Vodnjan – Dignano:”The stone made facade of the Church of Our Carnelian Lady is the most elegant Renaissance element of Vodnjan“

In the middle of the street, on the right side, you will see a vault. Once you pass the vault you will be in front of the Church of St. Martin that dates back into 15th century.

Between 1550 and 1580 in Istria was intruduced the Inquisition and also Vodnjan had some Inquisition processes. The tribunal sentenced to death few people in Istria mainly those that accepted the Protestant religion.

On the doorway of the Church of St. Martin is written “Ecclesia S. Inquisit. Istrae” as a memory of that times.

If you continue your visit you will note, always on the right side of the street, the Church of Our Carnelian Lady that dates back into 1630. The church was completed in 1667.

It is one of the most elegant Renaissance stone made facades in Vodnjan with interesting stairs, beautiful doorway and a big stone made eye also named the rose that allow the sun to enter the church. Also the bell tower is small, nice and part of the façade.

During the period when the Parish Church was under construction this church was used as the Parish Church. The church has also an interesting floor made of back and white marble stone blocks. Like most other Istrian churches also this one has some valuable painting art works.

Once you pass the church there is a possibility to continue to follow the street towards the main square that has several attractive palaces or you can take the street that turns left and continue to walk until the Church of St. Catherine that dates back in the 16th century.

I advise you to walk through both streets because there are several interesting houses in each one.

From the Church of St. Catherine there is another street, parallel with Trgovacka, that allow you to arrive to the main square and also in this street there are few interesting medieval court yards and vaults.

In the main square you can enjoy the beauty of several buildings. In the 13th century the old Attinianum was a castle organized around the square we see today.

Over the centuries many things have changed but at the time there were three gates to access the old castle.

In 1808 the old castle was demolished and its stones were used to pave the streets around the main square.

I am sure that the building that will impress you most is the Bradamante palace that also hosted a fondaco and the public loggia.

This palace is located in the southern part of the square and dates back into 14th century. It was restructured several times and in 1814 was added the Baroque tower with the clock while the other restructurings date back into 1845.

The last time was restructured only few years ago by the Italian Community. This last restructuring restored the old beauty to this antique palace.

Another building that will take your attention on the square was built in 1910 and is the Municipal building. The building has a lovely Venetian balcony on the second floor with six gothic windows placed on the angle of the palace.

The palace also has some nice paintings on the façade near to the roof of the building.
