDIE HERR under 18, Junior AUSTRALIAN OPEN Championship…

...while Donna VEKIC is already TOP 100 WTA being born only at the end of June 1996, and is by far the best of her generation…

Nobody can foresee the future but just few days ago the father of Goran Ivanisevic visited SMRIKVE LOUNGE… and I recall his son’s recent interview where he said that in the following years this team could reach the top of the World… :)

A good rhythm and feeling development is a must to fully develop a tennis talent and in the video above you have a rare occasion to see developing tennis stars Ana and Donna dancing with Iva Majoli :)...

Smrikva seeds are growing…

Daria Solovyeva - Dasha at "La Bottega" di Smrikve :)

La Bottega di Smrikve is a natural development of the story started in 1996 when the Smrikva Bowl tennis talents story began…

During the Renaissance period La Bottega (the art and craft workshop) was the nursery site for the formation of the artists… and was probably the source of the Renaissance itself…

Inside La Bottega we can imagine pupils, still children, that began to take their first steps into the world of art… growing their talent side by side with the greatest artists that later on made history…

... and the Renaissance workshop was not limited to being a fine school of design (the same as our tennis school is not a simple fine school of tennis) but has served as a cultural center in which the philosophy and scientific knowledge merged with the artistic technique…

Dasha from Moscow opened this year “La Bottega” season of the World tennis talents visits some weeks ago…

TALENTED PLAYERS THAT WE ACCEPT DURING THE YEAR FOR SHORTER PERIODS OF TIME AS GUESTS OF OUR SCHOOL ARE LINKED TO THE SMRIKVA BOWL NETWORK…

Since 1996 over 1250 tennis talents spread in 57 countries and all the continents played Smrikva Bowl… and the preference of the accepted players always go to the talents we had opportunity to meet during Smrikva Bowl or players recommended by the Smrikva Bowl Ambassadors…

Traditionally they have good understanding of the Smrikve philosophy…

... day after day we are closer to the spring when the sun will be our daily companion… a warm friend :)...

... and YODA always help in teaching with some wise comments… ;)

... and quite a lot of his thoughts are summarized in Jim Loehr Mental Training and Alistar Higham explanation of the hidden force in tennis… the Momentum...

Article from AUSTRALIAN OPEN website: KONJUH wins girls' title and No.1 junior ranking

Ana KONJUH played 12th Smrikva Bowl in 2007 and reached the finals at the time. In the following video you can hear few comments she made at the time :)

On the following picture you can see Ariana Rabac, Ana Konjuh and Virginia Pena having the same t-shirt after their victory of the “Little Mo”/Smrikva Bowl matches.

I am pleased to share the following article written by Leigh Rogers and published on the Australian Open website which explain today’s match and Ana’s potential. Enjoy the article:

Konjuh wins girls’ title and No.1 junior ranking

Saturday, 26 January, 2013
By Leigh Rogers

Croatian Ana Konjuh signalled she is a future star of women’s tennis as she claimed the 2013 Australian Open girls’ singles championship on Saturday.

The No.3 seed defeated No.2 seed Katerina Siniakova of Czech Republic 6-3 6-4 in an impressive display of tennis that lasted 64 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

It is Konjuh’s first junior singles grand slam title and adds to the 2013 Australian Open girls’ doubles crown she won with Canadian Carol Zhao on Friday. The victory will also see her rise to world No.1 when the new ITF junior rankings are released on Monday.

“The feeling is incredible,” Konjuh said.

Konjuh, 15, entered the match on a 17-match winning streak that stretches back to November 2012 and includes two titles. She also had a two-nil head-to-head record against her opponent, beating her twice last season.

Konjuh looked confident from the opening point, playing aggressive tennis to get on the board early. She broke Siniakova’s opening serve to love and quickly raced to a 3-0 lead.

Her powerful game was too much for her 16-year opponent to handle. She was dictating play and showing she had the complete game, using drop shots and lobs to mix up play and keep her opponent guessing.

Siniakova was flustered. Her game is built around her powerful shot-making, but she was not getting the opportunity to take control of the points.

Konjuh served out the opening set with an ace, taking it 6-3 in 26 minutes.

