Rovinj – Rovigno: “During the second Sunday in August the Grisia street becomes the art exhibition stage”
We can continue the visit by taking the right side of St. Euphemia Church. Following this direction you will note, on your left side, placed on the corner, a small Church of St. Joseph from 1673.
This is also the start or the end of a famous Rovinj street named Grisia.
If you are in Smrikve or in Istria on the second Sunday in August you will have the opportunity to assist the summer art exhibition named Grisia.
Grisia street, on the second Sunday in August, since 1967, is traditionally the place where artists meet and exhibit their works.
Rovinj's Grisia becomes a large international artistic studio for a day. Artists display their artworks on the walls, doors of the houses so every part of the street reflects the art that day.
Grisia is traditionally a very nice event and become really charming place during evening hours when all the people can chat with artists and add energy to this artistic gallery under the stars.
On Grisia street there are also some nice palaces and downside the hill on the right side you will note a nice small square, named Veli Trg, with two interesting façades on the western side of the square.
This two harmonious corner Renaissance houses, separated by a street, stand out with their finely treated stone bloc structure and with lovely modulation of the windows openings. The houses were probably built around 1580.
On the second floor they both have an impressive Renaissance stone balcony with balusters.
After twenty meters from the square you will be near to the Municipal Palace with an interesting stone doorway. This square is named Mateotti square. From Mateotti square and its vicinity several streets Trevisol, Montalbano, Garzotta, Grisia, Zdenac can bring you back to the top of the hill.
Every direction you take will surprise you but lets continue our virtual tour.
The façade of the current Municipal palace and former Venetian Podesta’ palace have a stone inscription, several coat of arms and a Lion of St. Mark placed between the windows on the first floor.
This building was built for the first time in 1332. Later on was restructured several times and the last larger restructuring took place at the end of the 17th century.
From the Municipal palace you will note also the back of the Baroque Balbi gate that was built in 1680. Daniele Balbi was Podesta’ of Rovinj at the time and he built this gate.
The upper part of the gate has two coat of arms and a big Lion of St. Mark from the end of the 15th century with the open book placed above it.
Opposite to the Balbi gate you will note a building named the clock tower with another big Lion of St. Mark on the western wall façade.
This building dates back into the 12th century and this was the angle tower of the old town walls.
The canal that was separating the Rovinj island from the land was located in the back of this building and was going from the back of the clock tower until the place where theatre Gandusio is located.
Today you can only imagine how this area looked like back in time.
