Buzet – Pinguente: “Old Piquentoi, Pinquent, Pinguentum, Castrum Pinguen, Puviendo - the town of coats of arms”
In 1789 this large well that you can see in the middle of the square was renovated and its current shape was obtained.
This monumental construction made in the Baroque style, built by Alvise Foscari IV during Marc Antonio Trevisan Captaincy, wholly determines the architecture of the square. In the wall that surrounds the well there is a sculpture of the Lion of St. Mark built in it.
From the square with the well the visit continues towards the second church of the old town built in 1611 and dedicated to St. George. On the right side of the church you should note a bell in an old “bifora” and a beautiful view of the surroundings of Buzet.
You can walk back towards the main square and take the street where “Stara Ostarija” Restaurant is located. This is a good restaurant with a beautiful covered terrace and a view towards the western part of Istria.
At the bottom of the street a lapidarium is placed.
Buzet could be also defined as the town of coats of arms. You will find many coats of arms of different families that were known families in the town long time ago like: Marcello, Erizzo, Donato, Trevisan, Bigatto, Zorzi, Bon, Pizzamano, Bondumier, Salomon, Bembo, Verzi, Crevato, etc.
It is also worth mentioning that in 1930, from the water spring of Buzet named Sv. Ivan (S. Giovanni or St. John), the construction of the Istrian aqueduct started. This project was completed in 1938 and the bridge that was crossing the valley at the time was considered the longest in all Europe.