The Croatian had three break points on the Siniakova serve in the third game of the second set, but could not convert as Siniakova reeled off five straight points to take a 2-1 lead.

It was a turning point in the match. With Siniakova’s confidence growing, she then broke Konjuh in the next game and raced to a 4-1 lead.

Konjuh did not panic. She continued to play her game and was able to break back and level the set at 4-all.

The momentum had swung again and this time it was all in Konjuh’s favour.

She broke Siniakova’s serve to give her the opportunity to serve for the championships. There were no signs of nerves from the No.3 seed, as she held serve to love to win her fifth straight game and take the set 6-4.

Konjuh admitted she was a bit nervous but relished the chance to play on centre court in her first visit to Melbourne Park.

“That experience, the crowd, you know, it’s all a big thing,” she said. “I was just trying to focus on my game, you know, not to look at the crowd and other things. I just hope in the future I’m going to come back.”

Konjuh becomes the third player in the past three years to win both the Australian Open girls’ singles and doubles title, following Belgian An-Sophie Mestach in 2011 and American Taylor Townsend in 2012.

Belarusian world No.1 Victoria Azarenka, who is aiming to win a second consecutive Australian Open women’s singles championship tonight, also collected both junior titles in 2005.

Within the New Year Gianluigi Quinzi become #1 on ITF ranking list being still only 16 years old… There are 5 Smrikva Bowl players on the current TOP 5 ITF ranking list... and 22 players in the TOP 100 ITF…

Boys ITF – TOP 5:

3. Nikola Milojevic -10th Smrikva Bowl 2005 Consolation winner
4. Laslo Djere -10th Smrikva Bowl 2005 runner up

Girls ITF – TOP 5:
3. Ana Konjuh – 12th Smrikva Bowl 2007 runner up
4. Belinda Bencic – 11th Smrikva Bowl 2006 player

A week ago an important GRADE A ITF Tournament was played in Mexico where two Smrikva Bowl kids get the titles: Nikola Milojevic and Belinda Bencic… I am pleased to share the article published on ITF website:

BENCIC AND MILOJEVIC TAKES TITLES IN MEXICO

The Abierto Juvenil Mexicano opened another chapter in its history on Saturday when it crowned two new singles champions. It also marked a moment of personal history for both girls’ winner Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and boys’ conqueror Nikola Milojevic of Serbia, who each picked up debut Grade A titles.

Milojevic, who arrived in Mexico City on 17 December to gain extra practice ahead of the event, put all that preparation to good use through the week. He capped off a string of dominant performances on the clay-courts of the Club Deportivo Chapultepec in Mexico City with a 60 63 win over Naoki Nakagawa of Japan.

“I feel fortunate to participate in this wonderful tournament, because since last year my dream has been to win here,” said 17-year-old Milojevic, who is from Belgrade. “For me it is a pleasure to play in Mexico, I liked the warmth of the people, I liked the tennis, the organisation. I take great memories of Mexico, thanks to this tournament.”

Milojevic’s win should give his confidence a big boost ahead of the first junior Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, which begins on 19 January on the Plexicushion courts of Melbourne Park. Milojevic will join other leading lights of the ITF Junior Circuit in the draw there, including Gianluigi Quinzi of Italy, home favourite Nick Kyrgios, Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal and his countryman Laslo Djere.

Fifteen-year-old Bencic was the outstanding player of the week in the girls event in Mexico and her run to the trophy included two 60 60 ‘double bagel’ wins, but she did not have things all her own way during a battling 64 62 final victory over Ching-Wen Hsu of Chinese Taipei.

“I’m happy to be crowned in the Mexican Junior Open at 15 years old, because coming here my goal was always to win the title,” said Bencic, who comes from Flawil, Switzerland. “It wasn’t easy in the final, playing against Hsu, it was very hard, but at the end I came out with the win. Every opponent is tough, especially if I have not fully accustomed to the altitude, I had to watch my game and concentrate hard.”

Bencic received plenty of applause in the main stadium court when she lifted the trophy and was also given a traditional Mexican ‘charro’ hat as a memento. She spoke warmly of her time in the Mexican capital. “I really enjoyed the city, the weather is very warm, the organisation was absolutely amazing and the club is very nice, the courts are excellent,” said Bencic. “All week I played really well.”

