Labin – Albona:“Home to one of the best preserved Baroque palaces in Istria from 1717 - Lazzarini Battiala”

There are also few stairs that allow you to enter a court yard. Nearby the stairs there are the rest of the old bell tower of the church from the 10th century that became the angle of the house. This church was used to elect the public leaders and other officials of the community.

Not far away from the Church of St. Justus, continuing to walk downside the hill, you will arrive in a small square that have five most beautiful and representative Labin’s buildings. Every building is well maintained and most of them are from the Baroque period.

The first building you will note arriving in the square is the Bishop's house from the 17th century with interesting stairs and doorway. The façade also has a particular columns that that give you an idea of a Baroque balcony but in reality if you look more carefully you will note that it is not a balcony but simply a painted façade.

If you turn back and look towards the north eastern part of the square you will note two other attractive buildings. The first one is Battiala Lazzarini palace from 1717 that has a massive Baroque elements on its façade.

This palace is one of the best preserved Baroque palaces in Istria. It has an impressive doorway and also the second and third floor have three vaults windows each with Baroque columns. This is the only example with two “piano Nobile” floors.

It is also very interesting the balcony on the left angle of the façade of the second floor. This building today houses Labin National museum.

The most interesting part of the museum is the mining exposition placed in the underground of the palace. It is a unique example of mining museum in this part of Europe.

Family Battiala is a noble family since 1684 and their origin is from Porec. They had Counts title recognized by the Sacral Roman Empire and later on they were recognized Barons by the Italian government. In 18th century Giovanni Antonio Battiala was named “Istrian Ciceron” for its rhetoric capacities.

The family Battiala Lazzarini, like other Noble Istrian families, have built a countryside complex outside the town and you can visit it in Sv. Martin.

Nearby the massive Battiala Lazzarini Palace there is another architectural beauty. The Church of St. Stephen dates back into the 17th century and is probably one of the most beautiful facades with Baroque architecture in Istria.

Few meters below the Church of St. Stephen there is the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1336. On the same place there was an older church from the 11th century.

The church has a very nice stone made façade with a big Lion of St. Mark placed above the doorway and few stone made coat of arms. The Lion of St. Mark, from the 16th century, was placed on a façade in 1842 and in origin it was placed above the St. Flora gates.

Above the Lion of St. Mark there is a beautiful rose and the whole façade reflects harmony in each element. The two bells, the windows; everything is placed reflecting the harmony and nice style.

If you look carefully near the main doorway you will note the old Gothic arch of the primitive chapel. Above the Gothic arch there is a beautiful Baroque sculpture of Antonio Bollani. Antonio Bollani was a soldier who fought against Turks.
