Porec – Parenzo:”Zucchato family Palace and many other lovely historical buildings”
On the angle of this cross road, on your right side, there is a beautiful palace with Gothic windows, Venetian “bifora”, on the first and second floor. This is the former Zucchato family Palace that dates back into the 15th century and today the palace is used as an art gallery.
Opposite to Zucchato palace, on the other side of Cardo street, there is another attractive Gothic palace with, Venetian “monofora” on the first and second floor that forms the angle of the street Decumano – Cardo. Porec really offers some extraordinary architecture art works very similar to one you can find in Venice.
Now if you walk ten meters towards the centre of this large Matija Gubca square, you can stop near the old stone well and take a look towards houses that are placed on Cardo street.
The view you have are some interesting Baroque and Gothic facades, real art works. Many palaces that were in the area of today Matija Gubca square have been destroyed during the second World War bombing and have not been rebuilt after that.
If you continue the visit following Decumano street, on your left side you will note an independent building made as combination of stone and wood. This pretty art work is a Romanesque house that dates back into 13th century. On the side of the building, where the main stone stairs are placed, there is a stone well from the 15th century. The coat of arms on it belongs to Nicolo Leone. So also this well belonged to Podesta’ Nicolo Leone.
This is also the place where Decumano street ends into Marafor square. Marafor square was during the Roman period the main Forum square of Porec. This is the oldest part of the town with ruins of two Roman temples: Temple of Mars and Temple of Neptun.
In Marafor square you will see in front of you a Baroque façade of former Bassi family house. To visit the ruins of the Roman temples you have to walk nearby the right side of Bassi family house.
The first ruins you will see in the right angle are the ruins of Neptun temple that dates back into 1st century. There are three stone columns left of the Temple. On the left side you will see a small wall and inside this wall a lapidarium is placed. The ruins of the Temple of Mars are also from the 1st century and this was probably the biggest Roman temple of Istria.
Few meters from there you will be on the limit of the Porec peninsula. If you turn back and take a look towards the ruins of the Temple of Mars on your left side you will see former Villa Polesini-Bullo from the 17th century.
Polesini family is an old Noble Istrian family that over the centuries have built several beautiful palaces in Istria.
The most important are: Polesini palace in Motovun, countryside complex Villa Polesini in Sv. Ivan and the castle on the Sv. Nikola island in front of Porec. On your right side, if you stand in front of the Temple of Mars, on the coast line, you will note the Hotel Riviera building.
There is an interesting story related with this hotel. Hotel Riviera was built in 1896 by an Austrian company which also built the Hotel Riviera in Pula.
The owner of the company was Mr. Klein who started the hotel business in very famous tourism destination of the time, Opatija.