Her first Grade A singles title at Junior level came after a successful year for Bencic, who also won back-to-back women’s $10,000 ITF Pro Circuit titles in Egypt in September and made her Fed Cup by BNP Paribas debut for Switzerland in 2012. She told reporters in Mexico City that she planned to return to her training base in Florida ahead of heading Down Under to join some of the biggest names in ITF Junior Tennis at the Australian Open.

“I’m planning to train and prepare hard for my next few tournaments,” said Bencic. “I’m going step by step in my tennis career and trying not to put too much pressure on myself. “I need to keep winning and be consistent. I need to stay concentrated on my goals.”

INSPIRING... SMRIKVA...B...O...W...L... ;)

Just few days ago a friend of mine called me for the New Year… and also to tell me that he was really impressed with Andre Agassi’s book OPEN… he wished to share some thoughts with me on the phone… and also decided to write a short letter to Andre about Smrikva… :)...

I enjoyed that book too… and I am pleased to share with Smrikve community the article I wrote at the time… and I do hope the kids who lived their Smrikva may like it…

This year SMRIKVA BOWL will be 18th... and in Europe when you turn 18th is the time when you get voting rights… thus you start having also bigger responsabilities in the society…

A week ago I read an article of IVA MAJOLI, Croatian Fed Cup team leader, and the similar opinnion was shared by GORAN IVANISEVIC, where she announced the future Croatian team envisaging an important future for them…

The announced team members are:

Petra MARTIC – 6th Smrikva Bowl 2001 winner (born in 1991)
Donna VEKIC – 10th Smrikva Bowl 2005 player (born in 1996)
Tereza MRDEZA – 5th Smrikva Bowl 2000 winner (born in 1990)
Ana KONJUH – 12th Smrikva Bowl 2007 finalist (born in 1997)

... :)... enjoy the article…

Smrikve, January 2010

INSPIRING… SMRIKVA…

... an inspiring tennis festival… When I think of Smrikva Bowl I try to imagine it as a theatre where every year we work hard to set a stage where the world’s talents can gather… Every year we gather all these different actors, great talents, very special kids, arriving from different cultures, having different dreams,...

We set the stage and later on they are in charge with their will, dreams and hard work… they are the ones who write the most different stories…

Smrikva Bowl is still very young tournament but I would like to think that some of these kids will write nice and inspiring stories in most different professional fields.

I also know that according to the statistics only few of the kids participating Smrikva Bowl will make it to become top professional tennis players, but I like to think that they will make it in other professional fields they choose in their lives.

I was recently reading Andre Agassi’s book and throught the whole book he was repeating to friends and people meeting during his life that he doesn’t like tennis thus it seems to me that he never had the option to choose, but in end he ended up being the Champion and according to Luke Jensen a person with big heart and very good friend.

I will never know how many kids playing Smrikva Bowl are playing it because their parents would like them to become professional tennis players and how mutch of them play it because they enjoy the game.

What I do know is that any kind of sport can help kids in their growth and I also know that people that do excel in any field require total dedication and a lot of sacrifice to reach the excellence.

When I think of Andre’s words of not loving what he was doing for most of the time of his life I start thinking of other 90% of people around the World that make for living doing jobs they do not like, but “La vita e’ bella” Roberto Benigni would say and tennis helped Andre to grow up.

There is one part in the book that I liked a lot… it is about inspiration, faith and what does it mean to be a good coach... to have the right word in the right moment… this part is related with Gil… and is about people that do beleive in other people and help them to write their life stories and to write their own one…

Here are Gil’s words reported by Andre in his book when he accepted to caoch him:

“I’m not one of those people who expresses or articulates feelings very well, but from now on, just know this: It’s on, man. It is on.

You know what I’m saying? We’are in a fight, and you can count on me until the last man is standing. Somewhere up there is a star with your name on it. I might not be able to help you find it, but I’ve got pretty strong shoulders, and you can stand on my shoulders while you’re looking for that star. You hear? For as long as you want. Stand on my shoulders and reach, man. Reach.”

In every life there are people that influence what we do and how we do it.

The Smrikva Bowl festival would like to inspire its players and Ambassadors to beleive in their dreams and work hard to reach them.

