Sv.Martin – Vettua S. Martino: “Lazzarini Battiala Palace”

Sv.Martin is a village located in the eastern part of Istria, not far away from Labin. This is one of the most beautiful countryside properties in Istria to me, mostly for the way how the property is structured. Good taste of the family Lazzarini Battiala can be proved by another palace they built in Labin.

  • not to be missed: Lazzarini Battiala countryside complex

SV. MARTIN – VIRTUAL TOUR AND HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

This village was of particular interest to me because of Lazzarini Battiala countryside complex. Lazzarini Battiala family was an important Noble Istrian family.

There is another attractive palace of this family in the centre of the old town of Labin.

There are not infinitive number of palaces that are worth to be visited in Istria so I decided to visit this village and to picture the complex.

There is a Church of St. Martin from 1907 that is worth to be visited. It has a nice stone made façade and was built on a site of an older church.

In the western part of the village there is another church, the Church of Our Lady of Health, built in 1632 in memory to plague year.

The courtyard of Lazzarini Battiala and the palaces are nice example of the old architecture and probably in the near future will be even more beautiful because the restructuring process of various buildings are in progress.

It is interesting that the main palace is not so big. There are much bigger the secondary palaces around the courtyard.

Opposite to the main gate you will see the Lazzarini Battiala palace and the shadow of centuries old trees will lead you in front of the door of the palace. Nearby the door you will see an old well.

The left wing of the secondary buildings has a particular defence tower with two clocks. There is a clock we are used to see and use today and there is also a solar clock.

It is clear that this wing and the wing opposite to the main palace were used by people that worked on the property. The view from the complex towards south eastern part of Istria is really nice.