Sport and music are in general good educators and the vision of sport prefered in Smrikve is the one Nelson Mandela once said:

“Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire and the power to unite people in a way little else can – it is an instrument of peace.”

Best Wishes... Sve najljepše... Auguri :)...

Best wishes to all Smrikve friends and SMRIKVA kids with their families that do write the day after day the story of the Legends of tomorrow and the Champions of today! :)

Tennis is played in Smrikve for only three decades… but since 1996, one of the most prestigious under 10 tennis gatherings – Smrikva Bowl – has been attracting ” seeds of the Champions and Legends of tomorrow”...

There are a lot of people who call you by your name, but there are some who make it to the top and get titled “the Legend”… they inspire people by example… and many Smrikva kids inspire by example day after day…

Far away… in the Sunshine there might be hidden Smrikva Bowl kids’ and also our highest aspirations… many of us may never reach them, but we can all believe in dreams… and try to follow where they lead… enjoying the trip… and never forgetting that for someone we are the Sunshine simply the way we are…

Best wishes,

Auguri,

Mimi de “La Bottega” di Smrikve

Ana Konjuh, Laslo Djere win Orange Bowl 18s singles titles... Smrikva Bowl finalist in 2005 and 2007... an article published on USTA.com

Laslo Djere, 10th Smrikva Bowl 2005 runner up, and Ana Konjuh, 12th Smrikva Bowl 2007 runner up, won this year under 18 Dunlop ORANGE BOWL… I am pleased to share the article of Pat Mitsch written after the victory for the USTA.com…

Laslo Djere was runner up on this year Eddie Herr International under 18… while Ana Konjuh won the Eddi Herr Internatioal Junior Championship too and is the second girl in the history to win both titles in the same year…

With this week results Laslo Djere jumped to #7 ranking on ITF ranking list while Ana Konjuh jumped to #4 ITF ranking list position :)...

By Pat Mitsch, special to USTA.com

PLANTATION, Fla. – After opening so many eyes in America, Ana Konjuh will return to her home in Croatia and finally close hers.

The 14-year old Konjuh defeated the Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-2 Sunday to capture the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships Girls’ 18s singles title at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center.

*Konjuh*’s victory on the clay courts comes a week after she won the Girls’ 18s singles title at the Eddie Herr International Junior Championship. She joins American Lauren Davis (2010) as the only two girls to win both titles in the same year.

After a whirlwind two weeks in which Konjuh, the No. 7 seed, swatted and sliced her way to 12 straight singles victories, she said the first thing she’ll do upon returning to her home in the Croatian capital of Zagreb is, well, sleep.

“Sure, I have a lot of confidence, but I’m also tired. I have to relax a bit right now,” said Konjuh, the youngest Orange Bowl Girls 18s champion since 14-year old Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal in 2007. “I played a lot of matches. I got tired a bit. Now I’m just going to go home, spend time with my family, practice and prepare for (the) Australian Open.”

Siniakova, meanwhile, will end the year at No. 2 in the ITF World Junior rankings after falling to Konjuh in the Eddie Herr semifinals and Sunday’s Orange Bowl final, when Konjuh, who turns 15 on Dec. 27, made a change in match strategy.

“I wanted to play different, but she also played different. She played a little more slice, so I couldn’t make something with that,” said Siniakova, the No. 2 seed. “We know each other, so, it was a little bit different than the last match.”

Serbia’s Laslo Djere also produced a similar result against a familiar opponent in the Orange Bowl Boys’ 18s singles final, taking down No. 12 Elias Ymer of Sweden 6-4, 6-4. The two also met in the Eddie Herr semifinals, with Djere beating Ymer before falling in the Boys’ 18s title match.

“I finally managed to finish this match in the second set, unlike the week before,” the 17-year old Djere said. “It would be a bad feeling to lose two finals, so I gave my best to win this final, and it’s a great result. I’m very happy.”

Leading 5-4 in both the first and second set, the 10th-seeded Djere broke the 12th-seeded Ymer each time, closing out the match when Ymer sailed a forehand long on double match point.

“His down-the-line backhand was really good. He was stronger than me mentally,” Ymer, 16, said. “I don’t know. I couldn’t serve it out, 5-4, both sets. I think he played smarter than me.”
